5 Legends to Have Scored More Than Cristiano Ronaldo's 700 Career Goals

Cristiano Ronaldo reached a career landmark on Monday by scoring his 700th career goal in Portugal's Euro 2020 qualifier at Ukraine.

His 700 goals so far have come from 973 matches, scoring at least once in 458 of those and in 12 different competitions, meaning he's scored a goal every 112 minutes and in 47 percent of the games he's played.

He scored five in 31 games with Sporting CP, 118 in 292 games with Manchester United, 451 in 438 games in Spain for Real Madrid and 32 in 51 games at Juventus. Ronaldo's goal means he joins an elite group of players to have hit at least 700 goals in their career.

Here are the five legends who have scored more goals than Ronaldo.

5. Gerd Muller (735 goals)

Known for his clinical finishing, Gerd Muller remains to be widely known as one of the best strikers and goal scorers of all time. Muller represented Bayern for 15 years, and to date remains the highest scorer for the Bavarian Giants.

The Bayern legend, who scored the winner for West Germany in the 1974 World Cup final, averaged more than a goal a game at an international level (68 in just 62 matches).

4. Ferenc Puskás (746 goals)

Widely regarded as one of the best footballers of all time, the ‘Galloping Major’ was a key man in two of the greatest sides in football history: Hungary's 'Magnificent Magyars' and Real Madrid's 1960 European Cup winners.

He is one of the top sports personalities in Hungary, and has one of the greatest footballing awards ‘The FIFA Puskás Award’ named after him, which is given each year to the player who has scored what is referred to as “the most beautiful goal” of the year.

3. Pelé (767 goals)

The Brazilian Pelé is still one of the most influential footballers out there. He coined the iconic phrase “the beautiful game” and holds the Guinness World Record for goals in games; standing at 1281 goals across 1363 games.

A three-time World Cup winner with Brazil, 'The King' netted 767 times in just 831 appearances, meaning he boasts a staggering strike rate of 0.92 goals per game. He scored Brazil’s 100th World Cup goal with a header in the 1970 World Cup final against Italy.

2. Romário (772 goals)

With 772 career goals in 994 matches, Romário was one of the most clinical strikers the world of football has ever seen.

Now a politician in his home country of Brazil, Romário was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 1994 and was, along with Pelé, elected by the public to the FIFA World Cup Dream Team in 2002.

Brazil legend Ronaldo has said Romário is the footballer he looks up to, and former Barcelona coach Johann Cruyff has described Romário as "a genius" in the penalty area.

1. Josef Bican (805 goals)

Austrian legend Josef Biscan leads this legendary list with 805 goals from 530 matches.

Known to be two-footed, Bican played for multiple Austrian clubs before playing for a number of Czech clubs, including Dynamo Prague, and 3 different nations including Austria, the Czech Republic, and Bohemia and Moravia.
