Shi'ites: Court Awards N15 Millon Against Police Over Slain IMN Members

Shi'ites: Court Awards N15 Millon Against Police Over Slain IMN Members The Abuja Division of the Federal High court has awarded the cost of 15million Naira against the Police for the killing of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria IMN during protests which turned violent last July in Abuja. The court, on Monday, also ordered the immediate release of the corpses of three members of the Shi'ite group deposited in the morgue of the National Hospital. Galaxy's Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that Justice Taiwo, in delivering the judgment, held that the action of the police was both illegal and unlawful as it contravenes the provisions of Section 31(1) of the Constitution as it borders on the fundamental rights of the victims. The case went totally in favour of the applicants as the police boss did not counter the submissions of the IMN with regards to the accounts of what happened on 22 July, as none of his lawyers was present for the whole duration of the hearing.
