Alleged Kidnapping: Six Assault Rifles Tendered in Wadume's Trial
Six rifles have been tendered in court as evidence in the trial of alleged kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Bala, also known as 'Wadume'.
At the resumed hearing on Monday, the prosecution presented witness-six as contained in the charge sheet, one Inspector Habila Samuel, a police officer attached with the Intelligence Response Team IRT, Force Headquarters Abuja.
Galaxy's Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that the witness appeared in court to give his findings from the investigation of what transpired in Ibi, Taraba State on 6 August, 2019 when soldiers shot at the police vehicle conveying the arrested Wadume, killing three operatives and two civilians.
During cross-examination by the prosecution counsel, the witness told the Court that the first defendant was tracked by the police based on information from his elder brother, one Auwal Bala, based in Lagos and Rayannu, his Kano-based uncle at whose home he sought refuge following a massive manhunt.
It was at the Kano home of his uncle that Hamisu Bala received treatment for gunshot wounds from a family physician, before his eventual arrest.
In their submissions, however, counsels to the second and sixth defendants objected to the admissibility of their clients' statements on grounds of these being obtained under duress.
The second defendant's counsel said his client, the Station Officer at Ibi, Inspector Daje, made his statement with an inducement to implicate a certain army Captain Balarabe while that of the sixth defendant alleged his client, Zubairu Abdullahi, was tortured to get his statement.
