JOB RECRUITMENT: NASS SUSPENDS IMPLEMENTATION OF SPECIAL PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMME
The National Assembly has suspended the implementation of the Special Public Works Programme for the employment of 774,000 citizens until the Minister of Labour and Employment briefs it with details of how the programme will be implemented.
This position of the National Assembly is coming amidst controversy on the implementation of the programme which the government seeks to engage largely unskilled labour for three months.
Therefore, the incident involving the Minister of State for Labour and the Joint Committee on Labour and Employment has therefore prompted the joint statement signed by the spokespersons of both Chambers of the National Assembly-Senator Ajibola Bashiru and Hon. Benjamin Kalu.
On whether the Senate has the right to suspend the implementation of the programme, the Senate Spokesman replied that it has the power to do so, noting, however, that the Executive has the right to head to court in the event that it thinks otherwise.
Meanwhile, the valedictory session intended for the late Lagos East Senator, Bayo Osinowo did not go ahead as planned this Wednesday owing to logistical challenges occasioned by the lockdown in Lagos, a factor that made it impossible for the family members of the deceased to be present at the event.
