LAND DISPUTE: BENUE GOVT SUE PEACE BETWEEN AIRFORCE AND COMMUNITIES
Governor Samuel ORTOM of Benue has tasked the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force to shift ground towards finding a peaceful solution to end the crises of land dispute between its neighboring communities in Makurdi.
Governor Ortom, made this known when he held a peace meeting between the management of the Tactical Air Command (TAC) Nigerian Air Force Makurdi and the leaders of Ugondo and Mbaingyor communities over a protracted land dispute at the Peoples House in Makurdi.
The Governor who reiterated its administration committment to the peace process, says part of the resolution reached is the call for creation of a joint committee between concerned parties and NAF to address issues affecting them and as well appeal for the compensation for the loss of economic tree, crops that may have been destroyed in the course of the four thousand hectares of land acquisition.
The governor, who says NAF are refusing to release 900 hectares of land been demanded by the aggrieved communities which has been in contention out of the 4000 hectares of land acquired, adduced technical and security matters as reasons why NAF are refusing, hoping that at least 350 hectares would be released on further consultation with the chief of air staff when he meet with him.
The governor who noted that the Benue people and government have enjoyed the presence of the NAF, following its contribution in securing the land against external aggressors, and other forms of crime such as armed militia, kidnapping, and banditry, says he will do everything possible to sustain the relationship and starve off possible friction.
