Nigeria needs urgent rescue - Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared Nigeria is in dire need of urgent rescue.

Nigeria, he said, has been badly damaged and broken.

He decried the unbearable and alarming conditions Nigerians are living with, lamenting hunger was ravaging as farmers have deserted their farms for fear of being killed.

These were contained in a statement in Abuja on Sunday by Hon. Oladimeji Fabiyi, who stood in for the Waziri Adamawa at the weekend in Gombe State during the inauguration of the leadership of the North-east zone of the Nigeria Youth Congress for Atiku.

“The hunger in the Northern Nigeria and indeed the entire country is getting to an unbearable and alarming rate as our farmers, fathers and mothers can no longer go to farm.

“Agriculture is one of the comparative advantages the Northern Nigeria has over other regions in the country but as at today it is almost non-existent, unfortunately occasioned by abysmal insecurity in the region.

“You hardly can drive ten kilometers in any part of the North without been kidnapped or attacked by armed bandits.

“This is not acceptable, this is not the time to massage the ego of the nation leadership, this is the time to cry out for help.”

Appreciating the leadership and members of the group who came from the six states of the North-east for the inauguration and support, Atiku urged Northern youths to protect their future.

“Northern youth have great potentials, you have huge role to play in what becomes of your region and Nigeria moving forward, you must protect your future and you can achieve this only by supporting one of your own, who has shown commitment to your welfare, progress and development. Atiku Abubakar, the golden son of the North East and a Pan Nigeria per excellence surely stand in the gap.”

National Chairman of the group, Yahuza Shehu, highlighted the its numerous achievements since formation, stressing that Atiku remains the best unifier for a terribly divided country like Nigeria.

“The North-east has no reason not to support Atiku should he decided to run come 2023.”

He called on all stakeholders, not only in the North-east but across the Northern Nigeria to support Atiku when the time comes.

PRESIDENT BUHARI WARNS AGAINST ETHNIC, RELIGIOUS PREJUDICES

PRESIDENT BUHARI WARNS AGAINST ETHNIC, RELIGIOUS PREJUDICES

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja warned that stoking ethnic and religious prejudices will not augur well for the development of the country, adding that his administration will continue to create the enabling environment for religious freedom as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

Speaking when the leadership of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) led by its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, paid him a courtesy call, President Buhari said:

“The Federal Government will continue to promote religious freedom as it is a constitutional responsibility. I must thank the Muslim ummah for promoting inter-religious dialogue in the country. It is self-evident that if the country must work, we must continue to work together in spite of our ethnic, religious and political differences because Nigeria is our collective project.

“Accordingly, the Federal Government under my leadership does not and will not allow religious prejudice or partisanship to influence any of its decisions and policies. It is my solemn decision to be fair and just to all segments of society.”

The President assured the delegation that government was doing all within its powers to bring the current state of insecurity to the barest minimum, calling on the local community to assist the security forces as they perform their roles:

“The Federal Government has worked tirelessly to combat insecurity and other challenges that are confronting the country. Security is a protracted problem but we are not relenting in our efforts. Not only are we equipping the military, we are also boosting their morale to perform their constitutional duties without undue interference.  We are also encouraging locales to enhance their intelligence gathering and timely remitting to the security Agencies.

“I acknowledge that security is the first responsibility of Government but Government cannot do it alone. It requires stakeholders, such as yourselves. Therefore, I urge you to lend your support to the security agencies by providing information that may stem the tide of crimes and insecurity in the society.”

He also spoke on efforts of his administration towards making life better for the average Nigerian:

“We are diversifying the economy and putting appropriate mechanisms in place to reduce poverty and more fiercely combat corruption, regardless of the status of those involved.

“Programmes such as N-Power, Conditional Cash Transfer, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme and Home-Grown School Feeding are just some of the interventions made to empower Nigerians and cater for their needs.

“The National Social Investment Programme alone has directly benefited four million Nigerians through job training and financial assistance.”

President Buhari called on the leaders to continue “speaking to our people and to help amplify this message through your very tried and tested networks” and to give full backing to the Alternate School Programme which he launched on Tuesday.

He said the it was “designed to not only address our high out of school rates, but it will boost our levels of Girl Child education while also equipping our youth with the right tools in making decisions at every turn of their lives when confronted by peddlers of evil and hateful messages… and also address the public health crises that the world is currently facing.”

The President used the opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to support  government efforts on COVID-19:

“As Government continues to work towards managing this crisis, it is also critical that you lend your voices in support of those basic but fundamental protocols that can significantly curtail the spread of this disease – Washing of our hands, Using facemasks and ensuring social distancing as much as possible have been proven to be our first line of defense in the fight against this virus.

“Furthermore and much more important, when the vaccines which we are working hard to procure for the nation arrive, please, please join in the drive to educate people that these vaccines are meant to save lives and protect everyone."

Earlier in his address, Sultan Abubakar commended the President for the successes achieved so far in the Northeast, calling on the Government to deal decisively with the banditry that is raving the Northwestern States of Zamfara, Katsina,  Sokoto and some parts of the North Central.

While expressing confidence that security forces, with better synergy among them, will overcome present challenges, he solicited for the cooperation of all the governors with the federal government irrespective of their political leanings, calling on Nigerians to support the new leadership of the armed forces.

The NSCIA leader also appealed to Nigerians, particularly religious leaders to refrain from making inflammatory comments that tend towards sowing discord in the polity and exacerbating the current level of insecurity in the land. He asked that religious leaders making subversive comments should be called to order.

The Sultan equally identified with the ‘Hate Speech Campaign’ of the Minister of Information and Culture. He said ‘Hate Speech’ is aggravating insecurity in the country and that “we have to act.”

Hoodlums attack Mapo police station free suspects

Suspected hoodlums on Thursday  invaded Mapo Police station in ibadan, attacked some Policemen who had earlier arrested two suspects.

The Commissioner of Police in a statement issued by the Command's public Relations Officer, Olugbenga Fadeyi said the hoodlums after attacking the policemen in Ibadan also freed the two suspects who had been arrested.

Our correspondent gathered that some hoodlums have been terrorising innocent citizens around Idi Arere, Popoyemoja, Born photo, Molete, Beere, Shogoye, Akobi and other areas within the Ibadan metropolis.

Recall that a 60-year old plantain seller was killed during a clash between two rival cult groups in one of the areas a few days ago.

The state Police Command on Thursday announced that police officers from Mapo Division succeeded in arresting two suspects in connection with the series of public disturbance in most of the areas.

Unfortunately, police said the suspects were set free by some hoodlums who attacked the policemen arresting the suspects earlier today.

Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko said one suspected hoodlum, identified as Packaging, led some thugs numbering about thirty (30) to attack and mob the Police team while forcefully taking the two miscreants away.

Onadeko used the medium to appeal to parents and guardians in the two areas to warn their wards to desist from acts capable of causing the breakdown of law and order

She added that massive deployment of Police personnel and that of Sister Security Agencies have been put in place to forestall further crises.

OONI WARNS SUNDAY IGBOHO

 OONI WARNS SUNDAY IGBOHO

"YOU HAVE DONE WELL, BUT DON'T TAKE THE LAW INTO YOUR HANDS"

“Let us be very objective. Igboho has been a mouthpiece for the downtrodden. He came up and everybody is listening now but my advice to him as a traditional ruler is that he needs to be very careful so that the politicians won’t hijack the whole motive from him.

He has done well and we’ve already praised him but he shouldn’t take the law into his hands. We have the governor there, he is the chief security officer of the state and Mr President has invited him (Makinde). Let the right people that are being authorised to do what is right do it.

“Igboho has done well and the world has heard him but everything should be done in moderation.”

We know that the bandits are everywhere. He shouldn’t take the law into his hands. We have laws in this country, and we should follow the law. Let the right people do the job.

He has done well, and we should leave it like that."

COVID-19 VACCINE: LAGOS TARGETS 60 PER CENT ROLLOUT, AS STATE ENGAGES PFIZER, OTHER VACCINE DEVELOPERS

COVID-19 VACCINE: LAGOS TARGETS 60 PER CENT ROLLOUT, AS STATE ENGAGES PFIZER, OTHER VACCINE DEVELOPERS

•Sanwo-Olu Reveals Lagos’ Plans Towards Ending Pandemic On Live TV Interview

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed the State Government’s plan on Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine rollout and the effort to bolster mass vaccination of residents in the State.

Lagos, Sanwo-Olu disclosed, is aiming to achieve 60 per cent vaccine rollout when the vaccination programme commences in the coming weeks, stressing that the figure would help check rate of transmission and build the resilience of the State against the ravaging virus.

The Governor spoke on “Sunday Politics”, a live television programme anchored by Channels TV’s Kayode Okikiolu. He also spoke on activities of his Government since inception and other germane issues around development of Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu said the State Government did not have the plan to make the COVID-19 vaccine available to all residents, as the State may not have the resources to do that; he said critical segments in the State population would be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity against the pandemic.

Aside the vaccine arrangement being made by the Federal Government for States, the Governor said Lagos, which is the epicentre of COVID-19 infection, had activated plans to augment the vaccine that would be delivered to the State.

He said: “As a sovereign, we want the Federal Government to take the lead in getting the vaccine. As a sub-national Government, we are taking our destiny into our own hand. We have started conversation with some of the vaccine manufacturers. I have made contact with Pfizer and Oxford-AstraZeneca. Developers of Moderna have written to us and we have written back to them.

“We are making our own sub-national contacts and part of the things to come out of this effort is that, once we see what the national government is doing in terms of protocols, then we can plan for our rollout. The contacts we made with vaccine developers are at the board level.

“We don’t have to vaccinate the whole of 22 million people in Lagos. The plan is around ensuring that there is herd immunity and that typically speaks to 50 to 60 percent of our population. That’s the target we need to really meet in vaccine rollout.”

On how Lagos would get resources to fund its vaccine programme, the Governor said the bulk of the finances would be realised from the private sector donations and international grants, adding that the State Government also had allocation for COVID-19 project in its 2021 budget.

Sanwo-Olu also spoke on how his administration had strengthened security and the plan to improve efficiency of security architecture in Lagos.

He said Lagos would continue to push for domestication of State Policing as a strategy to efficiently combat crime and strengthen security across the State. He stressed the need to employ technology in intelligence gathering, noting that the State Government was on the verge of rolling out 2,000 security cameras across communities through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).

He said: “One of the things we can do quickly is to improve the ratio of police to citizens number. That has not happened in a number of years. We believe that Lagos is under-policed, even as human population increases. If we address this imbalance through State Policing model, we can see a turnaround in security response. We are ready to have this conversation with the Police Force whenever they are ready.

“In our Smart City project, we are installing 2,000 high-definition security cameras to boost security architecture in Lagos. We are set and before the end of the year, a lot of cameras will be up on our streets. Technology is one of the things we can use to efficiently provide security. With the data from the cameras, we can get more deterrent from troublemakers.”

Romelu Lukaku Chooses Between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku has chosen between Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo and Messi are considered to be among the greatest footballers of all time, with both players having been at the top of the game for more than a decade now.

Ronaldo had finished second in the voting for The Best FIFA Men's Player award, only behind eventual winner Robert Lewandowski, while Lionel Messi was third, which goes on to show that these two player still remain among the best players in the world.

Lukaku, who is enjoying a great season with Inter Milan, was asked to pick between Ronaldo and Messi during an interview with ESPN UK. The 27-year-old, who has been Nerazzurri's key goal-getter this season, picked Ronaldo over Messi. Meanwhile, Lukaku's Belgium team-mate and Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne was also asked the same question, and the midfielder chose the Argentine over the Portuguese.

Ronaldo has been superb for Juventus this season, and has already scored a staggering 20 times for the Italian giants so far this campaign. Meanwhile, Messi has found the back of the net 14 times for Barcelona this season - a no mean feat considering how the Catalan giants have struggled for consistency this season.

Why I’m mad with killer herdsmen – Sunday Igboho

In a recent interview with a popular broadcaster, Kola Olootu, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, whose arrest has been ordered by President Buhari, speaks on why he gave a quit order to killer herdsmen in the Ibarapa area of Oke Ogun, Oyo State.

We heard that you have been arrested, is that true?

God forbid.

You were seen in a video playing table tennis; how authentic is that?

It is an authentic video of me at my residence.

The gate of your residence was highly fortified, why?

Tomorrow (Friday) is the D-day when the ultimatum given to killer herdsmen would elapse. This is not an issue that affects Sunday Igboho but a matter of concern to the entire Yoruba race. I am saying it pointedly that I am too strong for Fulani bandits to attack or capture, so this matter is not about me at all. I don’t have a child who would be kidnapped by Fulani men because my children are not even based in the country.

We learnt that when gunshots were fired at you during your visit to Seriki in Igangan community, the bullets did not penetrate?

That shows the efficacy of the Yoruba traditional power. It would not be a hard nut for the Yoruba people to crack, rather the evil marauders killing and maiming our people would be visited with retribution as God lives.

What was the basis of the ultimatum that you gave the killer herdsmen?

The reason for that was the incessant attacks on our people in the Ibarapa and Oke Ogun areas of the (Oyo) state. Our people are no longer safe in their own land. On the contrary, Yoruba people don’t engage in such atrocious things. You cannot see a Yoruba man going about killing people in Kano. In the North, they can behead a Yoruba man for slapping a Hausa/Fulani not to talk of destroying their farmlands. You will recall the case of ‘Oko Oloyun’ ( a popular herbal medicine practitioner)  who was killed during a visit to his country house. He was killed at Igbo Ora. Government said they would unravel the facts behind his killing but till now, the matter has not been unravelled. That killing would clock up a year this month. Another illustrious son, Dr Fatai Aborode, returned from overseas and cultivated a farmland in Igangan. He employed about 300 people. When his farm was plundered by cattle, he lodged a complaint with the Seriki Fulani. Few days after, killer herdsmen kidnapped him, tied him and butchered him. Nothing was done and no arrest was made.

We heard that his killers insisted on getting money before releasing his corpse, could you confirm that?

That was the story that we heard. After that, they also killed a woman, an Alhaja, a native of Imeko who brought the ransom. Many like that had been killed, including the son to Oba Abdulazeez Adeoye of Igangan. Before getting to Seriki’s residence, you have to pass through three local security checkpoints. Seriki is so powerful, (even) more powerful than traditional rulers in the zone. They rape women coming from the farm at will and nothing is done about it. Now, we are determined to defend our people, but they say we don’t have the right to do so.

You alleged that a council chairman narrated the experience of the people of the community to you…

That is it. Some people alleged that I’m doing this to gain cheap popularity, far from it. Some even said perhaps I’m trying to do it to enrich myself, but that is not also correct.  The fact is that I am a rich man. I am not seeking favour from government because I’m a contented person. I don’t need money or favour from government, but I am from Ibarapa. Before now, during hot weather, we used to lay our mats and sleep outside the house or in the courtyards without any fear. In those days, we sometimes returned from farm around 1am without any molestation or fear of possible attacks. But things have changed. People no longer feel safe. Those in government need to know that without the citizens there would be no government.

You alleged that some people were trying to threaten you?

I was being intimidated by some people but I replied saying that whoever would kill or bring me down must be well fortified.

What were the things you saw inside Seriki’s residence?

I saw different expensive vehicles, such as Range Rover Sport, Toyota Venza, Camry and more. I asked him if it was with the proceeds from the cattle that he sold that he was able to buy the expensive vehicles, some of which costs as much as N38m while some cost N8m.

I was told that some traditional rulers in the area collect money from them and honour them with traditional titles. They also give them land.

I told Seriki that we could no longer cohabit with him and his people because he is a betrayer. I am not against Hausa/Fulani people. I have many of them as friends at Sabo, Ibadan.

Two girls nabbed at Lagos airport with tampered passports

OfficersOfficers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State have apprehended two girls with tampered passports.

The suspects: Adebayo Kazeem and Babalola Kehinde, were about to board a Cairo-bound Egypt Airline flight on Thursday, but the Migration Information and Data Analysis System failed to scan their passports due to “an imposed fake identity of the true holder.”

NIS spokesman, DCI Sunday James, disclosed the information in a statement.

According to James, the suspects were duly subjected to interrogation when caught against their claim of traveling for business as the journey was an arranged one by a suspect who they claimed to be their Agent, simply identified as Muri, whose number was called several times without response.

He stated that Muri was alleged to be behind the processing of the tampered passports with a man’s picture on the chip when read by the MIDAS scanner, an offence punishable by the Immigration Act 2015 on Passport related offences relating to aiding, identity theft and tampering with the passport.

The spokesman noted that the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, has directed that a thorough investigation be carried out to expose the syndicates behind this act, and the two passports withdrawn as evidence and kept in custody until Muri is located.

He said the two suspects are witnesses for the prosecution of the agent, whenever he is found.

James said that CGI Babandede therefore warned prospective applicants for the Nigerian passport from allowing criminal elements to take undue advantage of their desperation to perpetrate crimes such as these, that is punishable by imprisonment and or fine in an attempt to procure passport for traveling out of country.

The spokesman added that the two girls are presently helping the Nigeria Immigration Service with useful informations that will help in the arrest of Muri for prosecution of the case.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Shun calls for division, inter-ethnic wranglings - Abiodun

Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Shun calls for division, inter-ethnic wranglings - Abiodun

Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called on Nigerians to shun calls for division, insurgency, banditry and all inter-ethnic, religious and politically motivated wranglings capable of disintegrating the country.

Rather, they should embrace team-spirit, brotherliness and compassion for fellow beings.

The governor made this call on Friday, at the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held at the Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He noted that in order not to make sacrifices made by the country's fallen heroes be in vain, Nigerians  must encourage the use of democratic and appropriate institutions in the processes of seeking redress.

Represented by his deputy, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, at the event attended by traditional rulers, top government functionaries, military and para military organisations, Abiodun opined that whatever peace cannot achieve, war is not likely to achieve it, urging Nigerians to rebuild confidence and trust in the nation's system and leadership.

"As Nigerians, we should love ourselves. We may speak in different tongues. We may face different directions in our worships. But, in our diversity lies our strength. We have walked hand-in-hand and shoulder-to-shoulder to scale many hurdles in the past. We can do it again. All that we need is our joint will and collective determination. Like the heroes that we are honouring today, we must be willing to give our all. Development is only possible in an atmosphere devoid of rancour and acrimony.

"As a matter of fact, we must shun the call for division, insurgency, banditry and all inter-ethnic, religious and politically motivated wrangling. We should embrace team-spirit, brotherliness and compassion for our fellow beings. We must encourage the use of democratic and appropriate institutions in the processes of seeking redress. We should bear it in mind that whatever peace cannot achieve, war is not likely to achieve it; and, if it does, it is at a great expense. Let us, therefore, rebuild confidence and trust in our system. Far above all, let us bequeath a nation that is free of troubles and woes to our children", Abiodun stated.

While praising the gallantry of the armed forces in combating insurgency and banditry in the country, the governor appealed to individuals, corporate bodies and organizations to rise up to the challenge of giving support towards caring for the injured and the families of the dead by donating generously.

Abiodun added that his administration would continue to give support to the armed forces in ensuring that they perform their duties excellently and get encouragement in terms of welfare.

"As we gather to celebrate those heroes of our nation, we must appreciate that they sacrificed yesterday to give us today. We owe the repayment that requires us to give our today to offer a better tomorrow. By doing that, we are “Building our Future Together”.

"Indeed, as the government and people of Ogun State, our hearts and prayers go out, as always, to the relations of the departed heroes and heroines and we pray that God would continue to grant them eternal repose. I appeal to individuals, corporate bodies and organizations to rise up to the challenge of giving support towards caring for the injured and the families of the dead by donating generously. Nigeria and Nigerians should contribute our quota towards the upkeep and welfare of our fighting men and their dependants.

"Our empathies and generous disposition towards them would help in engendering the much desired symbiotic relationship and synergy between the civilian populace and the military in furthering the cause of democratic development in our polity. Indeed, our support will symbolize a measure of gratitude.

"We indeed appreciate and commend the entire Nigerian Armed Forces for their invaluable contributions to the continued building and sustenance of our great nation". Abiodun submitted

We were still able to observe all of the protocols and you could see that everything has gone very well. While wishing both students and staff of the schools a happy and successful new academic term, she stressed that washing of hands, wearing of face masks and maintenance of physical distancing must be adhered to in order to avoid further spread of the virus.

Just IN: FG Cancels School Resumption, Reviewing Opening Process.

Barely a week to the resumption of schools across Nigeria, the Federal Government has made a U-turn on the directive and announced that the date, January 18th, 2021, would be subjected to another review considering an upsurge in the number of Coronavirus positive cases recorded recently in the country.

The government added that from tomorrow, the Ministry of Education would commence a review of the date to determine when safe for schools to resume for the 2020/2021 second term across the country.

Announcing the new development on Monday at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 press briefing in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said that the rising cases have become a source of worries to the government.

“You will all agree with me that what is happening presently is not friendly. And earlier before we made the announcement on resumption, it was agreed that it was not sacrosanct.

“And today at the PTF meeting, we took another look at the number of cases recorded across the country and we decided that there was a need to review the date”, he added.

Earlier, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, who also doubles as Chairman of PTF on COVID-19, raised concerns over the increase in cases and attributed the spike currently experienced across the country to the reopening of schools, and other sectors of the economy.

Mustapha said: “It is however very instructive to stress that factors that have contributed to rise in numbers from late November 2020 included increased local and international travels, business and religious activities, reopening of schools without strict compliance with COIVID-19 safety measures.

“The full import of the fore-going is to press further on the need for us all to elevate the level of our vigilance and compliance with the recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions”.

 Don Jazzy joins #StingyMenAssociation

In the Nigerian digital space, different days birth different trends. Today, the hashtag, #StingyMenAssociation is trending and popular Nigerian celebrity, Don Jazzy, has joined the bandwagon.

The Sweet Boy Association, originated by popular singer Falz, trended in 2018 to celebrate handsome men, however, the Stingy Men Association is a sharp contrast.

Basically, Nigerian men who have 'joined' the association take pride in the fact that they are stingy to ladies; especially when these ladies request money from them.

To make the trend more fun, Twitter users have gone as far as making 'identity cards' to prove their membership while potential members are asking questions on how to join the association.

Showing his legitimacy as a bonafide member of the association, Don Jazzy took to his Twitter handle on Monday to announce that he has joined SMA.

He shared his 'ID' card bearing his photo and his personal details alongside a caption which read, Registration Complete.

According to his membership card, the 38-year-old singer is the ‘Head of Union’ in the Lagos branch while the motto of the association is “Let Me See What I Can Do”- a term popular among men who are not willing to give ladies money upon request.

Ogun uncovers unauthorised flyover bridge in Omo forest, orders demolition

The Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Tunji Akinosi, who led a monitoring team to Laagan Village, where the unauthorised construction of about 50 meters long bridge was located, commanded the settlers to pull it down within two weeks before the next monitoring exercise that would come up on the 21, this month.

Akinosi said aims and objectives behind the heinous act, was for easy transportation of the State’s forest resources by illegal loggers and flitches production, called ‘Alamole’, to be freely stolen and taken away to neighbouring States.

He pointed out that the present administration would not fold its arms and allow illegal settlers to take over the forest reserve, adding that some unscrupulous elements were behind the illegal construction which must have gulped about 15 to 20 million naira.

The Commissioner noted that many of the settlers who keep illegal arms to perpetrate crimes would be arrested and charged to court, saying, armed soldiers would remain part of the frequent monitoring exercises in order to prevent banditry which is becoming prevalent nationwide.

Obaseki triumphs, hails Court verdict

 Obaseki triumphs, hails Court verdict

...says ruling ‘victory for truth, rule of law’

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed the ruling of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on the certificate forgery case brought against him by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor, in a statement, said the judgement is a triumph of the rule of law and a testament to the fact that truth would prevail ultimately no matter how vehemently detractors push lies in the face of incontrovertible evidence.

According to the governor, “The verdict of the Federal High Court, delivered by Honourable Justice Ahmed Mohammed is well-received and a victory for the rule of law. It was a most needless attempt by desperate individuals trying to undo the will of the people through the backdoor but we are happy today that justice and truth have prevailed.”

He noted that the verdict confirms once again that Edo people were well-guided in trusting him to lead them in the September 19th governorship election, promising to continue to prioritise the development of the state not minding the darts thrown by those who are embittered by their loss and continue their attempt to put spanner in the works even when they have been roundly beaten on all fronts.

“My profound gratitude goes to the judiciary who have stood indefatigably for truth and justice; the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR); my party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); our party leaders and members; my teeming supporters; the good people of Edo State and all Nigerians.

LASG INTENSIFIES PUBLIC SENSITISATION ON SECOND WAVE OF COVID-19

LASG INTENSIFIES PUBLIC SENSITISATION ON SECOND WAVE OF COVID-19

The Lagos State Government has intensified its public advocacy and sensitisation on the emergence of a second wave of COVID-19, through interaction between staff of the Ministry of Information and Strategy and members of the public.

At one of such interactions today, the sensitisation team engaged members of the public at markets, motor mechanic workshops, garages and parks at Agege, Ojota, Ikeja, Ogba, Alausa Secretariat and environs, addressing the people and obtaining feedback, just as essential Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials such as flyers and posters were distributed.

The team, led by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Mr. Toyin Adeni-Awosika, emphasised the need for adherence to guidelines stipulated by the government to curtail the spread of the deadly virus, pointing out that the State Government is dismayed at the flagrant disregard for COVID-19 protocols by members of the public.

“People mingle without adherence to physical distancing, face masks are not worn in public places, while hand sanitisers are absent in most public and private institutions. Such practices expose individuals to COVID-19. Everyone must take responsibility to stop the spread of this deadly virus by obeying all guidelines. COVID is real”, he said.

Adeni-Awosika also advised transport operators to take the temperature of commuters, warning them to desist from flouting physical distancing protocols relating to the number of passengers allowed in their commercial vehicles.

During the sensitisation programme, fliers were distributed to pedestrians and motorists at the various locations, while traditional, religious and opinion leaders in communities, Community Development Committees (CDCs) and Community Development Associations (CDAs) were enjoined to influence their subjects and followers to abide by government directives in order to end the COVID-19 pandemic as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has continued its advocacy campaign, through radio jingles about the COVID-19 pandemic, on public and private media in various languages, while its social media handles have also continued to reel out messages to influence an attitudinal change.

COVID-19: SANWO-OLU COMMISSIONS ARMOURED SHIELD ISOLATION CENTRE IN LAGOS

COVID-19: SANWO-OLU COMMISSIONS ARMOURED SHIELD ISOLATION CENTRE IN LAGOS

•Says LASG Will Not Backtrack On Public Health Deliverables

•Governor Did Extremely Well In Leadership, Battling First Pandemic – Reddington Hospital Boss

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday commissioned Armoured Shield Isolation Centre in Victoria Island.

The isolation centre is a purpose-built medical facility equipped with ICU capacities in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The isolation centre was established by Armoured Shield Medical Centre to provide an emergency isolation centre to respond to the potential risk of local transmission of COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the official commissioning of the Armoured Shield Isolation Centre in Victoria Island on Friday, Governor Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that his administration will not backtrack on public health deliverables. He said COVID-19 is still a public health issue, therefore government will continue to lead from the front.

Governor Sanwo-Olu while stressing the need for collaborative efforts to address COVID-19 pandemic in the country, advised the public to keep to all the protocols by wearing their facemask, washing of hands regularly, maintaining social distancing and staying away from huge crowd.

The Governor while commending the visionary thoughts of the Reddington Group for putting up the Armoured Shield Isolation Centre, said the good gesture is a plus for public and private sector collaboration.

He said: “This isolation centre is important for us as a government because it is a clear demonstration of power of collaboration between the public and private sector and ensuring that we cannot do it all by ourselves. And when public issues arose and private sector raises up to such occasion, the least we can do is to encourage them.

“We are going through the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic and we cannot stop the advocacy. We cannot stop talking about it. Some people thought coronavirus is for some set or type of people; it know no race, no religion, no economic status.

“Over the last 10 months, we have seen many cases of coronavirus. We came out of the first wave and we really did not shot down but we were anticipating that there would be a second wave. But we really did not know that even the second wave would be stronger than the first wave.”

Speaking on his administration commitment to addressing COVID-19 pandemic in Lagos State, Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “For us as a government we have continued to heighten and raise the level of our preparedness. Over the last four, five months, we have been building oxygen centres; we have about 10 of them at our secondary facilities and we have commissioned about five of them now.

Because we have taken time to understand the movement of the virus, we know that it affects more people around the respiratory issue and when it affects respiratory organs, you need a lot more oxygen than ordinarily than you have. And so, in anticipation, we have provided that and we are still scaling up that provision.

In his address, the Chairman of Reddington Hospital Group, Dr. Yomi Onabowale, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for battling the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want to commend Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Incident Commander for Lagos State. He has done extremely well in leadership, especially in Lagos State in battling the first pandemic and in ensuring that Lagos was safe. And I have no doubt that he would rise again to meet this current challenge,” he said.

The Armoured Shield Medical Complex and its Command structure is situated in four different locations across Lagos with an Incident Command Office in Victoria Island. It is the only private hospital group in Lagos with in-house facility for PCR testing, ambulance response, CT scan, isolation care, hospital care with Level 3 ICU capacity for COVID-19 treatment.

Twitter, Facebook Block Trump over Capitol Attack Posts

Twitter, Facebook Block Trump over Capitol Attack Posts.

Twitter and Facebook suspended Donald Trump on Wednesday over posts accused of inflaming violence in the US Capitol, as social media scrambled to respond to mayhem by supporters buying into his baseless attacks on the integrity of the election.

The unprecedented sanctions came after the president took to social media to repeat his numerous false claims about fraud and other impropriety in the election he lost to Joe Biden.

“This is an emergency situation and we are taking appropriate emergency measures, including removing President Trump’s video,” said Facebook vice president of integrity Guy Rosen.

“We removed it because on balance we believe it contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence.”

Facebook barred Trump from posting at the social network or its Instagram service for 24 hours, saying his messages were promoting violence.

Trump’s falsehoods, ranging from specific allegations to broad conspiracy theories, also prompted Facebook to change a label added to posts aiming to undermine the election results.

The new label reads: “Joe Biden has been elected president with results that were certified by all 50 states. The US has laws, procedures, and established institutions to ensure the peaceful transfer of power after an election.”

An activist group calling itself a mock Facebook oversight board said sanctions against Trump at the social network were long overdue.

“This is too little, too late,” the group said in a statement.

“Donald Trump has breached Facebook’s own terms and conditions multiple times. His account is not just a threat to democracy but to human life.”

– Permanent Twitter ban? –

The crackdown came after Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol in an attack that led to one woman being shot and killed by police, interrupting congressional debate over Biden’s election victory.

The assault came after the president had urged supporters to march on the seat of government during a speech outside the White House in which he alleged baselessly that the election had been stolen from him.

EndSARS: SANWO-OLU SEEKS FG’S COLLABORATION ON REBUILDING LAGOS

EndSARS: SANWO-OLU SEEKS FG’S COLLABORATION ON REBUILDING LAGOS

•Governor Urges Citizens To Take Responsibility As COVID-19 Cases Rise

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday sought collaboration from the Federal Government in rebuilding Lagos State following the aftermath of last year's #EndSARS protests, hijacked by hoodlums, which led to the destruction of public and private properties and businesses in the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the goal of ensuring Lagos State becomes Nigeria’s investment hub can only be achieved through economic collaboration between the State and the Federal Government.

Speaking to journalists after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Governor Sanwo-Olu said Lagos State Government has started working on how it will make available all that is required by the Lagos State Police Command for the law enforcement agency to be more alive to their responsibilities.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who submitted to President Buhari, the proposals for re-building Lagos State and identified economic opportunities for rebuilding the State during the visit, also explained the plans of the state to tackle the second wave of COVID-19.

He said: “We believe we can further collaborate with the Federal Government, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on all the great work we all are doing. I think as a Commander-in-Chief, it is important for me to give him a head start.

“We also discussed other matters around some collaborative efforts that the state can enjoy with the Federal Government. They are win-win opportunities.  We believe that the Federal Government can help accelerate and fast track some of those opportunities.

“Lagos is the commercial nerve center of the country and so we need to start up on economic programmes and activities that can improve not only our foreign direct investments but also make Lagos an investor destination in the country.

“I also briefed the president about security situation in Lagos and how we can further enhance and make the place a lot more business friendly. All the support we are currently receiving and how we can tweak and improve on all of the support especially with some Federal Government agencies.”

Speaking on his administration's commitment to addressing the second wave of COVID-19 and increase in number of cases of coronavirus infection in Lagos State, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the State Government has built about 10 oxygen plants and commissioned about four and provided other facilities in public building to meet the respiratory requirements.

He said the second wave seems to be a bit more infectious than the first one, considering the number of people who have tested positive to COVID-19 and the fatality rate around the country, especially in Lagos.

The Governor therefore urged the citizens to take responsibility and to know and appreciate that COVID-19 is real, therefore they need to obey all the protocols that have been set out for them to obey.

He said: “We have seen, unfortunately, the fatality rate around the country, even in Lagos. One of the things we have realised is that a lot more people require oxygen attention, they need additional breathing aid. So we have started building what we call oxygen tent, oxygen facilities; we are building about 10 of such facilities.

“We have commissioned about four of them and we are also building additional two oxygen plants in the state so that we can meet the respiratory requirements. We understand the virus more than how we did eight to 10 months ago, so we know what treatment should be. We are better positioned for that.

“We are also doing a lot more testing in Lagos than we were doing five to six months ago: we are doing almost 2,500 to 3,000 tests every day, so we are watching the rate of positivity that we have, which is also high. It has moved from the usual 10 to 12 per cent and we are now seeing positivity rate of about 25 and sometimes 30 per cent. That is actually very disturbing.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also disclosed to the journalists that Lagos State government has supported some of those affected by the #EndSARS protests.

“We are carefully taking a proper study to know what we need to do, taking our time to get it right but we have started something. Businesses that were affected, somebody having a shop looted or burnt or something. We have been able to directly support such businesses, especially on a micro, small level using the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund.

“They have started intervening and supporting some of these small businesses, giving them grants, giving them soft loans and making sure that they can come back together very quickly,” the governor said.

OBASEKI, PDP CLOSE DEFENSE IN ALLEGED CERTIFICATE FORGERY SUIT

Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki has closed his defense in the case of alleged certificate forgery instituted by the All Progressives Congress APC and a party chieftain, Edobor Williams.

Galaxy's Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that Obaseki, the PDP and INEC, all defendants in the suit have closed their case.

The first defendant had closed its defense by presenting the third and final witness, Professor Eghosa Osaghae of the Department of Comparative Politics, University of Ibadan.

The certified true copy of the witness' Political Science certificate issued by the University of Ibadan in 1979 was admitted as exhibit by the court.

He related his experience trying to make a duplicate copy of his certificate on an A4 paper, where he said the portion of the document that had the date and registrar's signature was cut off in the process of photocopying.

During cross examination of the witness, he said with the constraints in photocopying, he will take the risk and tender an incomplete copy of his certificate than tendering nothing at all, bearing in mind that it is subject to verification.
