ZAMFARA BANDIT, DAMINA, SHOT DEAD BY BANDIT LEADER, DOGO GIDE

A notorious bandit and cattle rustling kingpin simply identified as Damina has been shot dead in Zamfara state.

In July, he had attacked Tungar Baushe and Randa villages, where several people were killed and more than 100 residents, mostly women and children, were abducted.

It was gathered that Damina died from severe injuries he sustained following a deadly clash between members of his gang and those of Dogo Gide at a spot near Chilin and Fammaje, two farming communities that had been under his control.

The clash between Damina and Dogo Gide.

Daily Trust, citing residents familiar with the crisis, reported that Dogo Gide had warned Damina to stop attacking communities and killing peasant farmers but the latter did not heed the warnings.

A source was quoted as narrating the incident that led to the clash that eventually claimed Damina's life.

The source said: “Damina drew the ire of Dogo Gide after he imposed what he called harvest levies on Chillin, Fammaje and one other village. He demanded that the residents must mobilize and raise N6 million for them to get his nod for the harvest of their farm produce.

“Apart from this, Damina had, few weeks back, invaded Babbar Doka, killed two people, including a woman whom he burnt alive when he set her room ablaze. The Residents of the village had to flee and take refuge in Dansadau. The community is under Dogo Gide’s control and the residents there are always feeling protected under him.

Security and state government officials could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.

Senator Saidu Muhammad Dansadau reacts

However Senator Saidu Muhammad Dansadau corroborated the story. “Yes it is true Damina was killed by Dogo Gide. We have the information on what had happened.”

“Damina, had about three weeks ago , attacked Babbar Doka community and killed and displaced residents there. The community is where the armed criminals are getting their basic needs and has been under Dogo Gide’s protection for quite a long time. “Dogo Gide had reached an agreement with those communities in southwestern Dansadau town that they should go doing their businesses or farming activities and no one would be harassed by any armed bandits or group of armed bandits.

“But, when Damina arrived a year ago Dogo Gide tried to draw his attention to the pact he reached with the locals there but he Damina ignored it. Dogo Gide is also hunting for another kidnapping kingpin called Ali Kachalla and the rivalry between the armed groups is a good omen for residents,” Senator Dansadau said.

EndSARS : We will never be silenced – Falz

Falz, has advised Nigerian youths not be silenced by anyone as the End Sars remembrance protest is fast approaching.

Reacting to a statement by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, barring interested persons from staging any EndSARS remembrance protest, Falz said innocent people were killed just because they were asking not to be killed or brutalized.

Via his Instagram page, the Singer alleged that since the unfortunate incident a year ago, no one has been punished for the crime.

He wrote, “20:10:20 [update] They killed innocent souls that were simply asking not to be killed or brutalized.

“A year later, no one has been punished yet for those heinous crimes.

“A supposed Police Commissioner “warned” against citizens exercising their fundamental human rights. Yes, a Police Commissioner.

“A couple of well-meaning citizens decided to put together a summit to reflect on last year’s events & honour the lost souls. Event centre pulls out (“instructions from above”)

As I type this, there is already HEAVY police presence at the Lekki toll gate.

“Best thing they could come up with is organizing “concerts” to try and distract us from remembering the real heroes in all of this. The people they murdered.

“What we will never do, however, is be quiet. We will NEVER EVER EVER EVER be silenced.

“Not today, not on the 20th, not ever”

Zoning may leave us with useless presidential candidates in 2023 - Sanusi

Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, the former Emir of Kano, has said zoning may leave Nigeria with two “useless presidential candidates” in 2023.

Currently, the issue of zoning has heated the polity as the governors are divided along the north and south.

While Southern governors have demanded that their region should produce the next president, their northern counterparts have said a rotational presidency is unconstitutional.

But speaking on an Arise Television programme, Sanusi said he has always been opposed to the idea of a rotational presidency.

He said what Nigeria needs at the moment is a president who can deliver.

“I have always objected to this idea that we should focus on where the president comes from. We have got southern governors saying we want the presidency and some northern governors saying that they want it in the north. Have you noticed that nobody has given the name of what they want?” he said.

“This whole thing is to corner the presidency to one part of the country and the big masquerade will come out. And that is why at the end of the exercise, you end up as Nigeria… presented with two useless candidates. Those who want to be president should show their face either from the north or the south.

“Meanwhile, we have before us very serious issues. You have a simple issue of electronic transmission of results which is designed to make the electoral process fairer and you have people saying that they do not want it, shamelessly announcing to the country that they want to rig. Why are we not talking about these issues?

“The greatest weakness we have as a country is that we do not think. We are very smart when it comes to making money by doing our work but we do not apply critical intellect to and these guys just take the entire country for a ride.

“Give me a president from any part of the country who can deliver and we should vote for him. He is not taking the presidency to his hometown.”

Sanusi, however, noted that although he’s an advocate of less money at the centre, the governors slamming the federal government are also guilty of not distributing funds to the local government.

He said, “I don’t want to talk about this matter because it’s in court but what we need is to learn how to distribute our resources properly.

“I’m a strong advocate of less money at the centre because this puts too much concentration on money from Abuja but the bulk of this Tax problem comes from not implementing what we have.

“These governors fighting for VAT are extremely undemocratic they hold on to money meant for the local government yet keeps complaining.

“The state governors complain what federal government do to them but don’t care about what they do to the local government, thereby ignoring the constitution.

“If we really want to put in for federalism we need to respect our constitution and do it at all tiers of government then I believe our constitution can work.

“ Let’s make what we have work and we’ll see this constitution is not that bad.”

PDP picks holes in President Buhari’s Independence Day broadcast

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the admission by President Muhammadu Buhari in his Independence Anniversary speech that Nigerians have faced difficulties that are similar to the situation of the civil war under his administration vindicates its stand that his government is incompetent, confused and the worst in the history of our country.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, while reacting Friday, said the fact that President Buhari compared the challenges and sufferings being faced by Nigerians under his administration to the agony of the civil war underscored the horrible situation in the country today.

The President, while referring to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, said, “The past eighteen months have been some of the most difficult periods in the history of Nigeria. Since the civil war, I doubt whether we have seen a period of more heightened challenges than what we have witnessed in this period.”

Ologbondiyan said it was a pathetic antithesis for Mr President to attempt to exonerate himself by claiming that no government, since 1999, had done what his administration had done in six years, stressing that the claim portrays desperation to parry blame for the consequences of the misrule of his administration.

“Rather, what obtains in the public space is that no government has since 1999 brought our nation to her knees on every facet of life like the Buhari administration.

“It is appalling that in his speech, President Buhari had no concrete assurance on how to revamp our economy and how to end acts of terrorism in our country. Instead, the speech, as usual, dwelt on empty claims that have no bearing with the actual situation in the country.

“Such disposition further exposes the insensitivity of the APC towards the plight of millions of Nigerians and confirms that our nation will end in ruins if the APC is allowed to stay in power any moment beyond May 29, 2023,” he added.
