EndSARS: SANWO-OLU CALLS FOR HARMONY

 EndSARS: SANWO-OLU CALLS FOR HARMONY

…Invites youths for Peace Walk to herald 'healing of Lagos’

Lagos State deserves true healing after the disturbances that trailed last year’s protests against police brutality, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Tuesday.

He said only sustenance of harmony can guarantee the realisation of aspirations of all residents.

Sanwo-Olu spoke in a live broadcast held at the State House, Alausa, on the State Government’s position on the recommendations of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on EndSARS submitted a fortnight ago.

The Governor said the State currently faced the hard choice of restoring harmony or doing itself a great harm, urging residents to join his administration in strengthening harmony and put the State on the path of peace.

Sanwo-Olu asked residents to reject those fueling anarchy and suspicion, clinging to unsubstantiated belief that carried no weight of verifiable evidence, while choosing emotion over facts.

His administration, he said, is ready to facilitate better communication between the youths and the State’s security machinery to resolve issues before they become intractable.

He said he would be leading ‘A Walk for Peace’ in December to herald the healing of the land, extending an open invitation to the youths, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society groups, students and the media as well as other stakeholders to join him in the Peace Walk.

The Governor specifically invited Folarin Falana (Falz), Debo Adebayo (Mr. Marcaroni), Dele Farotimi, Temitope Majekodunmi, Segun Awosanya (Segalinks), Adedotun (Just Detoun), Seun Kuti, Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu and Commander of Rapid Response Squad (RRS), CSP Yinka Egbeyemi and others to join him in the “historic march for our dear Lagos.”

He said: “Nobody will build this city for us. Let us show the world who we are. We are Lagosians. A people of great renown, driven by the irrepressible spirit of Lagos. It is a testimony to our strength and resilience as a people that, despite the huge losses incurred because of these terrible incidents, we have bounced back, with our economy as vibrant and virile as ever. I have no doubt whatsoever that our prospects are as bright as ever and the best lies ahead of Lagos State and Nigeria.

“We will make it easier for our young people to initiate formal complaints on human rights violations through the Ministry of Justice. We will also improve the coordination between the state government and the security agencies, including the police and the military. In this vein, we are studying how to improve security policy formulation, information sharing, and clarifying rules of engagement in times of social unrest.

“Just as we have established a mechanism to compensate all those who lost homes, businesses, and livelihoods to the violent destruction of October 2020, we shall also establish a detailed procedure for the just compensation of citizens with verified claims of police brutality committed during the protests.”

Speaking on last year's EndSARS protests and the events that followed, especially the hijack of the protests by hoodlums, which led to the destruction of public and private property worth billions of naira, the Governor said the Government, the youth, protesters, the Police and other security agencies have learned the appropriate lessons from the EndSARS protests, particularly the Lekki Tollgate incident, with a view to averting any recurrence to the detriment of the State.

On mixed reactions following the release of the report of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry, Sanwo-Olu said his administration remained committed to the process that would bring a closure to a “painful episode” in the history of the State.

The much-expected White Paper, the Governor pledged, will be issued later in the day.

He recalled that the panel was originally inaugurated to investigate allegations of police brutality committed by the disbanded SARS and in the aftermath of what happened on October 20, 2020, he decided to expand the mandate to include investigating what happened at the Lekki Tollgate that night.

He said: “As a matter of good faith and a sincere commitment to uncovering the truth, we constituted a panel of individuals that we believed were independent, credible, and representative of the various stakeholder communities interested in the movement against police brutality.

“Apart from the chairman of the panel being a respected retired jurist, various stakeholders including the youths, #EndSARS protesters, the police and civil society groups were represented on the panel. I am sure no member of the panel can claim that the State Government made any attempt to influence them in any way throughout the duration of its sitting.

“While I commend the panel for undertaking its task to the best of its abilities, it is however regrettable that the panel’s work and the leakage of an unauthorised version of the report have generated much tension. Sadly, a deep wound has been reopened.

“The heated exchanges among various shades of opinion on the report have unfortunately put us all at the risk of missing the larger picture; the fact that what we all seek in common is a land in which we are all safe and secure, law enforcement agents are trusted, and justice is guaranteed for all.

“We have no intention to engage in histrionics or further inflame passion on a matter that has generated intense interest and controversy nationally and internationally. Our decisions and actions will be based entirely on the law, the weight of evidence, and unblemished respect for the truth.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, while expressing his administration’s commitment to end human rights abuses, said he has never been in any doubt as to the sincerity, patriotism and noble motivations of both organisers of EndSARS protests and those who participated in the movement to see an end to the human rights abuses by the now disbanded Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS).

He said it is also on record that the Federal Government accepted all the demands of the protesters, including the immediate scrapping of SARS, adding that the National Economic Council (NEC) also recommended the establishment of State Panels of Inquiry into cases of police brutality and the Lagos State Government was the first to set up its own panel.

He said: “I can boldly say that no State took the advocacy for police reforms and justice in the face of documented brutality more seriously than we did in Lagos. We have so far paid N420 million in compensation to victims of police brutality, in line with the recommendations of the panel.

“My good people of Lagos State, you will also recall that in solidarity with the protesters, I joined our youths at various points during the demonstrations, particularly at the Lekki Tollgate and Alausa.

“I received the charter of demands of the protesters and promised to pass them on to the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I kept my word and passed on the demands to the President, who promised to act promptly on the issues raised.  However, perhaps as a result of entrenched lack of trust between the government and the governed over the years, the protesters responded to the government's concessions with skepticism, and the demonstrations continued, even growing in intensity.

“Regrettably, what had been very well organized and peaceful protests were subsequently hijacked in different parts of the country, particularly in Lagos. In the ensuing descent into anarchy, many of our compatriots were caught up in the violence. Several policemen were killed. Public and private property, including critical infrastructure, were set on fire, leading to losses estimated at several billions of naira.

“At that point, I imposed a curfew to restore normalcy in Lagos. We had only one goal in mind: the maintenance of law and order, and the protection of citizens going about their daily lives. This is more than a legal duty. It is a sacred obligation under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which I swore to uphold,” the governor explained.

Timi Frank lauds Davido’s N250m for orphanages

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Sunday, commended ace Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, for his philanthropy in dedicating N250million to be shared among orphanages in the country.

Frank in a statement in Abuja, described the gesture as laudable and worth emulating.

He urged Nigerian celebrities to emulate Davido’s action by always giving back to society especially the less privileged.

Frank, who is the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), Ambassador to East Africa and Middle East, said the spirited move by Davido should serve as a wake up call on the Nigerian government as to what they ought to be doing if they are serious about poverty alleviation and eradication in the country.

“Davido threw a N100million Challenge to mark his birthday and raised N200million. He decided to add N50million to make it N250million.

“Now he has set up a Committee of five to distribute the N250million to orphanages across Nigeria.

“Nigerian celebrities and well-to-do Nigerians must borrow a leaf from this noble gesture. Above all, the Federal, States and Local Governments must learn from this,” Frank said.

He lamented that the Federal and State Governments, have failed to directly provide succour to the less privileged in the country despite their plethora of programmes purportedly targeted at the down trodden in society.

According to him, it is still a mystery how the humongous amounts donated to the States and Federal Government as palliative to cushion the harsh effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on vulnerable Nigerians were administered. Nobody has given account of the money.

He said while most of the money have ended up in private pockets, the intended beneficiaries whose sources of livelihoods were disrupted or completely wiped out by the lockdown have been left to their fate.

“This is why Davido’s action is a ray of of light in a dark horizon. He deserves high praise. We urge celebrities and the government to show to the people that they care by giving back to society,” Frank said.

Emirates suspends flights to Nigeria

Dubai’s flagship carrier, Emirates, has yet again announced a suspension of flights to and from Nigeria until November 30.

The airline in a statement on its website said customers who have been to or connected through Nigeria in the last 14 days will not be permitted on any Emirates flights bound for Dubai.

“Affected flight bookings have been cancelled,” it stated.

In June, the airline announced a suspension of flights to and from Nigeria from June 21.

“In line with government directives, passenger flights to and from Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) are suspended with effect from 21 June 2021 until further notice,” the airline said at the time.

The directive came barely two days after the airline had announced the resumption of flights to Nigeria after weeks of suspension.

The UAE authorities had initially fixed June 23, 2021, for the resumption of flights to Nigeria. Flights had been suspended in March over a diplomatic row on COVID-19 protocol

In its new directive, the airline advised customers affected by the suspension to simply hold on to their tickets until flights resume.

“If your flight has been cancelled or impacted by route suspensions due to COVID‑19 restrictions, you don’t need to call us immediately for rebooking,” the airline said.

“You can simply hold on to your Emirates ticket and when flights resume, get in touch with your booking office or us to make new travel plans. Get all the information on the “Keep your ticket” option here.

“Emirates regrets any inconvenience caused.”

NFF: We have not sacked Gernot Rohr

NFF: We have not sacked Gernot Rohr

Nigeria’s football –governing body, the NFF says there is no truth to reports that it has sacked Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Gernot Rohr.

The name of the Franco-German has played widely in both local and international media in the course of Thursday, with most platforms stating authoritatively that the 68-year old has been given the heave-ho by the Nigeria Football Federation, his employers.

However, President of the NFF, Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick, said that no such decision has been taken.

“The Board of the NFF is studying the report of the Technical Committee, which it submitted after the match against Cape Verde in Lagos on Tuesday. There are a number of possibilities but we have not taken a decision to sack Gernot Rohr. I want to assure that whatever decision is eventually taken will be one that will please the generality of Nigerians.

“Mr Rohr has a contract with the NFF and there is a procedure for disengagement. If we get to that bridge, both parties will look at the contract and see what has to be done both ways. The Super Eagles’ squad is a national asset and we are just fortunate to be in that space to take decisions. Any decision we take must be what will be acceptable to Nigerians from far and near.”

Rohr, a former Germany international defender, has led the Super Eagles in 54 international matches over the course of five years and three months, winning 28 of those matches.

Ogere Tanker Inferno: We'll hold contractor responsible, says Abiodun

Ogere Tanker Inferno: We'll hold contractor responsible, says Abiodun

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said the contractor handling the Lagos-Ibadan expressway would be held accountable for his failure to provide safety signs on the road which had in recent times led to the unfortunate but preventable loss of lives and carnage on the country’s busiest route.

Prince Dapo Abiodun made this known during an on-the-spot assessment of Ogere toll gate on Wednesday while commiserating with families of those who lost their loved ones in the inferno that claimed five lives.

Gov. Abiodun said he would take the issue up with the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, so as to ensure expeditious completion of the rehabilitation works that has been on for decades.

"I am going to take this up with the Minister of Works. This contractor has to be held accountable; we cannot continue to pussyfoot around a project that is so important, particularly around this corridor.

"I want to call on the contractor handling this project to expedite action. We can't take any more excuses on this project. We are going to be holding them responsible for any accident because safety measures are not in place, no safety signs and this is just an unnecessary loss of lives for us.

"We've had too many of these type of sad days on our major highways in Ogun State but of particular note is the recurrence of this type of incidents around this corridor of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway," he said.

Abiodun while noting that the drivers of the trucks involved in the accident could not be totally blamed for the accident as a result of the inability of the contractor to provide all the necessary safety signs, added that the construction had “been too protracted.”

"These people (drivers) alone, cannot be faulted; construction is ongoing, and there are no proper safety signs. Anywhere in the world, there would be enough signs that would tell whoever it is that is on the road that the road is now a dual carriage way," he said.

The state helmsman while urging road users around the corridor to take their time while driving through the area said they should be cautious that “this is now a dual carriage road”.

He told them to drive responsibly as well as take into consideration other road users.

The Governor while appreciating the men of the traffic service of the state, the Federal Road Safety and the fire service for their effort at the scene, called on the people in the vicinity to stay away from the scene of the accident as arrangements were being made to transship the petroleum produce from the affected trucks into other trucks.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele called on road users in the axis to abide with the instructions of the traffic managers as well as abide with road safety signs.

She noted that the police would be on ground to forestall the break of law and order.

The governor and his deputy were accompanied on the assessment tour by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Lanre Bankole, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ahmed Umar, and members of his cabinets.

They governor warned that miscreants who would want to turn the accident in the axis into their gains would be dealt with by law enforcement.

Why I Beat Up My Lecturer To Coma - UNILORIN 400 Level Student Reveals

Why I Beat Up My Lecturer To Coma - UNILORIN 400 Level Student Reveals

Captain Walz, a Unilorin final year student of the Department of Microbiology, who bruised a female lecturer, Mrs Zakariyau, has explained the reasons for his action.

He alleged to have gone to the office of the lecturer to beg her to help wave the required SIWES course which he missed due to an unexpected event.

He claimed to have met Mrs Zakariyau numerous times, but all led to negative responses before the last Thursday assault on the lecturer.

Salaudeen Waliu, while speaking to University Campus Journalists, UCJ-Ilorin, claimed that ” months before the last Thursday incident, he was arrested and locked up for two months, thereby warranting his inability to attend SIWES duties.”

He said he had gone to Allen Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos State, to meet a friend for the first time. He was waiting for the friend when according to him, he “felt the impulse to urinate.”

Salaudeen said he urinated near a car parked by drainage when he was challenged by someone who must have washed the car.

He said he was accused of being a thief and was not allowed to explain himself before mobs descended on him, meted out jungle justice and handed him over to the police which led to his detention for two months.

The final year student said after the incident in Lagos, he approached Mrs Zakariyau to explain to her his ordeal but the lecturer said there was no help to offer, except he joined the next set which would result in an extra year.

He said on the fateful Thursday when he entered the lecturer’s office, she ordered him out of her office.

” I got angry, I didn't know what came over me, I started arguing and she told me to leave her office, I told her if I don’t leave, what is she going to do?

“She then threw a mug at me which injured me and I started beating her,” he added.

Salaudeen said the female lecturer did not fight back, so he went on to beat her and later dragged her out of her office to continue the beating.

” I dragged her out and she ran. I chased and kept beating her before people came. I tried to run but was later caught by the school security,” he stated in the security cell of the institution where he was locked up since he was returned from ‘F’ Divisional Police station, Tanke in Ilorin, the Kwara state.

Lagos Panel Report Reveals Names Of Peaceful Protesters Shot Dead By Nigerian Army At Lekki Tollgate

Lagos Panel Report Reveals Names Of Peaceful Protesters Shot Dead By Nigerian Army At Lekki Tollgate

The panel was inaugurated on October 19, 2020, to look into complaints of citizens against human rights abuses by the police.

The Lagos State Judicial Panel on #EndSARS has revealed the names of nine peaceful protesters who were shot dead by the Nigerian Army at the Lekki Tollgate last year.

Following the incident at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, the Terms of Reference of the panel was expanded to cover that incident.

The panel sat for well over one year and took testimonies of petitioners, witnesses, experts and lawyers.

In its report obtained by VERYCONCERN on Monday, the panel listed names of nine people (all male) who were shot dead at the scene of the protest last year.

Their names are; Victor Sunday Ibanga; Abuta Solomon; Jide; Olalekan Abideen Ashafa; Olamilekan Ajasa; Kolade Salami; Folorunsho Olabisi; Kenechukwu Ugoh and Nathaniel Solomon.

Four others: Abiodun Adesanya; Ifeanyi Nicholas Eji; Tola and Wisdom were missing and presumed dead.

The report noted that 39 other persons either sustained gunshot injuries, were assaulted or were victims of the stampede that occurred following the military invasion.

The panel further noted, “The atrocious maiming and killing of unarmed, helpless and unresisting protesters, while sitting on the floor and waving their Nigerian flags, while singing the National Anthem can be equated to a ‘massacre’ in context.

“A massacre has been defined as the killing of multiple individuals, which is considered to be morally unacceptable especially when perpetrated by political actors against defenceless victims.”—Wikipedia

“The Panel considered whether what took place at the Lekki Toll Gate on the 20th October 2020 was a MASSACRE. According to the learned authors of Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, one of the meanings of MASSACRE is ‘the act or instance of killing a number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty.’

“Against the above ‘contextual’ definitions, the Panel considered the following evidence before it: The EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate were defenceless members of the civil populace, youth and young adults;

“Both the Lagos State Government and indeed the Federal Government were well aware of their status, objectives and the nature of their protest;

“The presence of protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate did not threaten the territorial integrity of Nigeria and could not be considered as a civil insurrection to warrant the intervention of the Nigerian Army; some top officials of the Lagos State Government met with the youths at the Lekki Toll Gate around 12-1 pm of October 20, 2020, seeking selected representatives to discuss an urgent matter with them with a view to persuading them to leave the Lekki Toll Gate; Officers and soldiers of 65 Batallion of the Nigerian Army, led by Lt. Col Bello, left their base with blank and live ammunitions to confront and disperse youths holding only their national flags, with live bullets;

”The soldiers actually shot blank and live bullets directly and pointedly into the midst of the protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, with the deliberate intention to assault, maim and kill;

“The soldiers turned back ambulances that were invited to render first aid and assistance to the wounded protesters.”

The panel further found, “From the evidence of General A.I.Taiwo (Commander, 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Nigerian Army, Victoria Island, Lagos) on pages 6, 7, 21, 22, the Panel finds that both blank and live bullets were fired by the Nigerian Army at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, for the following reasons:

“Apart from the military men in uniform, the Army left its base with vehicles, rifles and guns, which contained both live and blank bullets. General Taiwo admitted at page 22 that the Army went to the Lekki Toll Gate with live ammunition.

“As of October 30, 2020, when the Panel visited the Lekki Toll Gate for its on the spot assessment, it was still able to recover two bullets shells which were duly analyzed by the forensic expert hired by the Panel, Sentinel, who is very familiar with weapons used by the Nigerian Army. These bullet shells were said to be the same as or similar to the ones normally used by the Nigerian Army and they were expended shells, meaning they were fired live at the Lekki Toll Gate.

“Petitioners and witnesses appeared before the Panel to give vivid accounts of shootings by the Army into the crowd of protesters. The Panel finds their testimonies credible being eyewitness accounts and would ascribe probative value to their testimony over that of General Taiwo who was not physically present at the Lekki Toll Gate.

“The Panel finds as credible, the case of the EndSARS protesters that soldiers shot directly at protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020 as confirmed by Lagos State Ballistic Expert, Willie-Harry on page 244 that some video evidence indicate “… instances where troops were seen to be re-arming their weapons before either discharging them to the air or purposely in the direction of the protesters ...”

“The Panel believes that the deliberate absence of officers of the Nigerian Army who were present at the Lekki Toll Gate and who were summoned by the Panel was a calculated attempt to conceal material evidence from the Panel and verily believes  that their presence would have damaged the case of the Nigerian Army.

“The Panel finds the evidence, presentation and report of the Ballistic Expert engaged by Lagos State as too general and unrelated to the specific evidence before the Panel on the Lekki Toll Gate Incident. The said report was based largely on extraneous materials that were not produced or tendered before the Panel in order to determine their source or relevance.

“The witness admitted that he did not work with any document or video admitted before the Panel, he did not speak with any of the protesters or petitioners, the doctors or the pathologists or indeed any other relevant witness known to the Panel.”

On injuries from Lekki Tollgate, the Panel “finds that the testimony of Dr Babajide Lawson of Reddington Hospital as to the nature of treatment offered victims of the Lekki Toll Gate Incident in relation to gunshot wounds which were high velocity ‘entry and exit’, all indicate injuries from military weapons, consistent with the bullet shells recovered by the Panel during its visit and the witnesses that testified before the Panel”.

It also “finds corroboration of the case of gunshot wounds in the testimony of Dr. Aromolate Ayobami of Grandville Trauma Centre, where several victims of gunshot wounds were treated comprehensively and discharged.

“The testimony of the EndSARS protesters, especially Miss Serah Ibrahim, Mr. Onileowo Legend, Miss Dabira Ayuku, Miss Kamsichukwu (all of whom were personally present at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20), as to the fact that the Army shot live bullets, video evidence of casualties, fatalities, etc, all lend credence to the fact that the Army shot at the protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20 2020 which resulted into deaths and other physical injuries.”

“The Panel also found that the conduct of the Nigerian Army was exacerbated by its refusal to allow ambulances render medical assistance to victims who required such assistance. The Army was also found not to have adhered to its own Rules of Engagement.

“The Panel found that the Nigerian Police Force deployed its officers to the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the 20th October, 2020 and between that night and the morning of the 21st of October, 2020, its officer shot at, assaulted and battered unarmed protesters, which led to injuries and deaths. The police officers also tried to cover up their actions by picking up bullets.

“The panel found that LCC hampered the panel's investigation by refusing to turn over some useful and vital information/evidence as requested by the Panel and the Forensic Expert engaged by the panel, even where such information and evidence was by the company's admission, available. It manipulated the incomplete CCTV Video footage of the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the 20th of October 2020, which it tendered before the Panel.

“The Panel found that there was an invitation of the Nigerian Army to Lagos State made by the Lagos State Government through the Governor before the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army deployed its soldiers to the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the 20th of October.

“The Panel found that there was an attempt to cover up the Incident of the 20th of October by the cleaning of the Lekki Toll Gate and the failure to preserve the scene ahead of potential investigations.”

Obi Cubana Did not Take Photo with EFCC Staff

Obi Cubana Did not Take Photo with EFCC Staff

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to fake news trending on social media with the caption, “EFCC Crew poses for quick photograph with billionaire socialite and businessman Obi Cubana”.

The caption is as fake as any fake news can ever be because, at no time during his ongoing investigation, period in custody or release did Obi Cubana pose for photographs with EFCC staff.

Deji Adesogan a.k.a Uncle Deji, a popular security analyst using his social media handle, has further debunked the fake news, saying:

“This post is deliberately misleading, this picture was taken 7th October 2021 during a book launch of Colonel Chukwu Obasi at Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja in which Obi Cubana attended as a guest”.

Members of the public are strongly advised to ignore the fake news and misleading imputation which has been traced to the social media account of Sabi Radio (sabiradio), which first went to town with the fake news at 1.06 pm on 5 November, 2021. Sabiradio’s watermark is telltale on the photograph.

The Commission shall not hesitate to take urgent necessary steps to address this and other fake news seeking to drag EFCC’s hard-won name and professional reputation in the mud.

‘ONLY 19 FAMILIES REPORT MISSING PERSONS; 32 BODIES RECOVERED SO FAR’ - SANWO-OLU

‘ONLY 19 FAMILIES REPORT MISSING PERSONS; 32 BODIES RECOVERED SO FAR’ - SANWO-OLU

…Governor back at site of Ikoyi building collapse

…Emergency teams ramp up recovery operation

For the third time within 72 hours, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was at the site of the Ikoyi building collapse to see how the search and recovery operation was being conducted, and also to boost the morale of the emergency responders on site.

The Governor expressed satisfaction with the rescue operation, commending the first responders for their efforts. He also met with some of the distressed family members at the site, cheering them and raising their hopes, while the rescue efforts progressed.

Sanwo-Olu was in company of his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, at the site for over three hours.

The actual number of persons trapped in the collapsed 21-storey building remains unclear as at Thursday afternoon, but 32 fatalities have been recorded, the Governor confirmed.

Sanwo-Olu, while giving an update to the press, disclosed that family members had submitted 19 names of those still missing, saying the ongoing corona inquest on the bodies evacuated from the site was expected to be concluded by Friday (tomorrow) after which families would be invited to identify them.

He said: “Yesterday (Wednesday), we opened a register for people that have missing persons or loved ones whom they believed must have been at the site before the collapse. As I speak here, it is only 19 names of missing persons that have been registered. Some of them have pictures, others do not. This list would help us to get information on manifest of those at the site.

“As at this afternoon, we have recovered a total of 32 bodies. We are conducting a corona inquest on the bodies and by tomorrow (Friday), we hope the exercise would have been concluded. That is the deadline we gave to the corona, so that the families can come and identify the bodies recovered so far.”

Earlier on Thursday, the Governor visited Lagos Island General Hospital where survivors of the building collapse are being given medical attention.

One of the nine people rescued alive, Sanwo-Olu said, has been moved to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja for advanced medical examination, but he is not in a life-threatening situation. Three survivors were discharged two days ago.

The Governor said he had ordered structural integrity test on two high-rise structures in the premises where the 21-storey collapsed. The action, he said, is necessary to safeguard the lives of emergency workers on the rescue operation.

Sanwo-Olu appealed to journalists covering the incident on speculative reporting and sensationalism, asking them to confirm any unclear details about the search and rescue operation from the official channel of communication. The Governor was reacting to inconsistent figures of fatality being spread by the media.

He said: “Ministries of Information, Special Duties and Health are fully on ground at the scene. Among these key ministries, members of the public can get answers to any information not clear to them.”

The multi-sectoral search and rescue operation was ongoing at press time. The effort is being led by teams of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), with the support of construction giants, Julius Berger, Craneburg, HiTech and China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC).

EFCC quizzes Obi Cubana in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly detained a popular socialite and entrepreneur, Obinna Iyiegbu, widely known as Obi Cubana.

Sources who have knowledge of the case told newsmen that the Anambra-born business tycoon arrived at the headquarters of the EFCC at Jabi, Abuja at about 12 p.m. on Monday.

As of the time of filing this case, he was still being interrogated by operatives of the commission, according to the sources who asked not to be named because they had no authority to talk to the press about the case.

Though allegations against the socialite were sketchy as of press time, the sources disclosed that his case borders on alleged money laundering and tax fraud.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said he had yet to be briefed on the development.

Mr Iyiegbu held a lavish funeral for his mother, Ezinne Iyiegbu, in Oba, Anambra State in July.

Since the talk-of-the-town burial, Mr Iyiegbu has become an inspirational grass-to-grace figure appearing in interviews where he told stories of how he started in a one-room apartment as a fresh graduate undergoing the mandatory national youth service in Abuja in 1999

He told BBC Pidgin that he started as an estate agent and made his first N1 million through a house furnishing contract he got at that time.

Today, he sits atop sprawling investments in entertainment, hospitality, real estate, among others.
