Why I removed my son from public school - El-Rufai

The Governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, has said he pulled his son out of a public school due to kidnapping threats.

This is as he said his decision to enrol his son in a public school to affirm his confidence in the Kaduna State education system.

El-Rufai said this on Thursday during the weekly ministerial briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the State House, Abuja.

He revealed that his government had hired more people than it had sacked in the last five years, adding that 7,700 qualified secondary school teachers have been recruited and would be deployed once he was done purging secondary schools of underqualified teachers.

“We fired 22,000 teachers and hired 25,000. We have tested them recently, some of them have fallen back and failed. We are going to fire them and hire more people. We are determined to improve teacher quality because the teacher is education, it’s not the classroom.

“We all thought the thugs were going to primary schools. Now we have to get rid of some teachers in secondary schools as well. But we have hired about 7,700 secondary school teachers. They are just standing by for us to ease these ones out. And we have taken a decision as public officers to enrol our children in public schools.

“I took my child to public school because we want to show that we believe in the quality of public education which we all got and that I had to pull my son out because some people wanted to mount a special operation to kidnap him. I don’t think they will succeed, but it will put other children at risk.

“So I pulled him out. So he’s getting home-schooling until the situation improves,” the former FCT Minister explained.

New tenants disappear with three children in Ogun barely 24 hours after moving

Three children have been kidnapped by two new tenants, barely 24 hours after they moved into an apartment at Itsekiri street in Ajuwon, Ogun state.

The two women said to be in their 30s, moved into a one-room apartment in the compound on February 17.

They reportedly disappeared with the children on the evening of Friday February 18.

An eyewitness told TheCable that the women claimed they were students of a school based in Ikeja, Lagos, and would stay at the apartment for three weeks, pending the conclusion of their examination

The women were said to have acted very friendly with the residents of the compound within the short time they spent there.

They disappeared with the kids after claiming they were visiting a shop in the neighborhood with them.
The case has been reported to the Ajuwon police station.

Grace, wife of one Kingsley Peter, said her husband was arrested and has not been released and the barber who introduced the suspects to her husband has also been arrested.

Ogun state police spokesperson, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident and also said some persons were “invited”.

Oyeyemi said; “We heard about it. The case is under investigation. The kidnappers came to rent an apartment in that building. They recently packed into that place and other occupants of the house never knew that they had a game plan.

“Since they came into the house, they started playing with all these children, showing signs of a good neighbour. The parents relaxed thinking that are good people, not until they ran away with about three kids from that place.”

Nigerian government committed to lifting poor, vulnerable citizens out of poverty level - President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has given an assurance that his administration is committed to lifting the poor and vulnerable Nigerians out of the poverty level.

According to him, the poor and vulnerable in Nigeria remain top priority for protection and lifting from the poverty cycle, noting that social safety nets will be further sustained, while access to education and opportunities will be expanded.

Speaking in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital Friday, at the virtual official presentation of the Country Review Report of Nigeria to the 31st Africa Peer Review Forum of the African Union, President Buhari said the government will also take advantage of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) to ensure inclusiveness, access and create more opportunities.

“Your Excellencies, Nigeria’s strategic focus, as we set out to achieve the objectives of the African Union Agenda 2063, has been around the following: Building a thriving and sustainable economy; enhancing social inclusion and alleviating poverty; enlarging agricultural output for food security and sufficiency; attaining energy sufficiency in power and petroleum products.

“Expanding transport and other infrastructural development, business growth, entrepreneurship and industrialization; access to quality education, affordable healthcare and productivity, social cohesion and security; and building a system that fights corruption and improve governance.

“Nigeria remains resolutely committed to achieving these set goals despite the challenges that the report highlighted, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remains committed to providing social safety nets for the poor and most vulnerable in our society, while also taking advantage of the huge opportunities offered by the information and technology sector,’’ he said.

The president reiterated that Nigeria had remained a committed and dedicated member of the African Peer Review family, after acceding to the mechanism in 2003.

“Today, the forum has presented its second peer review report on Nigeria. This Second Peer Review of Nigeria came at a critical time in the history of the country. From the report just presented, there is no doubt that the exercise was far-reaching, as it touched the various segments of Nigeria’s political economy and highlighted the progress recorded since the first peer review.

“The report also highlighted some challenges and as a country, we are prepared to review those challenges in the context of our internal dynamics in Nigeria, ultimately with the determination of achieving Agenda 2063 goals of the African Union,’’ he added.

According to him, Nigeria remains grateful to be at the esteemed Forum of the Heads of State and Government, which provides a unique opportunity to present the Country Review Reports of some countries, including the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He said: “Let me use this opportunity to commend the President of South Africa for his dedication to the Forum since his election as the Chairperson of the African Peer Review Forum.

“I also recognize the distinguished Panel of Eminent Persons for their continued good work in steering the African Peer Review Mechanism process in all member countries. I recognize specifically, Dr. Abdoulie Janneh, who led the Review Mission to Nigeria.”

President Buhari congratulated the other three countries (Namibia, Niger and South Africa) that had been reviewed alongside Nigeria, commending the boldness and courage to present their countries for the comprehensive exercise.

The Nigerian leader called on other member states to join and present themselves for review as well.

“There are so many lessons that we can all learn together. It is from learning these lessons and recommitting ourselves as a continent that we all can contribute to our collective efforts to achieve the objectives of the ‘Africa We Want’,” he further said.
