Replace Shettima with Christian, APC youths tell Tinubu

Protests against the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress thickened on Friday with over 200 youths and supporters from the North-Central zone demanding a reversal of the decision.

They called on the presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to drop a former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, as his running mate.

The demonstrators, under the aegis of the North Central Progressives Youths, began the protest at the Unity Fountain and it culminated at the Presidential Villa.

While chanting solidarity songs, the youth from the six North-Central states and the Federal Capital Territory held banners with inscriptions such as, ‘APC presidential ticket must be for all faith’, ‘Shettima must go now, all Christians say no to Islamisation of APC presidential ticket’, ‘Tinubu and Shettima must do the needful, it is our constitutional right’, and ‘Don’t destroy the unity of Nigeria’, among others.

The President of the NCPY, Musa Attah, who described Tinubu as a “man loved and adored by Nigerians,” added that his only obstacle to getting victory in the 2023 presidential election would be his running mate.

He called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to prevail on Tinubu to replace Shettima with a Christian for the good of the party and Nigeria.

According to him, since the President has etched his name in history due to achievements in infrastructure, anti-corruption and good governance, Buhari must protect his legacies by working towards a worthy successor who can consolidate his gains.

Attah said, “Mr President, on numerous occasions you have promised to bequeath a democratic system imbued with workable institutional structures that will stand the test of time. True to your word, the nation’s electoral system has been revolutionised.

“Your footprints will never be forgotten in the area of infrastructure. The fact that there’s still a country called Nigeria is due to your resilience despite the mirage of security challenges. We are also coping with the global economic crisis. Meanwhile, the trial of the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation and many others has proven your zero tolerance for corruption. There are no sacred cows.”

Why Implementation Of Civil Servants' Salaries Is Slow – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja said the public service remains the engine room of government, and should attract the “best and brightest’’ that will fuel policies with fresh ideas, while assuring that the Orosanye White Paper Report will be implemented after review.

“I have directed that the Orosanye White Paper Report be subjected to immediate review to enable Government take the most appropriate decision on its general recommendation,’’ the President in a statement by his media aide, Femi Adesina, told the Central Working Committee of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) at the State House during a courtesy call on the President.

“I am aware that the review is about to be completed. While some may complain about the length of time it has taken thus far, the outcome of the various review teams would lead to some fundamental changes in the structure of our Civil Service and as such it must be subjected to rigorous review and scrutiny before presentation and implementation,’’ he added.

The President said that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will submit the harmonised White Paper once it has been concluded.

He assured that the administration remains focused on strengthening the service and ensuring it helps the government fulfill its objectives.

The President noted that the government understands the role of the Civil Service in policy formulation and implementation towards the provision of socio-economic and political benefits to our citizens.

“This administration remains focused on strengthening the service and ensuring it helps the government fulfill its objectives. The Civil Service must not be seen as a dumping ground for job seekers, but must attract the best and the brightest who will contribute fresh ideas and a determination to solving our socio-economic problems,’’ the President added.

President Buhari appreciated civil servants for their role in realising targets of the administration.

“The role and importance of the Civil Service cannot be over emphasized. A strong Civil Service is the bedrock on which good governance, policy execution and pathways for the delivery of democratic dividends can be achieved.

“I am further delighted to note your acknowledgement of the giant strides this administration has made since its inception in repositioning the Federal Civil Service for greater productivity and enhanced performance. I take note of the various milestone achievements you have listed which symbolizes our commitment to the Civil Service in spite of the many challenges that we encountered from the beginning of this journey,’’ he said.

On request for salary review for civil servants by the committee, the President acknowledged the urgent need for a general salary review in the Federal Public Service due to worldwide problems of high inflation amidst general economic disruption.

“However, I wish to urge you to appreciate the revenue constraints being presently faced by Government which is caused mainly by the activities of unscrupulous citizens through the theft of our crude oil, a major contributor to our revenue base.

“This is compounded by global economic downturn as a result of the on-going Russian – Ukrainian war, which has led to price increases not just in the costs of goods and services globally, but also in the transportation of these goods and services across the globe.

“You are also aware of the enormous burden placed on our finances by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Furthermore, let me note the significant investment we have had to make in security over the last seven years, which means other sectors of the economy have not been able to receive as much funding as we would have liked. Only when our country is secured, that we are able to proceed and take on other aspects of our economic challenges,’’ he added.

President Buhari explained that investment in security assets had been at a huge cost, after several decades of negligence.

“However, my confidence in the Nigerian Armed forces is unshaken, and I have tasked the Chief of Defense Staff and his service chiefs to take the war to these criminals who have made life difficult for many Nigerians.

“Recent reports have shown the message is now being heard and the dividends of our seven years of investments are now maturing. I implore our forces to continue with the current effort and determination until we rid our land of these miscreants.

“I also wish to reiterate that we will not allow a few criminals to have unfettered access to the nation’s crude oil supply hence I have directed our security agencies to speedily bring to a halt the activities of these vandals in the Niger Delta,’’ the President noted.

He said that criminal activities on seas, where large vessels seek to hide in neighboring countries will be checked, stressing that “there should be no hiding place for such criminals, and our cooperation with neighboring countries in halting these crimes is being strengthened and tightened.’’

President Buhari told the Central Working Committee of ASCSN that request for restoration of the payment of gratuity to public service employees was one of the landmark provisions addressed in the 2004 Pension Reform Act.

“Therefore, implementing your request for the payment of a bulk sum of gratuity to retired civil servants would negate the intent and provisions of the Act.

“It should be acknowledged that a change in the implementation of the Act would require an amendment by the National Assembly. But more importantly, the Pension Reform Act is a better designed and robust system that allows for safety of pensioners funds and its payment.’’

On the harmonization of salary in the Public Service, the President said a Committee was set up for that purpose, under the Minister of Finance which was still working.

According to President Buhari:

“A report is being expected, to be submitted at the conclusion of its assignment, which would be studied for appropriate action.’’

The President said the Head of Service of the Federation had been directed to liaise with other relevant government agencies to see how the 2023 budget estimates can accommodate an increase in the budget of Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.

“Let me thank you once more for this visit and to reassure you that this administration would not tolerate any policy that would destabilize the service. I therefore implore you to always acknowledge your very important role as the engine room of government no matter the political party that is in power. This is the main reason why you must remain non-partisan in the discharge of your duties,’’ he said.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, said members of ASCSN had been supportive in actualizing programmes and policies of the administration, describing the leadership as mostly public servants that were vast in civil service procedure, “so when you negotiate with them it is easy and when you make the right point they know.’’

In his remarks, the President of ASCSN, Dr Tommy Okon, noted that the administration had been “worker- friendly’’ with implementation of far reaching reforms, which include regular payment of salaries and allowances, increase in minimum wage, extension of retirement age for some workers, like teachers, and sustenance of the size of public service in spite of constraints of financing.

Okon called for an increase in salaries of civil servants, following increasing cost of living, restoring full payment of gratuity at retirement, harmonization of public service salaries and allowances, and increase in the budget of the National Housing Fund.

He said the increasing cost of living had made it difficult for many public servants to carry on in spite of the minimum wage review, advising that benefits of all public servants should also be harmonized for fairness.

“There should be equal pay for jobs of equal value,’’ he added.

The President of ASCSN commended President Buhari for ensuring access and inclusivity in governance, noting that it was the first time the Association was meeting with a President of the country.

Manchester United confirm £59.5m agreement to sign Casemiro

Manchester United have announced an agreement is in place to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid, subject to personal terms, a medical and UK visa requirement.

United are set to pay €60m (£51m) plus up to a further €10m in add-ons for the five-time Champions League winner. And while there is no formal agreement on personal terms, a four-year contract worth up to £400,000 per week - including bonuses - has been hammered out in principle.

Casemiro's eagerness for a new challenge after nearly a decade in Madrid has been a factor in the move, which has materialised quickly this week.

Despite Real coach Carlo Ancelotti respecting the player's wishes, he did question why Casemiro has chosen to leave the Bernabeu and move to a United side currently struggling.

“I can't answer as to why Casemiro would trade the European champions for a struggling side, it's his personal decision," Ancelotti said.

United have been crying out for a new central midfielder in recent months, having targeting both Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot during the summer transfer window. The pursuit of Rabiot collapsed over the player's wage demands, while De Jong remains a target.

On top of two midfielders, of which Casemiro is one, United boss Erik ten Hag is still targeting a striker, winger and right-back before the end of the summer window.

Olusegun Obasanjo laments over high cost of diesel, forex rate

A former Nigerian president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has said the high cost of diesel as well as the exchange rate in the country is adversely affecting his fish business.

Obasanjo, who owns a fish farm, spoke Tuesday at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State during a Congress of the South-west Fish Farmers Price Sustainability Group.

Obasanjo noted that the rise in cost of diesel as well as constant increase in prices of fish feeds will eventually run Nigerian fish farmers out of business.

He advised the farmers to agree on sustainable prices that could be adopted to keep them in business.

“The current price of diesel at 800 (naira) per litre, production of a kilogramme of fish is ₦1,400. In order to make very marginal profit, the farmers can’t sell less than ₦1,500 as anything short of that amounts to outright loss,” said the former president.

He further said farmers can no longer be producing at the mercy of the buyers who would come around to buy the fish for whatever amount that suits them without taking into consideration the effect of the current economic prices on the production of such fishes.

“The price of diesel has gone high because the management of this country is not what it should be,” he said.

“And it is as simple as that. Then, what will happen is that, particularly those of us who have to use a bit of diesel in producing fish, we will completely go bankrupt, and when that happens, Nigerians will still have to eat fish.

“Fish production will be out of reach and then, people will be producing fish outside Nigeria and be dumping it here. And you will go jobless, poor and indigent. So, what do we have to do? To come together…we want to sustain fish production and we must be able to take care of those who are going to eat and those of us who are producing.”

He also asked the farmers, “How many of you are using diesel in your production? Because I use diesel and I’m already sweating. I’m already sweating.”

The President of the group, Amoo Tunbosun, stressed that the country currently consumes around 3.6 million metric tonnes of fish annually but only produces 1.12 million tonnes, leaving a balance of 2.6 millions tonnes to be imported.

“This is the essence of this gathering, we find out that we have to take our destiny in our hands, we can’t continue to produce and be at the mercy of the buyers, we feel we need to come around and do something for ourselves. We are starting with South-west and in a matter of time it will be all over the country.”

The convener of the congress, Steve Okeleji, said the fish farmers have decided to come together to rescue the industry.

“If everything were to be right with our economy, this congress wouldn’t have been necessary.

“So, the farmers must be heard. We are also virtually key players in the industry. In fact, we play an important role across the value chain of the industry. But the major challenge we have over time is that we are not able to speak with one voice.”

I believe in an indivisible Nigeria - Peter Obi

Nigeria’s foremost Presidential flag bearer and Labour Party candidate for the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, on Monday maintained his belief in an indivisible Nigeria.

Obi expressed confidence that Nigeria can and will come out of her current challenges of failed political leadership.

Obi, in a virtual interactive session with more than 1,000 members of the ‘Peter Obi Support Network’, also urged everyone, especially those in the diaspora, to contribute to Nigeria’s development in whatever capacity they could.

In a statement signed by the Director, Strategic Communication, Peter Obi Support Network, Onwuasoanya Jones, Obi disclosed that he was ready to sacrifice for Nigeria’s survival and progress.

The former Anambra State governor whose Presidential ambition has witnessed growing acceptance across the country since he declared his intention to contest the poll, said, that he had to relocate from the United Kingdom to Nigeria after spending over 10 years to contribute his quota to Nigeria’s economic and social development.

He added that even though he has everything he needs to obtain resident permits and citizenship rights in any part of the world he wishes, he avoided taking resident permits from any other country of the world because he believes that Nigeria is the “only country I have.”

He further commended the efforts of the Diaspora in developing the country and urged them not to relent, insisting that no matter how comfortable they get in another country, Nigeria will always be their home.

“I love Nigeria irrevocably, and I believe no matter how far we travel or how successful we become outside Nigeria, we can never have another country to call our own but Nigeria. This is why I have continued to do whatever I can within my personal and group capabilities to support Nigeria’s march to greatness.

“When I left the UK after residing there for over 10 years, I returned everything that belonged to them. I have a singular focus on Nigeria, and I do not think I need the citizenship or residence rights of any other country when I haven’t finished exploiting my nature-given rights and privileges as a Nigerian.

“If I am out of Nigeria today and there is a war in Nigeria, I will find a way to return to Nigeria because I will rather die in my country, Nigeria, than live free in another man’s country,” the LP Presidential Candidate asserted.
