Adams Oshiomhole: PDP ‘not an option’ in 2019 presidential election

Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed optimism that his party will win the 2019 presidential election convincingly.

Oshiomhole, who spoke on Thursday with State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not an option.

According to him, Nigerians are not ready to vote for PDP again.

“PDP is just not an option; particularly when their candidate is not a new face; there is no basis for benefit of the doubt.

“You can give benefit of the doubt to a stranger not to someone who was at the heart; perhaps one of most powerful vice presidents we have ever had.

“So, I am clear that Nigerians will not have any basis to give PDP the benefit of the doubt.”

He said that PDP wanted to be in power for 60 years but were driven out after 16 years.

According to him, no employer will recall an employee whose job was terminated due to gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The APC national chairman recalled that Uche Secondus, PDP National Chairman, apologised to Nigerians but Nigerians did not accept the apology.

” I have not heard anybody say they have accepted the apology. People that have robbed you; they don’t apologise and say allow me back to your store room; you don’t do that.

“We are certain that even as we cannot talk of any perfect situation, nothing can make Nigerians get so confused as to think that those who mismanaged yesterday and those who were at the heart of that mismanagement can be entrusted with providing leadership for tomorrow.

“I do not think that is a question at all. PDP is out of this calculation as far as I am concerned.”

He said that all was set for the inauguration of the party’s campaign on Friday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in the South South region.

According to him, it will the president’s first rally taking place in the South South which is very significant.

Oshiomhole said that from all the feelers on ground, the people of Uyo and Akwa Ibom State in general are anxious to receive Mr President and to hear his message.

“We are all in good mood,” he said.

Why Buhari must intervene in Deji Adeyanju’s trial – Saraki

Nigerian Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has said that the arrest and detention of activist, Deji Adeyanju, has presented Nigeria’s “democracy in bad light” and a recession to “the period of military rule”

“The way the matter has been handled and the last decision of the Magistrate Court to remand the young man in prison till after the conclusion of the 2019 Polls has presented our democracy in bad light,” Saraki said.

“We are now looking like a country that has receded to the period of military rule,” he added.

Saraki’s comments came few days after a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kano remanded political activist, Deji Adeyanju, in prison until February next year, after taking his plea and concluding that it lacked jurisdiction to hear murder charges against him.

Adeyanju was arrested by the Police on December 13 and accused him of being complicit in a murder case from the 2000s. After a review of the case, Adeyanju was discharged and acquitted of the said offence by the Kano State High Court, following a lengthy trial that lasted between 2005 and 2009.

The Police in Abuja held Adeyanju in detention without charges for five days before moving him to Kano earlier this week and arraigned him on December 19 before Justice Hassan Fagge, who ordered his remand and scheduled yesterday for a bail hearing.

But Saraki maintained that president Muhammadu Buhari needed to intervene to find out whether the current travail of Adeyanju has anything to do with his frequently expressed viewpoints against the Federal Government.

He also urged the president to note that “prior to the coming to office of this government, those of us in opposition, the APC, freely criticized the Goodluck Jonathan government and flayed their actions and statements without any attempt by the administration to stifle opposing views.”

The senate president, therefore, advised the President should “not allow the excesses and over-zealousness of some security agents to give his government a bad name.”

It is obvious that this case is purely political and not about any judicial action. I also call on all human rights protection groups to wade into this matter and ensure we do not watch helplessly as the rights of a citizen are being trampled upon,” Saraki said.

President Buhari challenges wife Aisha to prove cabal influence

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged his wife, Aisha, to prove the existence of a cabal that she claimed is in control of his administration.

The president’s wife had in an interview with the BBC in 2016 threatened to withdraw support for her husband if he chose to seek re-election unless he shakes up his cabinet and includes more people who worked for his success in 2015.

Mrs Buhari said although the victory of the APC in 2015 ”was a collective effort of millions of people” she said ”only for us to find out that the government is being operated by a few people”.

While addressing a gathering of APC women in Abuja recently, Mrs Buhari accused Nigerians of allowing two or three unnamed persons to “cage” her husband, thereby limiting his ability to perform.

Mrs Buhari, known for her intermittent fiery public rebuke of her husband, said although over 15 million Nigerians voted for Mr Buhari in 2015, “only two or three persons have since taken control of the government”.

She did not name the individuals or elaborate on her claims.

The president responded to his wife in an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America shared on Tuesday.

Reminded that his wife and others have consistently claimed the existence of a cabal running his government, Mr Buhari simply said: ”that is her business”.

He went ahead to say the fact that people including his wife make such claims proves his democratic credentials.

”It means everyone is free to say whatever they like. Irrespective of whatever they say they should come out with proof of what the cabal has forced me to do.”

Corruption has become official in Nigeria under Muhammadu Buhari - Atiku

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said he was taken aback last week when Mr. Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, turned up at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, December 13, 2018, where he was received with pomp and pageantry.

Accoridng to Atiku, Babachir Lawal attended the launch of the Together Nigeria organized by the Buhari Support Organization (BSO).

In a statement by Atiku, the PDP presidential candidate at the 2019 election said: “It is a very sad day for Nigeria, when the President honours a man proven beyond all reasonable doubt to have soiled his hands with money meant for starving refugees.

“These are the actions which feed the perceptions that has made Nigeria turn in its worst ever Corruption Perception Index rating by Transparency International where we went back 12 steps in 2018’s rankings, moving from 136 under President Jonathan to 148 today.

“According to Transparency International, Nigeria is more corrupt today and we ask the government to answer a few questions including:

1. Who reinstated and double promoted Maina?

2. Who owns the Ikoyi Apartment $42 million?

3. What has happened to Aisha Buhari’s ADC who looted ₦2.5 billion?

4. Why was the $25 billion NNPC contracts awarded without due process investigated?

5. Why haven’t those beyond Buhari’s padded budget scandals been sacked or charged to court?

6. When will Babachir be charged?

7. How come fuel subsidy has doubled even when petrol price has doubled?

8. Why did President Buhari lift the suspension of the corrupt NHIS boss, Usman Yusuf, before public pressure forced him to suspend him? Why has he not been charged?

9. In May, Transparency International warned that Buhari had increased Security Vote by 600%, yet our soldiers have no weapons and are killed by terrorists. Where is the money going?

10. In February Buhari withdrew $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account to ostensibly fund the war on terror, yet the Chief of Army Staff said after Metele that they have no weapons. Where did that money go?

“Answers to these and other questions are urgently required from President Buhari by Nigerians and failure to answer them only proves that under Buhari, the All Progressive Congress Government is not just Corrupt, but corruption is its policy.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Adds Another Record to his Name

Footballing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has created and broke a number of records in his illustrious career so far, with the 33-year-old almost setting a new one every time he sets foot on the pitch.

Ronaldo finds himself in the history books once again as he scored Juventus' 5000th goal in the Serie A, making the Bianconeri the first club in Italy's top flight to reach the mark. The Portugese star scored via a penalty in the 70th minute to help them beat Torino in the Derby della Mole.

Juve's 1000th goal came way back in 1948 courtesy of Carlo Parola while Gianni Rossi netted their 2000th goal in 1962. 19-years later Massimo Briaschi scored number 3,000 with former Italy striker Marco Di Vaio scoring their 4000th goal in 2003.
With his strike Ronaldo finds himself in the history books for Juventus, as their win on the night was their eighth in succession away from home, equalling their longest winning run on the road in the top flight.

Juventus are still unbeaten in the Serie A and have now secured 46 points from 16 games, 11 points ahead of second placed Napoli who have played a game lesser. They will next be seen in action on Saturday, the 22nd of December when they host AS Roma in the Serie A.

Group scores Yemi Osinbajo higher in vice presidential debate than Peter Obi, others

A political group in Nigeria says Vice President Yemi Osinbajo showed the gulf in class between him and other Vice Presidential candidates as he blew his compatriots away with his insight on constitutional, economic, security and social development issues.

The Initiative to Save Democracy (ISD) explained that Osinbajo who is seeking reelection in office alongside incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, riveted his class as the best Vice President in Nigeria’s history.

President of the group, Sunday James Akinloye said Osinbajo, a proficient orator and inarguably Nigeria’s favourite Vice President proved that he was no fluke as he displayed his dexterity, aura and finesse at the Vice Presidential debate which held at the Transcorp Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on 14 December 2018.

The debate organized by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG) and Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) had four other Vice Presidential candidates in attendance, Peter Obi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ganiyu Galadima of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN); Khadija Abdullahi-Iya of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) and Umma Getso of Young Progressive Party (YPP).

“Stating categorically how the ruling government will take Nigerians to the next level when re-elected, Osinbajo noted that the government will continue to build on infrastructure and human capital development,” the group said in a statement.

ISD explained that Osinbajo used verifiable facts to buttress his points compared to other candidates. “What we intend to do is to build on what we are doing and that is why we are talking of the Next Level. We have moved 24 places up on the Ease of Doing Business,” the Vice President said at the debate.

“We need to improve power transmission, we need to improve our rail and road infrastructure to boost our economy, the Vice President explained.

The group stated that the VP also took on the topic of direct foreign investment. “Foreign Investment will come when we create an environment for local industries. We are also looking at the taxation regime and will continue to ensure that small and medium businesses continue to thrive,” Akinloye said quoting Osinbajo.

“The Vice President drew the biggest cheer of the debate when he replied Peter Obi, the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP insinuated that the ruling All Progressives Congress had left its shop and was chasing thieves.

In response, Prof Osinbajo said, “If you allow criminals to steal all the inventories in the shop, there will be no shop. That’s the problem and the World Bank said that corruption is the major impediment to Nigeria’s development.

Speaking on power, Osinbajo said, “I think the common denominator between the two countries you mentioned is the strong infrastructure,” the VP said referring to the mention of China and South Africa, adding that, while under President Buhari, power generation capacity has climbed to over 7,000 megawatts.

Akinloye said Prof Osinbajo explained that Nigeria in the past 16 years has suffered a major infrastructure deficit. “So, we don’t have rails, roads. When we came into power in 2015, power was 4,000MW in 16 years,” the incumbent Vice President said.

“So, you need strong infrastructure. No one can argue about it. The second thing is you cannot have a strong economy if you allow the type of grand corruption that has taken place in Nigeria in the last 16 years,” Osinbajo added.

Akinloye noted that the Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP was observed by many, especially on social media, to have been economical with some of the data he churned out.

Citing instances, Akinloye said he had claimed that Nigeria had over 2 million cars, however checks from data released by the National Bureau of Statistics show that in the third quarter of 2017 alone, there were over 11.5 Million cars in the country.

Immediately, social media users took on this issue and have made posts calling out the Vice Presidential Candidate.

After the two hour, 30 minutes debate, the Vice Presidential candidates were awarded certificates of participation after which they took a group photograph.

Marcelo Admits Real Madrid Miss 'Best in the World' Cristiano Ronaldo

Real Madrid vice-captain Marcelo has admitted that Los Blancos miss Cristiano Ronaldo but also claims that feeling the Portuguese superstar's absence is only natural after all these years.

After spending the last nine seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu winning every possible trophy, Ronaldo left Real in favour of Serie A outfit Juventus in the summer transfer window.

It wasn't long before they felt his absence, succumbing to a series of disappointing results under former coach Julen Lopetegui. Santiago Solari's appointment has seen Madrid make something of a recovery, although they are still five points behind defending champions Barcelona.

The forward, on the other hand, has settled in effortlessly with the Bianconeri, scoring 10 goals in 15 league appearances.

Marcelo admits that the three-time reigning Champions League winners miss their record goalscorer, but feels it's only natural given his stature and contribution.

"He is a player who as well as being my team-mate is my friend, as he is with Sergio [Ramos] and Luka [Modric]," the Brazilian told Club del Deportista, as quoted by FourFourTwo.

"It's obvious that when the best player in the world isn't in your team you're going to miss him. But I don't want to say that we don't have the best players in the world in every position."

"Any team would like to have Cristiano with them, but Madrid will continue to be Madrid despite players coming and going," the left-back concluded.

Salah retains BBC African Footballer of the Year award

Liverpool and Egypt striker Mohamed Salah has capped a sparkling 2018 for club and country by winning the prestigious BBC African Footballer of the Year Award for the second time in a row.

"It's a great feeling to win again. I'm happy and I would like to win it also next year!" said Salah.

The 26-year-old, who beat Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane and Thomas Partey to the award, is just the second player after Jay-Jay Okocha to win it two years running.

Yaya Toure is the only other player to have twice won the award in its current form while Nwankwo Kanu won it twice when it was a broader African Sports Personality award.

Liverpool's star forward Mohamed Salah has won the Premier League Golden Boot with 32 goals in 36 appearances. We take a look at how close the race was between the top five.

Salah scored 44 goals in 52 games for Liverpool last season, his first on Merseyside after joining them from Roma, and helped them to reach the Champions League final.

His club form has continued this season with his winner against Napoli on Tuesday that saw the Reds into the Champions League last 16 taking his tally to 13.

"There have been many good moments in 2018," he added.

"I'm scoring goals and helping the team to get the points to be top of the league. That's always a great feeling."

Salah also scored twice for Egypt at the World Cup in Russia.

Earlier in 2018, Salah won the English double - the Players' Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Player of the Year.

Salah also won the 2017 CAF Player of the Year and is one of 10 nominees for the 2018 award which will be announced in January.

Police: Having sex in a car in public not a crime

Nigeria Police on Monday said that having sex in a car at a public place is not a crime and would not amount to arrest if done by persons within adult age in the country.

Police spokesman Abayomi Shogunle made the disclosure while responding to a question by a Nigerian Twitter user.

Chelsea end Man City's unbeaten run with win

Chelsea inflicted champions Manchester City's first Premier League defeat of the season as goals from N'Golo Kante and David Luiz handed the hosts a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge and sent Liverpool top of the table.

Kante's goal just before half-time came against the run of play as the visitors dominated the first 45 minutes, but without the injured Sergio Aguero, City lacked a cutting edge up front and Luiz's header 12 minutes from time sealed a huge win for Chelsea.

Liverpool are now a point clear of City after Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 victory at Bournemouth earlier on Saturday.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri had lost all of his previous three meetings against City boss Pep Guardiola and was growingly increasingly frustrated at his side's inability to hold possession as the visitors dominated the first half.

Raheem Sterling should have scored when his weak left-footed finish was placed too close to Kepa Arrizabalaga before the world's most expensive goalkeeper also denied Leroy Sane from a narrow angle.

Only a brave block by captain Cesar Azpilicueta rescued Chelsea when City next threatened as Sterling eased past Marcos Alonso and Sane's fierce effort was deflected over by the Spanish defender.

Yet, for all City's possession, the visitors were stung by a sucker punch just before half-time as Sarri's decision to field Eden Hazard as the focal point of the Chelsea attack and maintain Kante in an advanced midfield role paid off.

Sarri has resisted calls to return Kante to the deep-lying midfield role where he shone in winning the World Cup with France and Premier League titles for Leicester and Chelsea at the expense of Jorginho.

Hazard was finally fed the ball to feet inside the City box and his pass picked out Kante, who side-footed the ball high past Ederson.

The Brazilian goalkeeper had been a spectator before picking the ball out his net, but was called into action again to keep his side in the game just after the break when he palmed away Willian's free-kick.

Willian wasted another good chance on the counter-attack as having been behind only once before in the Premier League this season, City were rattled and rarely threatened to get back in the game in the second period.

Guardiola's men may also have to cope without David Silva for some of the festive season after the Spaniard hobbled off holding his hamstring.

Defending set-pieces has often been a rare Achilles heel for City and it was exposed when Luiz made the game safe by rising highest to Hazard's corner and looping a header in off the underside of the bar.

13 Secrets to Being Super Successful

Super successful people understand that there are traits, behaviors, and actions they must take in order to succeed.

Their thinking is, "I will do what it takes to get to where I want to go" They know success doesn't come to them. They have to go out and get it for themselves.

Here are 13 ways super successful people manage to be so successful.

1. Super successful people are always prepared.

Prepare for opportunities by creating a comprehensive strategic plan incorporating your vision, values, and goals. This means a strong understanding of the new knowledge environment. To multiply the options available to you and make the most of them, keep learning and becoming better at what you do every day.

2. Super successful people speak their mind.

Be consistently candid and honest. Make it a point to speak what's on your mind without fear of judgment. By speaking the truth and being honest, you can support your words with actions that will help you pursue your success. Simply thinking for yourself can make you unforgettable.

3. Super successful people honor their values.

Formulate your own code of conduct based on your most important values, and make sure your conduct is grounded in it. If you value excellence, make everything you do excellent; if it's teamwork, make everything about doing things together.

4. Super successful people harness their mental toughness.

Everyone faces challenges and obstacles. Whatever yours look like, overcome them with hard work, resilience, and tenacity. Surround yourself with good people who can see things from a different perspective and shed light on the darkest of situations. Finally, walk through your fears to make yourself mentally tough. When you do, you will begin to attract more opportunities and be known as someone who can take the heat.

5. Super successful people embody their self-assurance.

Be confident in yourself without requiring constant input or feedback from others. Instead, develop the ability to get work done independently without any hand-holding as a path to confidence in your own capabilities and competence. Lead with confidence but ask for help when you need it.

6. Super successful people manage their stress.

There will always be something that goes wrong, something that causes stress, something that isn't working, something that's upsetting. Learning the stress management techniques that work for you will not only make you successful but help you become a positive example to others.

7. Super successful people are constantly pushing past their status quo.

The difference between someone who's highly successful and someone who's simply in a position of authority is easy to spot -- the highly successful person will continue to work on improving his or her skills. After a certain amount of success, the temptation to maintain the status quo is great, but a commitment to always keep growing, learning, and evolving will always pay off.

8. Super successful people successfully maintain their discipline.

The key to a disciplined life is identifying the most important things to you and establishing barriers to protect those things. There will always be people, opportunities, ideas, and distractions coming at you all at once, but by being disciplined and purposeful, you can be open and still stay in control. Knowing what to say yes to and what to turn down can be the difference between success and failure.

9. Super successful people are always challenging themselves.

It's a wonderful thing when you can find a new way to express a concept -- to see with fresh eyes and communicate the things most people overlook. Work every day to find new perspectives on challenging ideas and new ways to convey them that bring others on board.

10. Super successful people know how to embrace their discomfort.

Learn to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Many people start out with great intentions but are unable to move forward because they fear rejection, failure, or a bruised ego. Find ways to identify and process your fear, leave your comfort zone, and embrace the things that challenge you.

11. Super successful people are exemplary conductors of their lives.

Most successful people are adept at planning, coordination, and collaborating -- and they got there by building habits of organizing, arranging, systemizing, and scheduling to make things happen. You can start today to do the same, become a conductor, bring together different elements seamlessly and effectively. This will be the hallmark of your success.

12. Super successful people are consistently working on their impact.

Influence is about being able to cajole, encourage, and incentivize people. It's not about elevating yourself but lifting up others. Other forms of power are limited by what you can command or control, but working on your impact allows your ideas to expand far beyond your personal limits.

13. Super successful people are always holding themselves to a higher standard.

More than anything else, high standards are a prerequisite for success. You will always have opportunities to cut corners, do things halfway, and show up halfheartedly, but if you hold yourself and others to a higher standard, you'll be surprised at how much they (and you) can stand out and succeed.

I’m still in APC but Akinlade have my full support —Amosun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State said, yesterday, that God will not forgive him if he had stopped the defection of his preferred governorship candidate, Adekunle Akinlade and other aggrieved candidates from defecting from All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Allied People’s Movement, APM.

This came as 26 APC candidates, who contested for the House of Assembly tickets in Ogun State during the party primary, yesterday, joined APM.

Amosun said he had attempted to stop them from protecting the mandate given to them.

The governor said this while addressing an APC  stakeholders’ meeting  attended by Akinlade, at the Presidential Villa in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He promised to remain in APC to contest the Senate seat and ensure the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Amosun said: “When these people came, they told me they were leaving APC, I said no but I could not stop them. In fact, Akinlade has my full support, I am not going to stop him, everything I have, I will use to support him, let them try whatever they want to try, we also have our strategies and I am not going to hide behind one finger.

“I remain in APC because that’s what those people want, they want us to leave APC but they are joking. I will stay in APC to ensure that Buhari wins in Ogun State and to let them know that they can’t subvert the will of Ogun State.

“Every day, I will campaign for President Muhammdu Buhari, we will do everything possible to ensure Buhari wins massively in Ogun State, but they should not miss it. I, Senator Ibikunle Amosun will not support anyone they are bringing.

“God will punish me if I stop Akinlade. All of you supporting Akinlade, you have my support. They are talking about party supremacy, what happens to party supremacy at the local levels?.”

Lawmakers’ defection

Meanwhile, the defectors, who spoke through their spokesperson, Mr. Lamidi Olatunji, said they took the decision to dump APC for APM after consultations with elders, leaders and members of APC failed.

Olatunji said: “After extensive and due consultations with our elders, members and stakeholders in the APC in Ogun State, we have come to the inevitable conclusion to seek the general mandate of our people in the 2019 elections on the platform of the Allied People’s Movement.

“We regret that Mr. President’s efforts were frustrated by the forces that are bent on returning the South West  to the dark age of slavery where unelected kingpins direct the affairs of the people.

“We are committed to the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari and we are determined to deliver Ogun State to him in the Presidential election, on  February 16, 2019, by the grace of God. Governor Amosun has nothing to do with our decision to defect to APM.”

“It was alleged that some unknown men, four of them, in an unregistered green SUV had brought out a gun and threatened a policeman that if he does not leave the road, they will shoot him,” Imohimi said.

“Believing that they were armed robbers, I sent out my men and fortunately, with the DPO in charge of Shogunle division, they were able to intercept them and the men were arrested and were brought down to the headquarters for interrogation.

Atiku : To win the war on terror we need opportunities and jobs

In order to defeat terror, Nigeria needs a well thought out anti-terror plan and one thing that must be central to that plan is the buy in of the people because terror can only thrive where there is local support. Take that local support structure away and the terror architecture will collapse like a pack of cards.

Terrorists are themselves human beings. Terror groups depend on recruiting from the local communities to replenish their ranks or they cannot grow. The members of Boko Haram are not spirits and while there definitely is some foreign influence, the overwhelming number of their leadership and followers are members of the local population.

Central to our plans for defeating terror therefore must be to find out why young men in those communities are aggrieved enough to be alienated from Nigeria and attracted to the radical philosophy of Boko Haram and ISWAP. When we find out, we must prevent this alienation from occurring.

The key to answering this question is to look at the economy of Nigeria and how that economy is distributed.

Within Nigeria, the heartland of the terror insurgency is the Northeast, with Borno and Yobe states being the hardest hit. Surely, it cannot be a coincidence that the Northeast is also the most economically backward part of Nigeria with Borno and Yobe states worst affected.

Recently, someone called Nigerian youths “lazy”. Rightly, there was an uproar over that indecorous slandering of a whole generation, but that type of mentality exposes the mindset that has led to the alienating of huge swathes of our youth, especially in the Northeast.

When Nigerian youths feel that they are not valued as equal members of society that should have equal access to opportunity, they begin to take matters into their own hands.

When the leadership of a nation fail to provide positive avenues for the youth to assert their intelligence positively, then the youth will find negative uses to express their innate intelligences. Lack of access to education is linked to poverty and poverty is undoubtedly an incubator for crime, terrorism or militancy.

On November 22, 2016, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) revealed that a whopping 70% of children in Kebbi state are not in school. They also revealed that they do not have reliable figures for states such as Borno and Yobe, but the numbers may well be more. Even likely so.

In 2016, my running mate, former Governor Peter Obi, gave an Independence Day speech at The Platform event organised by Covenant Christian Centre in Lagos. It was an unforgettable Independence Day event which, according to Google analytics, was the most searched item in Nigeria on that day, besting even the President’s own speech.

Why was that speech so attractive to Nigerians? It is because Mr. Obi gave a detailed breakdown of the reality of governance in Nigeria today, which is one of a wasteful squandering of the riches that should have gone into the development of our youth.

And he is not alone in noticing this. Youth everywhere and especially in the Northeast are seeing this. The Nigerian government and the Nigerian elite are not offering them a way out of this dilemma. However, anti social groups, like Boko Haram and ISWAP, are exploiting their dissatisfaction with society and are offering our youth a utopian ideal which is in reality a dystopia.

These youth read about highly connected government officials who pilfer ₦200 million that was meant for Internally Displaced Persons, without so much as a slap on the wrists, they hear about suspected mega thieves who are returned by government, reinstated into the civil service, given promotions and armed guards and treated like royalty.

These events only deepen their alienation from society and affirm the twisted messages of groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP.

To defeat terrorism therefore, we need to arm our military and motivate them with good working conditions and terms of services, especially for the lower ranks who face the greatest risks and are the least paid. We need to demonstrate that when you fight for Nigeria, Nigeria will fight for you, but even more importantly, we must show that when you die in the services of Nigeria, your name and your survivors will be celebrated by the society that you died for.

We must also help our military win the hearts and minds of the people of the Northeast by empowering them to open soup kitchens where they give food to the hungry. We must encourage them to set up field hospitals where they treat the local population free of charge. Even something as giving each soldier a pocketful of sweets to handout to little children on the streets will help the military win the love and affection of the local population and turn their allegiance to our armed forces.

That is one part of the plan. The other part of the plan, which is even more important, is that we must starve Boko Haram and ISWAP of their recruiting tool by quickly and effectively restructuring Nigeria so that we have a society that allows for inclusiveness and social justice.

A very good first step is to go back in time to find out why an initially peaceful movement became violent. It all started with the extra judicial murder of their charismatic preacher and founder Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf.

In fact, the current leader of ISWAP, is Mohammed Yusuf’s son, Abu Musab al-Barnawi. It is clear that that act of extrajudicially killing Mohammed Yusuf is one of the grudges that these groups have against the Nigerian state.

We must deprive Boko Haram of the means of claiming injustice as the rationale behind its insurgency by trying all those behind Mohammed Yusuf‘s extra judicial murder.

As Theodore Parker said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice”.

Just as we are satisfying this moral debt, as a nation, we must ensure that there is a fairer redistribution of the wealth of Nigeria amongst all Nigerians. Our budgeting system must be upended and we must have the political will to start spending more on capital expenditures than on recurrent expenditures.

We must curb waste in government by eliminating security votes and those wasteful spendings highlighted by Governor Peter Obi which include, but are not limited to, eliminating huge and expensive convoys, overseas medical treatment at public expense, reducing unnecessary travel and building people instead of building edifices.

We must learn from countries like Rwanda that has stabilised its society by statutorily reserving 30% of all legislative seats for women. As the late Kofi Annan said in 2006, “there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women. No other policy is as likely to raise economic productivity, or to reduce infant and maternal mortality.”

When you empower a woman, you empower a family, a village, a community and eventually, a nation.

In our case, we can go further by reserving at least 35% of all legislative and executive positions for not just women, but also for our youth, at all levels of government, federal, states and local governments. We must convert our youths from onlookers to stakeholders. They must see that it is easier for them to influence the direction of Nigeria by going into government or business than by going into crime or terror.

But above all, we must massively invest in education by building capacity, which must not just be limited to establishing more schools, but by training teachers. In a situation where we do not even have enough teachers, it is a mistake to sack the few that we have because they fail ad hoc examinations. Instead, we must build their capacity to teach via training and continuous development.

It is impossible to have 70% of the children of a state outside the formal school system without having destabilising crime and terrorism such as we are currently having in Nigeria. And it will be a mistake to fight only the symptoms without fighting the cause.

We must accept the wisdom that a provision of equal opportunity and social justice is the panacea to almost all of the ills of society.

By reversing our budgeting ratio from 7-3 in favour of recurrent to 7-3 in favour of capital expenditure, we will create an atmosphere for jobs.

If we are building and rebuilding infrastructure, there will be jobs for our youth. They will have increased purchasing power, which will itself lead to further jobs flowing from the goods and services they patronise. They will keep their monies in banks, which will result in more liquidity with which the banks can then provide loans to more small and medium scale enterprises. The snowball effect is almost limitless.

Again, let me state that we have to make these changes to rescue our nation from the brink. Only last week, the World Bank revealed that in recent years, Nigeria “has underinvested in human capital and remains very low compared to others.”

If we do not address these negative indices, we will continue to totter, while nations that sufficiently invest in their youth make advances that we can only dream of.

These are the only ways we can decisively defeat terror and defeat it we must otherwise anarchy await us.

Atiku Abubakar finally gets US visa after 13 years

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has finally been issued a visa to the United States, according to a report.

A family source disclosed this on Saturday and confirmed that the former vice-president has left Nigeria for the UK, where he will spend some time before flying to the US.

It was gathered that former president Olusegun Obasanjo played a “critical” role in getting the American government to issue the visa to his former deputy with whom he was estranged for almost 15 years.

The trip marks another chapter in the controversy that has rocked the former vice-president for over a decade.

Atiku, who is widely travelled, has not been to the US in 13 years, intially fueling speculations that he might be avoiding possible arrest or prosecution.

His political opponents had used his absence from the US not just to taunt but to discredit him.

His row with the US authorities began after the FBI investigated a bribery scandal involving William Jefferson, former US congressman, in 2004.

Atiku was accused of demanding a bribe of $500,000 to facilitate the award of contracts to two American telecommunication firms in Nigeria.

The FBI had searched his residence in the posh neighbourhood of Potomac, Maryland, but no money was found.

The investigators had videotaped Jefferson, who was the congressman representing Louisiana, receiving $100,000 worth of $100 bills which he claimed was meant for Atiku, but the former vice-president has consistently denied the allegation.

Despite Atiku’s claim to innocence, the controversy raged.

Two months before he declared interest in the 2019 presidential race, Atiku granted an interview to Dele Mommodu, celebrity journalist, where he clarified his absence from the US.

“It is the sole prerogative of America to determine who they want in their country or not,” he said.

“I’m not running away from America. I applied but wasn’t issued a visa.”

He said the US did not categorically deny him visa.

“They’ve only said my application is going through administrative process,” he said.

On Thursday, Lai Mohammed, minister of information, had warned the US to be cautious in granting visa to the main opponent of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Asked to comment on Atiku’s visa status on Friday, Rusell Brooks, spokesman of the US consulate in Lagos, had said issuance of visa to Nigerians irrespective of their status is strictly a confidential matter.

He said the US government would not discuss such confidentiality in public.

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) members had alleged that Brian Ballard, publicist of US President Donald Trump, was working towards relaxing the visa ban on Atiku.

My next four years will be significant - President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised that given opportunity for another four years will be quite significant for the country.

The President has also appealed to politicians to go about the campaigns decently and peacefully, saying that there is no other country for the people apart from Nigeria.

Speaking at the flagging off of his 2019 Presidential campaign tagged, “Next Level, the APC Road Map,” at the Old Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Buhari said the choice Nigerians will make in the elections would help to shape the economy.

According to him, “The next four years will be quite significant for our country. Nigeria is faced with a choice to keep building a new Nigeria-making a break from its tainted past which favoured an opportunistic few.

“Our choices will shape us-our economic security and our future prosperity. Nigeria, more than ever before needs a stable and people-focussed government to move the agenda for our country forward. Join us on this journey to the Next Level of a prosperous, strong and stable Nigeria!”

He said four years ago, we promised Nigerians real change in what we do and how we do it. Nigerians sent a clear message in the last election and our platform offered a new ambitious plan for a secure, prosperous and corruption-free country.

“We have worked hard to fulfill our promises and while the road may have been difficult, over the last three and half years, we have laid the foundations for a strong, stable and prosperous country for the majority of our people.

“Foundational work is not often visible, neither is it glamorous but it is vital to achieving the kind of country we desire. Judging by the prior depth of decay, deterioration and despair that Nigeria had sunken into, we are certain that these past few years have put us in good stead to trudge on the Next Level of building an even and stronger nation for our people.

“First things had to come first. We were a nation at war – but we delivered on our commitment to secure the territorial integrity of our nation in the face of a raging insurgency that devastated many parts of the North East.

“We liberated 17 local government areas from the grip of insurgency. Brokering and sustaining peace in the Niger Delta has also been crucial to stabilising the polity. Despite the difficult circumstances presented by weak oil prices and reduced oil production, we delivered on our commitment to make public investments to spur economic growth, job creation, and broad based prosperity.

“Agriculture continues to expand our economic base, as do our investments in deficient infrastructure across the length and breadth of this nation.

“We implemented a responsible and transparent fiscal plan for the challenging economic times that saw us.”

He said that even as his administration lays the foundation for a stable and prosperous nation, there was still much to do.

He said, “The next level of effort focuses on job creation across sectors. From an enlargement of the N-Power programme to investing in technology and creative sector jobs to agriculture and revolutionising access to credit for entrepreneurs and artisans, there is scope for over 15 million new jobs.

“We believe that our people who are still in poverty have a direct way out and up through our expanded National Social Investment Programme.

“We know that, to succeed, moral integrity and conscience must continue to form the dominant character of our nation and its leadership. Corruption is an existential threat to Nigeria.

“Despite the gains we have made in closing the gates, we know that there is still much ground to cover to stop systemic corruption. We are committed to deepening the work we started this first time such that the nation’s assets and resources continue to be organised and utilised to do good for the majority of our people.

Speaking at the occasion, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha said the gathering offered a unique opportunity to receive first hand the success story of the administration.

He said, “We we came in when Nigerians clamored for change and the rest of the world look up to our nation for direction. We came in when hope was lost. A leader with distinct integrity was needed for our nation. The journey has been tortuous but we have weathered the storm. The administration has given good governance its proper meaning.

“On October 6, I sat all night watching the event in Port Harcourt, I thought we might have a contest.. your re election next year has become more obvious.”

He also said that results of the three House of Representatives bye-elections in three states were eloquent testimony of the achievements of the government.

He said, the winnings yesterday (Saturday), show a pattern that 2019 will take APC won House of Reps seats in Bauchi, Katsina, but the one that is sweetest is the one in Kwara.”
