COVID-19: Broadcast Stations may Close Shop Says BON
The financial burden heaped on the broadcasting industry by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic may result in the closure of a vast number of broadcast operators in Nigeria.
The chairperson of the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON), Hajiya Sa’a Ibrahim, during a media interactive session organized by The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kano state council, said broadcast stations have recorded dwindling revenue generation which has further incapacitated the stations from exercising their financial responsibilities to their employees and regulators.
According to Ibrahim, broadcast media organizations are indebted to their regulators, specifically Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in huge sums, which she said needs to be forgiven, explaining that the monies were regulatory debts that the operators could not upset prior to the outbreak of the pandemic.
She revealed that in the aftermath of several interactions with the minister of information, Lai Mohammed, the federal government has rolled out some relief measures to save the industry, noting that the industry could only be salvaged through total waiver of all their debts and called on the federal government to salvage the situation urgently.
