Nigeria History: 10 Notable Moments in the History of Nigeria

Nigeria is officially known as the Federal Republic of Nigeria and is located in the western part of Africa. One of the most interesting parts of the Nigerian history is the fact that the most populous country in Africa was formed by the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates by Lord Lugard in 1914. This article sheds more light on some of the most memorable events that had transpired in the Nigerian history before and after the country was formed. History and events shape the future of any great nation, so read and discover the memorable incidences that have occurred since the inception of the largest country in Africa.

Notable Facts About Nigerian History
1. The Yoruba and the Kingdom of Nri

Even though the Yoruba was the first major tribal group in the nation, the kingdom of Nri was the first established monarchy in the history of Nigeria. Nri was the originator of the Igbo culture which was a major influential group in the region after its establishment in 948 AD. At this time, the kingdom of Nri was unique because the rulers governed the people through the use of political, economic and religious authority and didn’t need to use force to control their subjects. The Nri was also a safe haven for people who had been ostracized from their communities and for people escaping from slavery.

2. Benin Empire

The Benin Empire began in the 15th century when it was founded by the Edo people who resided in western Africa. Benin was an important empire in the history of Nigeria because it rose to international fame for its artworks which were exported to different parts of Europe and the rest of the world.

The Empire of Benin was a trading one that was highly organized and efficient. Benin was the first Nigerian territory that rivalled any contemporary European power in terms of governance and function. This empire was intact when the British arrived in Benin during the 19th century.

3. The Establishment of Hausa Kingdom

The Islamic Hausa Empire was established by a group of old city states that lay between the Niger River and Lake Chad. The Hausa people were influenced by the Islamic religion and it was also a powerful centre for trade and commerce. The Hausa had considerable influence over many

people within the central Nigerian area. They even posed an economic and cultural challenge to other major empires of that time such as Mali. This empire fell apart in 1808 and when the British arrived in 1880 they helped the Hausa to reclaim the influence and position they lost in the past.

4. British Began to Conquer Nigeria

One of the most notable events in the Nigerian history occurred in 1901 when the British formally made Nigeria a protectorate. The British had first entered into the area during the 1880’s in order to trade with Nigerians. Once the British took over Nigeria they began to dictate the affairs of the territory and enslaved parts of the population. They enforced the colonial rule and ran the country for almost 50 years. The British modernized the country at this point and introduced its society to western influence.

5. Christian Missionaries began Activity in Southern Nigeria

Christian missionaries closely followed the British as they were coming to Nigeria to start off their missionary work. It made the most influence on the religious lives of Nigerians especially those in the southern parts of the nation making this moment a remarkable one in the Nigerian history. At this time, many Nigerians were introduced to the Christian religion which has continued to wax stronger since that time. Religious beliefs among Nigerians have sometimes gone to a matter of life and death resulting in conflicts especially between the Muslims in the North and the Christians in the South.

6. Lord Lugard’s Ruthless Government in Nigeria

Fredrick Lugard was an ex-British soldier who was given the responsibility of running Nigeria in 1912. When Lord Lugard was in charge of the country, he spent half of his time running Nigeria from England. Lugard didn’t like the Nigerians. During his reign, he permitted slavery in some parts of the colony and used the military to keep control.

He is remembered as one of the worst colonial rulers in Nigerian history and this motivated some Nigerian people to begin the process of having their freedom from the British Empire.

7. Nigeria’s Decolonization and Independence

Shortly after World War II was over, many nations within Africa began to want their independence from European powers that colonized most of the continent. The British Empire was the primary colonizer of Africa and nationalism began to grow all throughout the continent. Many Nigerians were fed up with the British and had been indirectly seeking to be free from them for years. Eventually,

Nigerian nationals were able to have their independence in 1960 aided by the fact that Britain was a beaten and devastated nation that could no longer hold onto their overseas territories.

8. Nigeria’s First Republic

In the year 1963, all of the British power had pulled out of the country and the nation was finally free to govern its own affairs. Even though the British no longer remained in power they still had considerable influence on the society and culture of Nigeria. English still remains a part of this country and many British people still conduct business and live in the nation.

9. The First National Elections

Shortly after Nigeria gained its independence, the country held its first national elections which were done to establish the country’s first independent government. The elections took place in the month of December 1964.

10. Transition of Power

The year 2007 was a notable one in Nigerian history as the year marks the first time that ruling government parties had a peaceful transition of power since Nigeria became a peaceful state. Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua took control of the government from Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who ruled the nation for 8 years.

Top 10 Interesting Facts About Nigeria’s Independence

Many stories have been told about Nigeria and the road towards indTyependence on October 1, 1960. It is a day that will continue to be remembered in the annals of Africa’s history. In this piece I will be bring you interesting facts about the independence of Africa’s giant nation, Nigeria.

High Hopes And Expectations

When Nigeria gained independence from the UK in 1960 there were high hopes and expectations that we were on our way to self-government. We had abundant mineral resources and also the most educated workforce in Africa. It was expected by Nigeria would become Africa’s first superpower and a stabilizing democratic influence in the region.

Style Of Governance

Let me point out that on October 1, 1960, the army office commanding the army guards at the midnight flag raising ceremony was Captain David Ejoor and went on to play a major role in the military interventions that followed later. After the independence, Nigeria tried to adopt the UK-style of government; Westminster-style parliamentary democracy. This was where the similarities ended because in as much as the UK-style focused on debates and party maneuvering, the Nigerian-style was fragmented along regional and ethnic lines.

The Question Of Unity

The Nigerian unity question did not start today or it is just cropping up because some groups are feeling marginalized along the line. At independence, what we had was a herding together of over 250 ethnic groups by the UK without seeking for the people’s consent or anything close to a referendum. Major political players had something to say about this; showing a lack of confidence in them on Nigeria actually being a nation. To the Sardauna, Sir Ahmadu Bello he called it “the mistake of 1914” (the year of amalgamation of Northern and Southern protectorate). During of the constitutional conferences the futu4re Prime Minister Sir Tafawa Belewa stated that “Nigeria existed as a nation only on paper. It is still far from being united. Nigerian unity is only a British intention for the country”. For Obafemi Awolowo; “Nigeria is not a nation; it is a mere geographical expression. There are no Nigerians in the same sense as there are English or Welsh or French.

The Jostling For Power

The showdown towards independence was characterized by mistrust that was reflected more in the leaders at that time. In 1953 Chief Anthony Enahoro (a Southerner) tabled a motion at the House of Representatives for Nigeria’s independence in 1956 but Northerners were skeptical and apprehensive about this seeing that they didn’t have enough administrative and educated workforce to fill up positions in an independent Nigeria. So in a vote this motion was neutralized by northerners seeing that they have the majority in the house. The AG and NCNC delegates walked out of the northern majority in the House.

The Polarity Of North-South Influence

It is not new that our leaders then; Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sir Tafawa Belewa, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo had trust issues for each other. This was divided among the South (Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo) and North (Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Belewa). What was the basis of this mistrust? The northerners as it were had the population so they dominated the House of Representatives and no major decisions could be taken if they voted against it while southerners on the other hand were more educated so the northerners feared that their southern counterparts would take up all the positions in the government. This was the internal political situation Nigeria found herself when it is suppose to be charting a new course for Africa’s democratic governance.

The New Government

The Northern People’s Congress (NPC) took over power in the federal government with National Council of Nigerian Citizens being the junior partner in what is called a shaky coalition. The deputy leader of NPC, Sir Tafawa Belewa became Prime Minister while the leader of the NCNC Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe became the ceremonial Governor-General until 1963 when the title was changed to president.

The Opposition

Seeing that there were three political parties then representing the 3 major tribes; AG (West), NCNC (East), NPC (North), with the NPC and NCNC forming the new government it left out the AG as the main opposition party. Obafemi Awolowo on the other hand was not happy about this and was not pleased because he and Nnamdi Azikiwe (figure head role) were not leading the government as intellectuals. The Sardauna and Belewa on the other hand didn’t not have degrees to their names.

The Sardauna Figure

Sir Ahmadu Bello was seen as the most influential leader at that time because he had control of the largest region; the north. He could have been the Prime Minister but he turned it down while appointing his deputy Belewa to be the Prime Minister.  According to him, “I would rather be called Sultan of Sokoto than President of Nigeria”. He was the leader of the most biggest party in parliament who always had their way in every decision or voting process. At one point he had to address Belewa as his “lieutenant in Lagos” and this caused a stir in the south towards Belewa and Northern Nigeria.

Mid-Western Region

In the Western region which was being led by the Action Group of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, there was an allegation leveled against AG leaders like Awo on planning to overthrow the government. The region became one of so many rancor and fighting that the federal government in order to weaken the opposition created the Mid-Western Region and Dr. Dennis Osedebay became the Premier of the Region. He was an Igbo Mid-Westerner. Till today it is the only region or state that was created democratically in Nigeria. The others were created by the military.

The Igbo Problem

The Igbo tribe has always been regarded as the most successful tribe in the country. A vibrant migrant population who were well known in the area of commerce and industry and this created lot resentment from other tribes especially their northern counterparts. They were seen in every city and town across the north and country and wherever they always dominated the indigenes of such places. The Sardauna’s indigenization policies made it such that more northerners were employed to do certain jobs and in a situation where there was no northerner or any other tribe he would opt for an expatriate to do the job. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe while addressing the Igbo State Union in 1949 said, “The God of Africa has specially created the Igbo nation to lead the children of Africa from the bondage of the ages”. This stirred up sentiments against the Igbos from other tribes.

He appealed to the APC leaders to have a rethink on endorsing Sanwo-Olu for the ticket.

“We have never responded to the campaign of calumny on social media. We have one family in APC. The aspirant being put up to compete against us is not a fit and proper person to take this job,” he said.

“I have done everything in the last three and half years to serve people selflessly and to serve the poor.

“This particular aspirant is somebody that has been arrested for spending fake dollars in a nightclub in America, and he has been detained for months.

“He doesn’t have the competence to do what he is being propelled to do. This is somebody that has gone for rehabilitation before. The records are there at the Gbagada General Hospital. We don’t want to go too far. Our leadership should have a rethink.

“I plead with our leaders to have a rethink, It is not about me, it is about the opportunity that APC has.”

APC now the weakest party in Taraba - Aisha Alhassan

Following her resignation as Minister of EWomen Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Alhassan, has picked the gubernatorial nomination form of United Democratic Party (UDP) for Taraba State.

Alhassan, who was disqualified from participating in the APC gubernatorial race in the state by the screening committee of the party, said she was moving to the UDP along with all the executives of APC in the state, local government and ward levels in the state as well as other aspirants on the platform of the party.

Addressing journalists at her residence in Jalingo on Saturday, Alhassan, who was the gubernatorial candidate of APC in the 2015 general elections, stated that with her defection to UDP, APC is now the weakest party in the state.

Fondly called Mama Taraba by her supporters across the state, Alhassan also accused the National Chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, of being the mastermind of her disqualification.

“I am now a member of UDP and I have purchased nomination form for governorship of the state under the party’s platform.

“Oshomhole has decided to do his worst but he doesn’t give power, it is God that gives power, so let him wait and see what will happen at the end of the day,” she said.

She however advised President Muhammadu Buhari to call Oshomhole to order saying failure to do so would lead to the death of the party.

She maintained that she was unfairly treated by her former party despite being a pioneer member of the party and contributing immensely towards its success. She said she deserved a better treatment.

“My movement to the UDP was a result of my being screened out by the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, who decided in his wisdom to say that I was disqualified and not fit to contest for election.

“I was unfairly treated and great injustice was done to me by that action. This is because I am a pioneer member of APC and we conducted the registration of the party because I was in the new PDP when the merger was done.

“I contested election in 2015 in this same APC which i was the gubernatorial flag bearer of the party. I was also screened subsequently as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria without any hitches

“To my greatest shock, on Thursday I heard I was not cleared, which I was confident of because when I went for the screening, they only asked for two things, which include my membership card of APC and my PVC which I presented.

CBN, NDIC move to prosecute Skye Bank directors, investors

There are indications that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the Nigeria Deposits Insurance Company, NDIC, are set to prosecute directors and investors who plunged former Skye Bank, now Polaris Bank into huge financial mess.

Recall that the operating licence of Skye Bank was withdrawn last week by the CBN which also announced its takeover and new name – Polaris Bank.

Prompt News Online gathered that there is ongoing campaign to discredit Polaris Bank by the same people who ruined Skye Bank.

According to a source, “Their plot is to create a run on POLARIS BANK in order to cover their tracks and mask their abortive attempt to defraud both the depositors and share holders of Skye Bank.”

The source however, assured that “the CBN and NDIC are preparing to press charges against them and bring upon them the full weight of the lawyers of Nigeria.

“After sharing depositors funds to themselves by way of non-performing loans, denying shareholders their investments, now they also wanted to defraud depositors.”

A concerned depositor who is in the picture of the steps being taken to bring former Skye Bank directors to justice spoke with newsmen: “We depositors of former Skye Bank and now POLARIS BANK can no longer sit by and allow these criminals to continue this false campaign in order to destroy our new POLARIS BANK.

“We believe and trust in the integrity of CBN and NDIC and we applaud the innovative manner in which they have managed the Skye Bank crisis.

“EFFCC should now step in and get hold of these thieves and jail them for corporate fraud and economic sabotage.”

Guardiola warns City stars of social media dangers

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola claims the rise of social media is a significant threat to the fragile relationship between managers and players.

Jose Mourinho's strained relations with Paul Pogba at Manchester United came under the spotlight again this week after posts placed on Instagram by the controversial France star.

Across Manchester, Guardiola has his own issues with social media and off-field behaviour after admitting he had to remind Benjamin Mendy of his responsibilities when the City defender arrived late for treatment to an injury on Sunday.

Mendy, who has now missed City's last four games, has a bruised metatarsal in his foot, yet the France international posted photographs of himself late on Saturday at Anthony Joshua's title fight at Wembley in London.

Guardiola confirmed he had no problem with Mendy travelling to London for the bout despite his injury.

But the Spaniard is clearly frustrated by Mendy's absence after he missed nearly all of last season with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

"I don't know (when he will return). I think soon, but I don't know," Guardiola said.

"When a guy comes here and is injured for seven months or arrives here and plays two or three games and after one month is injured it's always a problem.

"It's always a problem to be involved in the way we want to play and the meetings and correcting mistakes. That's why it's so important. Hopefully this injury can be the last."

The situation between Guardiola and Mendy appears nowhere near as combustible as the clash of the egos between Mourinho and Pogba.

However, Guardiola admits that social media, and the scrutiny that comes with it, has become a problem and, tellingly, he has already issued Mendy a polite suggestion this season that he should tone down his behaviour in that area.

"Characters are quite similar or the same," he said. "Competitors are competitors. Nice guys are nice guys. The egos are the same.

"The only difference is social media. Now it's more popular. Before, nobody knew what the players did inside the locker room or outside.

"Now everybody knows everything. Years ago they were human beings, they are human beings now too.

"With fears and good things and bad things. So it's quite similar. Now the media are more involved.

"Ten years ago nobody expected to make a documentary about what happened inside the locker room and now we made a documentary about what happened inside the locker room.

"Now everybody outside knows what happens inside, so we have to adapt. Human beings are the same. It was the same before."

Still, Mendy has been told, in no uncertain terms, that arriving late for training is unacceptable by the City manager.

"The players should be here and he knows it. I spoke with him," Guardiola said.

"I'm unhappy at every player arriving late. They have to be on time. Normally when you arrive on time you arrive on time in the game.

"At the high level when you arrive late you arrive late in the game.

"But I have no problem (going to London). Boxing is so important in England. In Spain nobody cares."

Meanwhile, Guardiola confirmed he would like to see City captain Vincent Kompany, who was this week awarded a testimonial, be given a new contract when his current one expires in June.

Kompany is in talks over a testimonial match to be played in August and Guardiola said: "Yes, that is my wish.

"Hats off! Ten years is a lot. It's incredible. He played the League Cup this week like it's the final of the Champions League. That means a lot to me.

"If he plays five minutes then they are going to be the best five minutes in his life."

Chelsea end Liverpool's perfect start to season

Chelsea ended Liverpool's perfect start to the Premier League season as the title contenders drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Liverpool had won all six of their previous league matches this term but, having lost to Chelsea in the League Cup in midweek, they fell behind on Saturday when Eden Hazard gave the west London club a 25th-minute lead.

But Daniel Sturridge's brilliant long-range strike a minute from full-time preserved Liverpool's unbeaten league run.

This result left Liverpool in second place, with champions Manchester City, who beat Brighton 2-0 earlier on Saturday, now top on goal difference.

Let's not lie, my goal was better than Salah's, says Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo believes the overhead bicycle kick he scored for Real Madrid against his current club Juventus last season was better than Mohamed Salah's which won the FIFA goal of the year award.

"Salah deserved to win the Puskas award, it was a good goal. But let's be honest, let's not lie to ourselves, my goal was the best," Ronaldo told his 142 million Instagram followers.

The 33-year-old Portuguese star lost out to former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric for the FIFA best player award and to Liverpool's Salah for the Puskas Award for the best goal.

Salah won the award for his curling strike against Everton in the Premier League in December.

"I'm not disappointed, life is like that, sometimes you win and others lose, what interests me is that in 15 years of career I managed to maintain the same levels of performance," Ronaldo said.

"Awards are awards... I already have a lot. I play to win and not to win awards."

Five days after the awards ceremony in London - which he did not attend - five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo hailed his former Real team-mate, saying: "Congratulations to everyone, to Modric, best player of the year according to FIFA."

Ronaldo scored his acrobatic goal in the Champions League quarter-finals against Juventus before joining the Serie A giants just months later.

The reigning seven-time Italian champions take on Napoli in a top-of-the-table clash Saturday. Juventus lead Napoli by three points after six games.

"It will be a good game, we want to win against a great team, it's an important day," added Ronaldo.

Osun election: How we wooed Iyiola Omisore to support APC – Adams Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says Iyiola Omisore was not offered money to support the ruling party in the Osun governorship rerun election.

He said the APC did not offer automatic ticket for elective position to the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Prior to Thursday’s rerun election, chieftains of the APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had met with Omisore, who turned out to be the major decider in the rerun.

But the SDP candidate later pledged to support Gboyega Oyetola, the APC candidate who emerged winner of the rerun.

Oshiomhole said: “I said we had a negotiation and had a deal that has to do with the governance of Osun state.

“I didn’t go with money and I don’t have money to give to anybody. He didn’t ask, and there was no basis for him to ask.

“The word automatic ticket has meaning. Having regards to the provisions of electoral act which makes primary mandatory, can you at the same time talk of automatic ticket? Even when I spoke to our national assembly members, it is not that I don’t know that the word exists, but I simply didn’t find it useful and never used it.

“We agreed that he will have an opportunity for him to contest for a seat on APC platform. Not just for senate or house of representatives, but also for house of assembly.

“Both the APC and the PDP recognise that we needed to do business with the other minority parties that participated in the election, and it wasn’t difficult to understand who to do business with if you want to influence the outcome of the election.

“While PDP were shouting in the morning that they were going to challenge the rerun, their leader went to Senator Omisore to persuade him to negotiate a possible working arrangement.

“He told us that, yes he has lost, but he believes that he can still win if we have a deal that seeks to address the primary purpose of his participation in the process, which is the governance of the state and specific policy issues that were of concern to him.

“We had a robust conversation and reached an agreement which I think is healthy.”

Diego Costa Regrets Swapping Atletico Madrid for Chelsea

Atletico Madrid forward, Diego Costa, regrets initially leaving the Spanish capital for Chelsea but feels that everything has eventually fallen into place.

The Spaniard joined the Blues in 2014 for a reported £35 million fee. In just three seasons, he scored 52 top-flight goals, 20 of them coming in 2017 - Antonio Conte's only title-winning campaign.

Despite being in superb form, Conte couldn't quite overlook Costa's behaviour and ended up dismissing the striker via text message in June.

"It was a very bad moment, but it wasn't my fault. People said things, but time puts everything in its place; look where the coach is, look at Conte," Costa said to Marca, referencing Conte's sacking in July.

"I was wrong going to Chelsea, because of their way of dealing with things. Cholo [Atletico coach Diego Simeone] is a direct coach, and when he doesn't love you, it's clear and he shows it."

"At Chelsea it was the opposite. I had the option of returning to Atleti and when Chelsea told me to go back to training with the reserves, I was clear that I was going back to Atletico, even though there were other offers."

"If not, I would've stayed in Brazil with my family. I had to live my whole life with my family. I have other values that no money can buy," Costa concluded.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Hilariously Trolls Mohamed Salah Over Puskas Award Win

Former Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes Mohamed Salah did not deserve to win the Puskas award for the goal he scored against Everton.

In fact, the LA Galaxy star admitted that he did not even care to look up on who won the accolade because he was not part of the nominations.

FIFA caused some controversy when they declared the Liverpool talisman's strike as the best goal of 2018. Fans reacted in numbers on social media with the Egyptian hero's teammate James Milner too poking fun at the award. Majority of the fans believed that there were atleast two more goals in the nominations that were better than Salah's attempt.

As reported by TalkSport, on being asked about his opinion on Salah's goal, Ibrahimovic typically said, "No. I did not see the candidates, if my goal was not there I am not interested. My goal should have been there – the one against LAFC. Maybe I am there next year.”

The 36-year-old has a history of scoring some unbelievable goals, something which he has continued to do right till he has entered the twilight of his career.

Zlatan has already set fire to the MLS as he has netted 18 goals in just 23 games in the season up till now and is getting better with each passing game.

Osun rerun, embarrassment to Nigeria's democracy – Saraki

Senate President Bukola Saraki on Friday reviewed the re-run poll held in Osun state on Thursday and described it as an embarrassment to the nation’s democracy.

Saraki, who is the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Campaign Council on Osun State Governorship election, in a statement issued in Abuja said Thursday’s supplementary election in Osun State, was a charade and an embarrassment to Nigeria’s democracy.

According to him, “Yesterday, we witnessed another display of the subversion of the will of the Osun people during the re-run gubernatorial election in the State. The election was characterised by widespread voter intimidation, violence and harassment. Accredited observers were denied access to polling units and duly registered voters were prevented from participating in the electoral process by thugs and compromised security agents..

He went further: “Like I said a few days ago, this needless re-run election was only designed as an avenue for the ruling party to perpetrate electoral fraud. The nature of these elections is an embarrassment to our democracy and casts an alarming pall on the institutions responsible for protecting the will of the Nigerian people as stated through their votes. That was why for more than ten hours the INEC could not collate and announce results in just seven polling units with just over 2000 votes.

“It is surprising that the election in which on Saturday, the two leading candidates were running neck to neck with the PDP candidate having an edge, four days later, as a result of manipulations and impossible conditions, the APC candidate is now being credited with all the votes and some paltry number of votes were being recorded for the PDP candidate.

Saraki urged Nigerians and the international community to insist that the hands of the clock should not be turned back in terms of the achievements Nigeria recorded in the last general elections.

Said he: “We should not make a mockery of democracy by conducting elections in the manner that the Osun Polls were conducted. The Osun election is a clear indication of how the 2019 election will be conducted. It demonstrates that if we cannot conduct free, peaceful and fair elections in seven polling units spread across four local government areas of a state, then the conduct of the general elections in 774 local government areas across 36 states of the country is already endangered.

“I therefore call on the government, INEC, security agencies and development partners to ensure a radical change in the way and manner the next set of elections will be conducted. Osun 2018 Polls is a very low point in our electoral system.

‘”In the 2015 elections, Nigeria witnessed several gains in its electoral process. The process was transparent and people’s votes counted. These gains made it possible for the then opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to win at the centre and in many states of the nation. That election highlighted a fine moment in Nigeria’s democracy.

“It is disheartening that the major beneficiaries of those credible processes are now the ones subverting the basic principles of our democracy in every way possible. It is appalling that these people are willing to destroy our institutions in their quest to circumvent the desires of the people.

Hinting of plan by the PDP to immediately challenge the election result in court, Saraki said “it is important to once again reiterate that the re-run election in Osun State is not only about Osun State. It serves as a reflection of our country and the way we are viewed by the world. Like I said a few days ago, this theft of the mandate given to Senator Ademola Adeleke, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the elections, will not stand.”

He assured PDP members and supporters of our party, the PDP candidate, Senator Adeleke and the entire good people of Osun State that light shall always overcome darkness.

“We have come this far after several months of dedication and hard work. I ask that we remain of good cheer, steadfast and committed to the cause. Victory, no matter how delayed, will not be denied,” Saraki further said.

President Buhari , “I was called Baba Go Slow. Those who were going fast, where did they get to?

President Muhammadu Buhari has chided Nigerian elite for remaining silent in the face of alleged misrule of the country by the Peoples Democratic Party between 1999 and 2015.

He said while they allowed Nigeria to be mismanaged in 16 years without raising a voice in consternation, they have been accusing him of being too slow.

He wondered where those that were considered to be fast got to.

According to a statement on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke at a meeting he had with the Nigerian community in the United States of America on Thursday in New York.

The meeting was held on the margins of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly holding in New York.

Buhari said he had taken ordinary Nigerians as his constituency because of the way they had been standing by him.

He said this was the reason he has been conscious of them.

The President said, “They (Nigerian elite) didn’t say a word. Under the PTF (Petroleum Trust Fund, of which he was Chairman), we did roads from Lagos to Abuja, to Onitsha, to Port Harcourt.

“Since then, the roads were not done, between 1999 and 2015, yet the elite did not say a word.

“I was called Baba Go Slow. Those who were going fast, where did they get to?

“In 1983, military officers gathered and made me Head of State. I packed the politicians into jail, told them they were guilty until they could prove their innocence. We seized what they had looted, but after I myself was put in detention, the politicians were given back what they had looted. How many elites complained about that?

“Three times I contested elections; three times I went to court after the elections were rigged against me. No justice, but I said ‘God dey.’

“It was mainly the ordinary people that stood by me. That is why I am always conscious of them. They are my constituency. Even pregnant women on the queue would fall into labour, go to have their babies, and still come back to vote for me. I will keep doing my best for the country.”

Buhari told the Nigerians living in America that if he won the 2019 election, and he spent another four years in office, “I will leave some difference in that office.”

The diaspora Nigerians, in their scores, are top-flight professionals, drawn from fields like medicine, engineering, sports, the arts, investment, academia, politics, agriculture, transport, education, publishing, and many others.

Most of them expressed the wish to come back home and contribute to the change making a headway in Nigeria, to which the President replied, “You are contributing to this great country (America).

“If you want to help back home, invest in education in your constituencies. If you educate people, they won’t then accept nonsense from anybody.”

Ronaldo gets one-game Champions League ban, free to face Man Utd

Cristiano Ronaldo will be able to face his old club Manchester United in the Champions League next month after UEFA handed the Juventus forward a one-game ban on Thursday.

The Portuguese superstar was sent off in the first half of Juve's 2-0 win away to Valencia last week after a clash with Jeison Murillo.

He risked a potentially lengthy suspension, but instead the 33-year-old will only sit out his team's game at home to Swiss champions Young Boys next week.

Juve then play Jose Mourinho's United at Old Trafford on Tuesday, October 23, before hosting the English club in Turin on November 7 in Group H.

Ronaldo, a five-time Champions League winner, first won the competition with United in 2008 before leaving for Real Madrid a year later.

He moved to Juventus in July after nine years in the Spanish capital, and has so far scored three goals in Serie A for his new club.

Accountant-General: Labour strike may delay September salaries

The Accountant-General of the Federation, Alh Ahmed Idris, on Thursday called on the Nigerian Labour Congress to shelve it’s warning strike in order to allow the office complete the process of payment of salaries of civil servants.

Idris who said this in a statement issued in Abuja noted that the industrial action had led to a situation where workers who were directly involved in the release of funds for payment of salaries could no longer have access to their office.

He maintained that the payment of salaries could not be achieved under an atmosphere where critical stakeholders were not allowed access into their offices.

This, he noted, may make it difficult for the Federal Government to fulfil its promise of payment of salaries to workers before the end of the month.

He appealed to labour unions to shelve their strike in order to enable the office pay salaries to workers.

Idris noted that while he had reported to duty on Thursday with members of staff of his office, they were denied access as the gates were shut.

He explained that after much appeal to the labour union, he was allowed to go into the office while the gate remain shut to other members of staff.

This development, he noted, had made it practically impossible for the office to complete the process of payment of salaries.

He said, “We have a standing order from Mr. President to pay workers salaries from the 25th of every month, which we have striven hard to fulfil to Nigerian workers and this month will not be an exception.

“I must explain that salary payment involves a number of processes that do not begin and end with the OAGF.

“There are other critical stakeholders like the Cash Management Department in the Ministry of Finance and others who are supposed to do their beat before we can finalise.

“On coming to the office this morning we met the gates of the office locked and wondered how we can keep this promise if we are being locked out of the office.

“After speaking with the local arm of the Labour in the office on the need to pay salaries, they conceded to allow me and some of my staff in but the gates are still locked.”

Osun election rerun is open robbery - PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has described the rerun election held in Osun State as the biggest electoral robbery ever witnessed in the history of the state.

The Chairman of the PDP in Osun State, Mr Soji Adagunodo, said this in Osogbo on Thursday.

Adagunodo said the alleged brazen electoral fraud would be resisted by the party, saying the stolen mandate would be resisted in court.

He said the election was openly rigged by the All Progressives Congress with the support of security personnel in broad daylight,

Adagunodo said, “Thousands of eligible voters were chased away from their homes in Orolu, Ife North and Ife South Local Government Areas in the early hours of today.

“Scores of our supporters in those local governments were shot and stabbed on their way to polling centres and in the full glare of security men. Hundreds of people holding PVCs from other polling units were accredited and allowed to vote in Osogbo and Ife South Local Governments.

“PDP agent in Olode was axed and abducted at 7am today. Media men and election observers were denied access in several polling units. By the time access was granted to journalists about 11am, ballot boxes had been stuffed by APC agents acting in connivance with INEC officials.”

The PDP chairman said it was regrettable that election in seven polling units could not be freely and fairly conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He said, “We reject any returns of results from this sham and call on the INEC authorities in Abuja to direct that the so-called supplementary election result collation be put on hold now.

“We equally invite leaders of thought in Nigeria and the International community to rise up now to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from being ruined.

“We equally call on all members and supporters of our party to resist any attempt to foist concocted election results on the people of Osun using all legal means at their disposal.”

Strike: Buhari’s Chief of Staff meets labour leaders

The Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, on Thursday met some labour leaders at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting was called to resolve the issues that led to the ongoing warning strike by workers.

Kyari said he summoned the meeting with a view to ascertaining what stalled the ongoing negotiation on minimum wage. He said his interaction with the labour leaders showed that “It is the process of arriving at figure (for minimum wage) that got stalled.”

The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, who led the delegation said the outcome of the meeting would be taken to the relevant organs of the union. He said,

“The Chief of Staff tried to give us details of the government’s position which we will have to go and convey to our members and then we can revert to him.

“This is how far we have gone but clearly I think we have tried to share details of the information that pertains to the issue of the National Minimum Wage and how the ongoing negotiation was stalled and also the best way to get out of it.

“Government officials have given us their words which we will also go and communicate to our members and revert  to the government.” On when the strike will be suspended, he said, “The strike, as you are aware, was called by a larger organ. Until we get their mandate before we can make any pronouncement on the strike.”

Osun election| PDP calls for cancellation of rerun

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has called for the cancellation of the supplementary election in Osun State over alleged electoral malpractice.

Secondus, made the call Thursday at a press conference in Abuja, where he said that Osun state was under siege as security agencies deliberately chased away journalists, observers and supporters of the party from exercising their basic rights.

The party lamented that if what happened in Osun was what would happen in the 2019 general elections, the future of Nigerian democracy was bleak, warning that the country is sliding into crisis.

Secondus stated: “Today we are all aware of the rerun election in Osun state as we address the press conference. We, the members of the National Working Committee (NWC) has reviewed what has happened since, from the distribution of materials to the actual voting that has taken place in some of the units and wards.”

“We found that Osun is under siege, therefore today is a black day for Nigeria. We would think that it is a state or some units, but if you look at what has transpired so far from Ekiti to Osun state, Nigerians are groaning in pains especially the Osun people.”

“INEC must rise above what is happening in Osun and declare our candidate immediately and all the units where the security agencies have seized our people, some of them beaten up, their PVCs…. INEC should immediately cancel the elections in these areas.”

The party alleged that the right of the citizens was trampled upon, the wards and units had been seized by the security agencies who were allegedly acting on behalf of APC to make sure the election was rigged by all means.

Secondus stressed; “We want to call on our security chiefs that they swore to defend Nigeria and not to defend and protect one party. What we have witnessed in Osun showed clearly that APC is not ready for election and we are afraid that Buhari will handover if he loses election next year.”

Also, the Deputy National Chairman, South-west, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, said the party discovered early that the security agents colluded with the APC, thereby allowing those wearing uniform bearing the APC governorship name to vote.

“Specifically, in Orolu and Garage Olode and many of the seven units that were supposed to engage in this voting this morning, the took away all our members, seizing their PVCs, inducing the INEC staff with cash they cannot refuse.

“The APC governorship candidate was given a free hand to do whatever he wanted to do, while our people were driven away from the units,” he said.

Barcelona Would be the Worst Possible Transfer for Paul Pogba -Jamie Carragher

Liverpool legend Jamier Carragher has opened up about Barcelona's interest in Paul Pogba, claiming that the Frenchman would be making a mistake by joining the Catalan outfit as they are the least suitable team for him.

Pogba's relationship with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been on a downward spiral ever since preseason with the Portugese boss even going on to strip the Frenchman of the vice-captaincy following their shock loss to Derby County in the Carabao Cup.

Add to that the recent bust-up with Mourinho on the training ground and it looks like that the midfielder could move in January, with Barcelona touted to be a destination following their interest in him.

Carragher though believes that the Nou Camp would be the worst possible club for the 25-year-old to join as he would not suit their style of play.

"There's talk of him moving on, leaving Man Utd. There's other clubs in the world who haven't got Paul Pogba who have been very successful. Barcelona being one. I do think there is talent there, but talk of Barcelona? I can't think of a more ill-fitting player for Barcelona," he said to Sky Sports.

“Barcelona are all about discipline, staying in position, playing for the team. That is totally against everything Pogba plays for. Pogba plays for himself, does his own thing. People are saying Mourinho is causing problems, taking the captaincy off him, but he's not really a captain, is he, in terms of how he plays? He's letting his agent speak negatively about the club, how can that happen if he's that man for Man Utd, fighting for the club, fighting for the manager?”

Since returning to Old Trafford from Juventus for a then world-record transfer, Pogba has made 95 appearances in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and helping them win one EFL Cup and the 2016-17 Europa League.

US Envoy Hails INEC Decision On Osun Re-run Election

United States Consul General in Lagos F. John Bray, who was in Osogbo to monitor the rerun election, has described the process as credible.

He said he did not observe any malpractices or violations of the Electoral Act in Unit 17, Ward 5 where the rerun election took place.

Bray was at the unit from morning when voting started till result was announced at about 3.50pm.

Asked about his observations, he said: “The process has been credible.”

On allegations that some voters were denied access to some units by thugs, Bray said: “There are things going on in six other units. I cannot comment on those things.

“I’m here as an observer today. All I can talk about is what’s in front of me. And today in Osogbo its working fine.

“At this polling unit things have been going on pretty well today. No problem with card readers; people have been orderly.

“We have party agents here from all the political parties. I’m not hearing a lot of complaints. I haven’t seen any vote buying here.”

On why he was there personally to monitor the election, Bray said it was due to the importance the United States attaches to democratic processes.

“The United States is interested in democracy, because we’re a democratic country. So, we always support elections and democracy in Nigeria.

“I observe all the elections personally and I was here last week,” he said.

On how he rates the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bray said: “From what I’ve seen so far in Osogbo, INEC’s performance is fine.”

Bray, who was at the unit when gunshots were fired around noon, praised the security agencies for preventing any disruptions.

“There was someone who tried to disrupt the poll. They quickly got the unit back to order. The Police and security services came together.

“There was somebody trying to upset the balance, but he didn’t,” Bray said.

Osun Election| PDP accuses APC, INEC of rigging rerun

The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of rigging the Osun supplementary election.

In a statement by his spokesman, Ike Abonyi, Secondus said that the Osun election is a clear picture of what will happen during the 2019 general elections.

He linked the conduct of the Osun elections to that of the Ekiti governorship election, thereby accusing the APC of underserved victory.

“Democratic community all over the globe are watching and we would stop at nothing in highlighting them until the will of the people are allowed to prevail.

The PDP leader warned in particular security agencies to bear in mind that their allegiance and oath of office is to Nigeria state and her citizens not to any individual or ruling party.

He drew the attention of leaders of both INEC and security agencies to the fact that history has never been kind with anybody or group who wittingly or unwittingly thwart the will of the people.

Secondus said that PDP will not relent until it’s stolen mandates in Ekiti and Osun states are retrieved from the undeserving holders.

Carabao Cup: Three Things we Learned From Chelsea's 2-1 win Over Liverpool

Chelsea put an end to Liverpool's 100 percent win record so far this season, and knocked them out of the Carabao Cup in the process. The Blues came from behind to score two late goals to pick up the win and keep their undefeated run going.

Here are three things we learned from Chelsea's 2-1 win over Liverpool.

3. End of the winning run

Chelsea put an end to Liverpool's 100 percent win record that they had maintained since the start of the season, winning all games in both the Premier League and the Champions League so far. The Blues managed to put an end to that with two late goals, and instead kept their undefeated run going.

2. Fortress Anfield

This defeat to Chelsea would be only the second loss in 35 games in all competitions for Liverpool. The Reds have ensured that Anfield remains a fortress and that clubs come here and do not go back with a win in any competition under any circumstances.

They will hope this will be a one off and will be intent on taking revenge when they visit Stamford Bridge on the weekend and face Chelsea once again, this time in the Premier League.

1. Goal of the season contender

Eden Hazard, who came on as a sub to help Chelsea in the game, scored a special goal to seal the win, and would certainly be an early goal of the season contender. Chelsea had gotten back into the game thanks to an equaliser from Emerson before Hazard completed the turnaround in sensational fashion as he took several Liverpool defenders out of the picture coming in from the right, before firing brilliantly into the net.

Klopp Questions VAR's Verdict in Carabao Cup Defeat to Chelsea

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has questioned the Video Assistant Referee's (VAR) decision in allowing Chelsea's equaliser to stand, claiming the awarding of the free-kick in the buildup to be rather harsh.

He also believed that Ross Barkley and Alvaro Morata were in offside positions when the set-piece was cashed in.

As Liverpool led through Daniel Sturridge's second-half goal, Emerson Palmieri latched on a rebound off a free kick to pull Chelsea level. VAR was used to check the legitimacy of the goal, and Klopp felt the assistants didn't do a very good job.

"Both discussable," he said at his post-match news conference, as quoted by ESPN.

"I don't think it's a foul. He plays the ball and then he touched afterwards, but things like that happen. We constantly touch each other with feet, with arms and stuff like that. Not all of that is a foul. It's a clear ball and the linesman wanted to give a throw-in. That's it's a foul and then a yellow card is always strange."

"You have two players that are clearly offside and they block. Not to forget, they don't touch the ball. They block players, my players. That means a big impact in the situation. Then the other one, Barkley makes the header and, for me, is offside as well -- not much. But I don't expect that the ref would see that."

"Then you have the VAR and then you have a look and it's close. Why do you use it if you don't want to make the decision then? That's all. It was clear. I don't feel bad, it was only unlucky. You have a free kick that was maybe no free kick. I think in a lot of situations nobody whistles it."

"And the other one, maybe in the future when you use VAR then you say: 'OK, that's offside'. I don't expect using in situations like this, the VAR, to be honest. But if you use it, make a decision."

After Emerson's leveller, substitute, Eden Hazard, scored a wonder-goal in the 85th-minute to knock Liverpool out of the Carabao Cup.

NLC insists on strike as meeting with federal government ends in deadlock

The Nigeria Labour Congress, has said it will proceed with its strike starting on Thursday following the failure of the meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment in Abuja on Wednesday to reach a rapprochement.

NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, stated that the meeting ended in a deadlock as the parties failed to reach an agreement, adding that the industrial action will hold as earlier announced.

Speaking at the end of the meeting with the government delegation, he noted that the failure of both parties to reach an agreement on the issues raised means the strike will proceed as scheduled.

The meeting between the minister, tripartite committee on minimum wage and labour leaders, was called to address the concerns raised by organised labour, but it failed to reach an agreement.

I am ready for APC gubernatorial primary - Ambode

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday expressed his readiness to participate in Saturday’s primary election where members of the All Progressives Congress across the State are expected to choose the party’s flagbearer through direct primaries.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, the Governor said he is restating his readiness in line with the choice of the party in Lagos State and the validation given to the direct primary preference by the Governor’s Advisory Council.

“As our great party approaches Saturday, September 29th, 2018, earmarked for the direct primary election to choose the candidate to fly our party’s gubernatorial flag at the next general election, I am happy to restate my commitment to participate in that process having procured and submitted my nomination form and having formally declared my intention to seek a second term to continue on the path of unprecedented growth and development that our State has witnessed since 2015”.

The Governor expressed profound gratitude to the National Leader of the Party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; party elders and executives; GAC members; all APC members and every Lagosian “whose support, understanding and prayers have assisted me in no small measures in being used as an instrument through which our State has redefined the concept of greatness”.

The statement added that the Governor in seeking re-election is approaching the founding fathers and teeming members of the party with a “grateful heart, open arms and a pledge to open and deeper attention to the concerns of this one, big family”.

It added that a return of the party’s ticket to Governor Ambode will guarantee the stability of the State’s growing economy; ensure the continuation of the growth and development it has witnessed over time and ensure that the opposition does not take root in the State.

The statement congratulates the Governor’s co-contestants for the courage and commitment to the party and urges party faithful to come out en masse and vote peacefully in all the 20 Local Governments and 245 wards where the election will take place.

Osun election: Ademola Adeleke declares himself governor-elect

Ademola Adeleke, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun state, has declared himself the governor-elect.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the election inconclusive, saying the margin between the two leading candidates was not significant enough to declare a winner.

Adeleke had polled 254,699 votes ahead of Isiaka Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had 254,345 votes, leaving a margin of 353.

The commission had announced that 3,498 votes were cancelled across seven polling units in four local government areas.

It, therefore, fixed a rerun for Thursday.

Speaking in an interview with BBC News Yoruba, Adeleke said the people of the state were robbed of their votes.

He said this was not new in the country, citing the annulled June 12, 1993 as an example.

“The people of Osun state voted and they voted me as their governor; as I am speaking with you, I’m the elected governor of the state,” he said.

“They robbed us of our mandate and this is not the first time something like this would happen. The same thing happened during the June 12 election, the mandate was stolen too. Till date, there are still controversies over the annulled election.

“That is why the international community does not love us again; they said Nigerians are not trustworthy. What happened last Saturday has shown that we were cheated; now is the time for the people of Osun to sit up and we know that by the grace of God, we will get our mandate.

“The international community is watching us. It is shameful; if a governorship election is conducted in this manner, that means the same thing would be replicated during the forthcoming general election.”

Asked if there are plans to get support from governorship candidates of other parties, he replied that he believes he will be supported.

“The other governorship candidates have decided to work with me to make Osun state a better place, to make it progressive. I know they are good people and I believe they will support me,” he said.

All the 48 political parties will partake in the supplementary election but the real contest is between Adeleke and Oyetola.

Osun election: Why we’re supporting APC – SDP

Iyiola Omisore, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), asked his supporters to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Thursday’s supplementary poll to decide the winner of the Osun State governorship election, the SDP has formally announced it’s readiness to work for the APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola.

It was earlier on Wednesday reported that Iyiola Omisore, the SDP governorship candidate, declared his support for APC.

Endorsing Omisore’s decision, SDP said the APC has agreed to adopt its manifesto in forming a coalition government with its branch in Osun State.

The decision was documented in a communique titled “SDP communique on Osun election from meetings held at Osogbo, Iwo, Ile-Ife, Ede and Ilesha on Monday, September 24.”

The party, whose candidate returned third in the election on Saturday, said its decision was made after consultations with its leaderships and members in the 30 local government areas of Osun State.

In the communiqué signed by its branch executives in the various towns, SDP declared support for the APC candidate.

According to the communique, the leaders resolved they should form a working relationship with APC because “the characters in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are serial liars and not men of honour and integrity, having reneged in all previous agreements.

“There should be a strong and workable memorandum of understanding (MOU) capable of taking the interest of SDP members from wards, locals, states and national levels between the legal representatives from both parties, the APC and SDP.

“In addition, the present litigation against the PDP are another factors which reinforced our decision,” the document stated.

Omisore’s endorsement is seen as crucial in determining the winner of the election after the inconclusive poll n Saturday.

Ademola Adeleke of the PDP scored 254,698 votes to beat his APC rival, Oyetola, who polled 254,345 votes.

The PDP candidate was however not returned winner because the 353 votes between his tally and that of Oyetola are fewer than the 3,498 cancelled votes in seven polling units where supplementary elections will now hold Thursday.

The re-run election will take place in the seven polling units spread across Osogbo, Orolu, Ife North and Ife South local government areas.

APC and PDP have made several attempts to win over Omisore to their sides as leaders of the two parties met separately with him.

Ironically, the SDP candidate has history of previous cohabitation with the two sides.

He was elected deputy governor of the state in 1999 on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy which was the roots of one of the legacy parties that became APC in 2014.

He however fell out with his principal, the then Governor Bisi Akande, and was sacked as deputy governor. He thereafter joined the PDP and was in 2003 elected senator while standing trial for alleged involvement in the still unresolved murder of the then Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Bola Ige.

Omisore was the governorship candidate of the PDP in 2014 but suddenly left the party this year to pick the ticket of the SDP.

Ironically too, Isiaka Adeleke, the late brother of the current PDP candidate, left the PDP in 2014 to help Governor Rauf Aregbesola of the APC beat back the spirited challenge of Omisore, then the PDP candidate, to his reelection.

The animosity between Omisore and the Adeleke family may have played a huge part in the SDP candidate accepting to help try to overhaul the slim PDP lead in Thursday’s supplementary to the dramatic Osun governorship election.

I’d fire all Nigerian Army generals if I had my way - Omoyele Sowore

The convener of the TakeItBack Movement and the party chairman of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has said if he has his way, he would sack all Nigerian army generals to ensure the security of the nation.

In a statement signed by Rachel Onamusi-Kpias, his director, PR & media, the presidential aspirant said the top echelons of the military have failed in their duties to secure the nation.

Sowore also said the army generals continue to amass illegal wealth at the detriment of their junior officers and Nigerians.

Part of the statement issued by the Sahara Reporters publisher reads: “There is irrefutable proof that these generals do nothing to neither defend our nation nor equip the hardworking soldiers to do their jobs. Army promotions have become political. Leadership has been embroiled in corruption cases, with countless of these generals buying houses in Dubai and other exotic locations while a war rages and the victims are innocent Nigerians – civilians and soldiers alike.

“Questions must be asked of these army generals when girls are being captured in their hundreds and the captors are allowed to march unharmed into town to release them after handsome ransoms have been paid. Questions must be asked when the ledger books show billions of naira being disbursed for national security and our valiant soldiers frequently have to beg villagers for food and shelter.

“The brave men and women who took vows to serve our nation are being short-changed by these very generals. The rank and file have demonstrated courage in the face of poor welfare, old and non-functional weapons while their leaders travel in armoured vehicles, educate their children in the most expensive foreign schools and receive world class treatment at the hands of foreign physicians.”

He also made some recommendations.

“We propose a discharge of these old cabals and put in their stead a world class national security system that offers protection to Nigeria, her citizens and her soldiers. We propose a listening government that makes the welfare of the troops our topmost priority. World class weapons will be provided. We will leverage intelligence from neighbouring countries and global intelligence from anti-terror efforts.

“We will finally tackle Boko Haram head on instead of working in partnership with terrorists, and finally, leadership within the military will not be based on nepotism but earned. Capable men and women will be promoted and empowered to lead our troops to victory!

“The business of heading the Giant of Africa is not for the weak-hearted or the complacent. Our borders must stand impenetrable. Our people must feel safe within their own homes, towns and cities. Our children must go to school and return to us safely. Our great nation Nigeria must progress.”
