Why North may rule Nigeria forever

Doyin Okupe, a former spokesperson on Public Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has hinted that the North may rule Nigeria forever.

Okupe explained that the inability of states in the South to unite irrespective of their differences, presents the North the opportunity to rule Nigeria “for perpetuity.”

He stated this in reaction to the Acting Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Alhaji Musa Liman Kwande, that Northerners would vote for a presidential candidate from the region in 2023.

In a post on his Facebook page, the former Presidential spokesperson noted that lack of unity among Southern politicians would create a platform for the North to continue ruling Nigeria.

Okupe wrote: “The Chairman of the Arewa Forum recently declared that in 2023 the North will vote for a Northern candidate irrespective of political party considerations. Many southerners are upset at this audacity and blame it on the failure of southern politicians to form a political united front.

“Truth and reality is that the south cannot easily be united. The odds favour the North. NW the highest voting population is virtually homogeneous. The NE though may differ in tongue and to some extent culturally, still will always find common ground with the NW based on religion and language.

“The technical buffer zone the NC is largely disparate essentially haven little in common.

“The south – SS, SW and SE – are majorly distinct sub-nationalities with the exception of SS which like NC, are stand-alone tribes or clusters of nationalities.

“A Yoruba presidency has little or no direct benefit to a Delta indigene from Warri, or Izon from Yenagoa, or an Ibo man from Umuahia. So, even if the leadership of the South can spin off a semblance of political unity, it will be difficult to translate it into votes by the local electorates.

“In truth it is actually unfair to expect such unity as may be found among the Northern political elites.

“Nigeria, therefore, as politically constituted and with the adopted political format is intrinsically inequitable and not sustainable. The North can in theory, exploit the present situation and rule in perpetuity, but how long it can hold the nation-state together, will be the major challenge.”

Nigeria becomes first West African country to use 5G technology

MTN Nigeria Plc announced that Nigeria has become the first country in West Africa to try 5G technology and applications.

It was the outcome of a collaboration between the Ministry of Communications Technology and Digital Economy, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), MTN and Huawei (Abuja), ZTE (Calabar) and Ericsson (Lagos.)

MTN said it was honoured to host the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami; the Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission, Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, and the Chairman, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Garba Danbatta; House of Representatives, Committee on Communications, Honourable Akeem Adeyemi at the launch event, without whom the demo would not have been possible.

“This immersive demo and experience will travel across three Nigerian cities to showcase the capabilities of 5G and its potential to enable economic growth, and social inclusion”, the statement added.

The telecom giant explained that “by working together, MTN and its partner – Huawei – were able to provide a glimpse into a range of 5G use cases and applications at a test Lab designed to show proof-of-concept in Abuja. Standing alongside former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, attendees got to match their skills against an artificial-intelligence powered goalie; immerse themselves in a high-speed, low-latency virtual reality gaming world; experience ultra-high speed streaming and downloads on 5G devices; and engage in discourse with life-like holographic projections.

“The 3D holographic communication has potential applications for education, medical imaging, video conferencing and gaming, and requires about four times as much data as a streamed 4K video. That means that 5G is best suited to support this kind of application on a mobile network and to enable its use. It also demonstrates how 5G has the potential to support key socio-economic objectives Nigeria has set for itself, and to be a key contributor to the emergence of a fully digital economy.

Speaking shortly after taking a tour of the exhibition booths, Pantami underlined the potential of 5G for sustainable growth. “I believe as long as we are able to handle the potential challenges, the deployment of 5G is very critical to our economy because of so many advantages of 5G, the issue of latency, speed and many more.”

Stressing the importance of an enabling regulatory framework and protecting telecommunications infrastructure, the Minister stated that on the instruction of the President, he has signed a draft Executive Order declaring telecommunications infrastructure ‘critical national infrastructure’ which has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation for review. The Minister referred to the proposed Executive Order as a short-term measure, stressing that the President has instructed that a proper legislation be facilitated to deal conclusively with threats to telecommunications infrastructure.

Highlighting the importance of partnerships, Ferdi Moolman, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria said: “Pushing boundaries is easier when your aspirations are supported by likeminded people. We are here today because of the support and guidance of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the NCC who provided the trial spectrum used for this.”

Yuletide: Federal government to fix major highways

Ahead of the yuletide celebrations, the Federal Government has commenced plans to fix major arterial roads across the country to ease the plight of road users.

In continuation of the plan, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has met with the major stakeholders in the implementation of the Ministry’s plan.

The meeting according to a statement signed by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Press, Stephen Kilebi, was aimed at reviewing the state of all on-going construction and rehabilitation work on the major arterial roads with a view to facilitate ease of movement during the Yuletide season.

In attendance at the meeting were: the Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corp, Oyeyemi Boboye, officials of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Directors of the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, State Controllers of Works and Housing, Contractors for some ongoing road projects across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Fashola noted that the meeting was necessary in view of the demand of the upcoming season for high vehicular movements, more people traveling and increased activities of both importers and exporters on our major roads.

He explained that, it was the responsibility of the ministry to ensure all necessary things were done and put in place in order to facilitate easy and smooth movement of travellers during the season.

While enjoining the Federal Road Safety Corps to intensify campaigns on over speeding and unlicensed drivers on our highways, Fashola advised that the Corps should apprehend and prosecute violators of highway rules and regulations for sanity and orderliness by road users.

The Minister added that whenever there was orderliness on our highways by road users, accidents on our roads would be reduced.

Fashola directed the Ministry’s Director of Highways Construction and Rehabilitation to list out all key arterial roads that need urgent attention and commence action immediately.

In his remarks, Oyeyemi stated that the FRSC has put adequate measures to facilitate movement of travellers during the season and also listed some of the arterial roads and the diversions proposed.

Some of the arterial roads to be fixed include the following among others: Ibadan-Lagos, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, Shagamu-Mowe, Abraka-Agbor, Benin-Asaba, Auchi-Benin, Calabar-Nkom, Ogoja, Calabar-Itu-Uyo, Kontagora-Minna, Abuja-Lokoja, Oybomoso-Ilorin, Jos-Panshin, Enugu-Onitsha.

FRSC dismisses 62 personnel for corruption

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said it dismissed 62 of its personnel in 2019.

The FRSC corps marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, said this on friday in  Abuja on efforts to rid the corps of corruption.

“These consist of 14 officers and 48 marshals with several others receiving various degrees of punishment in accordance with the provisions of the FRSC regulations on discipline,” he said

He said the collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the State Security Service (SSS) has led to the investigation of 172 officials.

“I wish to use this opportunity to urge members of the public not to hesitate to report any wrongdoing by the FRSC personnel for proper disciplinary actions, as the corps will not condone bribery and corruption from any of its personnel,” Mr Oyeyemi said.

He said the agency will not condone bribery and corruption within its ranks.

According to him, FRSC is the first government agency to collaborate with the Akin Fadeyi Foundation and MacArthur – both non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – for the launch of Flag-IT, an application developed for reporting corruption cases.

The corps under the leadership of the present corps marshal established the first National Traffic Radio 107.3 FM, he said.

“Apart from the cardinal role of sanitizing the public on the best road use culture, the station is to serve as a direct medium through which dissatisfied members of the public can call in to report complaints of service failures, extortion, bribery against members of the corps by aggrieved members of the public.”

The corps marshal assured Nigerians that all hands will be on deck to ensure that the yuletide period is crash free.

FRSC is the government agency with statutory responsibilities for road safety administration in Nigeria. Founded in 1988, the agency operates in all Nigerian states as well as the Federal Capital Territory and is the lead agency in Nigeria on road safety administration and management.

Three Things to Look Forward to as Manchester City Host Chelsea

Manchester City take on Chelsea at the Etihad this evening as both sides will fight each other to get close to league-leaders Liverpool. Chelsea and City are separated by just a point as the former have 26 points while the latter have 25.

Liverpool are running away with the league with 34 points from 12 games and after this match, at least one team could be far behind the Reds (if they win their match).

With that in mind, here are the three things to look forward to from this encounter between the Sky Blues and the Blues:

3. Stopping Kevin De Bruyne Key for Chelsea

Kevin De Bruyne is at his best right now and we are all aware of what he is capable of when he is in such form. He has started nine times for the Citizens so far this season and has provided nine assists in the campaign.

Against Chelsea, he will be against a side that might have the momentum with them but are definitely weak in defence. Only Burnley have conceded more goals than the Londoners among the top 10 teams in the division, which is a testament to how fragile the Blues’ defence is.

2. Defensive Dilemma for City

While the Blues may not have the best of defences, Manchester City, too, have problems of their own. The Citizens don’t really have a set backline due to the injury to Aymeric Laporte and the lack of faith Guardiola has shown in Nicolas Otamendi.

John Stones may be available but against Liverpool, it was clear that his partnership with Fernandinho at the heart of the defence was not exactly unbeatable. As a result, it would be interesting to see how Chelsea’s strong attack fares up against them.

1. End-to-end Game on the Cards

Both Manchester City and Chelsea may not be enjoying the best of times when it comes to defending but attack has been their best asset and we could expect a spectacle in this match.

The two teams love to play an aggressive vertical brand of football with Lampard’s team more direct that Guardiola’s men. A lot of end-to-end football can be expected from this clash and this could be a match that sees a lot of goals.

The home side need a win to recover from the loss to Liverpool and get their season back on track and should be the aggressor.

Meet Peter Arotiba 18-year old Nigerian receives merit award for emerging overall best in WASSCE

An 18-year-old Nigerian, Peter Arotiba, from Kogi State, has been awarded the National Distinction and Merit Award by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) for emerging overall best student in the 2018 examinations.

Arotiba, who is currently studying Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ibadan, graduated from the Nigeria Air Force Secondary School, Ikeja, Lagos State.

He was recognised alongside two others at the opening of the 57th Annual Meeting of the Nigeria National Committee (NNC) of WAEC, in Abuja on Thursday.

Newsmen report that Arotiba had obtained distinction in all the eight subjects offered in the 2018 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Speaking with journalists after the awards presentation, Arotiba said that achieving success was a function of so many factors, the chief of which was God’s grace and hard work.

“A lot of heroes, who have participated in building me up to who I am today, instilled the spirit of excellence in me – my parents, my teachers and, personal hard work.

“I have a natural passion for reading, so studying was not an issue to me. When you work hard and depend on God’s grace, one will never be disappointed.

“The sacrifice made to achieve this feat was the high level of discipline during examinations as I let go of other programmes I enjoyed and concentrated fully.

“I study ahead by studying during the holidays. Lazying around during the holidays and playing around with friends during holidays were some of the things I refused doing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Olu Adenipekun, Head of National Office, WAEC, said the NNC was set up as the highest policy-making organ of the council which ensured that policies were formulated in the best interest of the council.

Adenipekun said that the committee was also made to effect positive changes in the education sector of the country.

Also, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, Chairman, NNC, said that the council had improved on its service delivery by taking advantage of the ICT to improve the service, including the online registration of candidates for WASSCE for school and private candidates.

Abdulkadir said that the development had enabled the country to handle its migration from paper to electronic enrollment for its examinations.

She added that the council had also perfected its electronic portal system, an online portal that provides an avenue for the verification of results.

She noted that the council would also be recognising the three best schools in the WASSCE, who would be subsequently presented with the WAEC endowment fund whose prize is worth 5,000 dollars.

“The council, over the years, has greatly improved on its service delivery to its numerous stakeholders. The Nigeria National Office, in particular, has taken advantage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve its service delivery.

“These, among others, include the online registration of candidates for both the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates and private candidates.

“This development has enabled the council in Nigeria to achieve 100 per cent migration from paper-based to electronic enrolment of candidates for its examinations.

“There is also deployment of Quick Response Code (QR-Code) on its certificates, which makes it impossible to falsify certificates issued by the Council,” she said

Similarly, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, pledged the support of the ministry to the council for the advancement of education in the country.

He, therefore, commended WAEC for its role in stemming examination malpractices while providing an enabling environment for education to thrive.

Newsmen report that Miss Oluwabukunmi Adeagbo, who is currently studying Medicine at the University of Debrecen, Hungary came second while Prince Abiamamela Obi-Obuoha, now studying Mechatronic Engineering at the Afe Babalola University, came third.

WAEC also named the three overall best schools from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the 2019 WASSCE to include Loyola Jesuit College, Louisville Girls’ Secondary School and Stella Maris College, Abuja.

Members of the council are drawn from the Federal Ministry of Education and stakeholders such as representatives of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS), Polytechnics, Universities, Colleges of Education, National Union of Teachers and JAMB.

Senate approves VAT increase from 5% to 7.5%

The upper chamber of the National Assembly on Thursday passed the Finance Bill and raised Value Added Tax (VAT) from 5% to 7.5% amidst protests from some lawmakers.

The Senate passed the 56 amendments on the 2019 Finance Bill but some senators kicked against the increase in VAT during the presentation and consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Finance.

The bill proposed an increment to Value Added Tax and some amendment to the fiscal laws to ensure adequate funding of the 2020 budget.

It would be recalled that the Finance Bill 2019 was submitted by President Buhari to the joint session of the National Assembly on October 14, 2019.

The bill, made up of seven components, includes the Companies Income Tax, Value Added Tax, Customs and Excise Tariff, Personal Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Stamp Duties and Petroleum Profit Tax.

The bill had proposed to introduce tax reforms which would help government achieve its revenue projections for the 2020 budget.

Some of the proposals in the bill include an increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) rate, moderation of inefficient and ineffective tax incentives, and closing loopholes in the existing tax laws that allow tax avoidance resulting in tax revenue leakages, among others.

Recall that the Senate Committee on Finance had conducted a public hearing to seek additional inputs of stakeholders to the bill following its seconding at plenary.

The objectives of the bill is to promote fiscal equity by mitigating instances of regressive tax invasion; reform domestic tax laws to align with global best practices, and introduce tax incentives for investment in infrastructure and capital markets.

It also seeks to support small businesses in line with the ongoing reform on the ease of doing business and raising of revenues for government by various fiscal measures, including a proposal to increase the rate of Value Added Tax from 5 percent to 7.5 percent.

In his presentation of the report, Chairman of the Committee, Olamilekan Adeola, said the bill specifically seeks to amend Nigeria’s tax provisions and make them more responsive to the tax policies of the Federal Government, among other things.

He added that the amendment and passage of the Finance Bill would enhance the implementation and effectiveness of government’s tax policies.

He said the initiative to reform the tax system and the proposed modifications to the fiscal rules around taxation are clearly aimed at creating an enabling business environment aimed at minimising the tax burden for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Adeola further said the Finance Bill, as amended, would promote fiscal equity by mitigating instances of regressive taxation, as well as introduce tax incentives for investment in infrastructure and capital markets.

Contributing to the report, Abdullahi Yahaya (APC-Kebbi) noted that the problem of revenue was a major issue in moving the economy of the country forward, urging the senators not to play politics with the economy.

He said it was a concern that Nigeria had not been able to raise revenue for implementation of its budgets over the years, adding that the senators should look at the Finance Bill 2018 dispassionately.

Abba Moro (PDP-Benue) said it was necessary for the Senate to revisit the clause on amendment of Value Added Tax (VAT), noting that the comparison of Nigeria with other developed nations as basis for the increase in VAT was not tenable.

He urged the Senate to be careful on the clause to increase VAT from 5 percent to 7.5 percent for the interest of Nigerians.

Orji Uzor Kalu (APC Abia), however, stated that the bill, which is about the Nigerian people, was not designed to tax the poor but luxury goods.

Gabriel Suswan (PDP-Benue) said some of the amendments sought in the bill would definitely affect Nigerians, urging the Federal Government to put in place a social safety net to mitigate the effect of the increase on VAT.

Ifeanyi Ubah (YPP, Anambra) said the amendment sought on the petroleum income tax would create additional challenges to stakeholders in the industry.

He said the petroleum industry was not growing the way it should, hence the amendment would pose additional challenges to the sector, adding that the industry players in the sector were not invited to make inputs to the bill.

Following debate on the report, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole for a clause by clause consideration of the bill.

Following the unanimous affirmation of voice votes on the clause by clause consideration, the Finance Bill 2019 was passed after the Senate reverted to plenary.

In his remarks, after the clause-by-clause consideration of the bill, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said the bill passed by the Senate was intended “to ensure that we (the National Assembly) streamline the tax system in Nigeria and get revenue for government to provide services and infrastructure to the citizens of this country.

“What we have done is very significant because this is to ensure we not only have credible and reliable sources of funding for the 2020 budget, but also for subsequent activities of government.”

Senator Melaye storms INEC office, calls for cancellation of Kogi West election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Kogi West Senatorial poll, Dino Melaye, has called for total cancellation of the November 16 election.

Melaye made the call while submitting a petition at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja over the election on Wednesday.

The petition addressed to INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, was received by INEC National Commissioner, Festus Okoye, and the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

Melaye said he had also copied INEC National Commissioner supervising Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa adding that he attached to the petition 21 video CDs and documentary evidence to prove that there was no election in Kogi West on November 16.

“The object of my petition is that I am demanding for the entire cancellation of the election.

“The demand is based on electoral malpractices, violence, ballot boxes stocking, the use of helicopters to intimidate voters among other electoral crime committed on November 16

“This is not an election; we are going to take it up and fight for our right to finish,’’ Melaye said.

He alleged that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) as well as requisite Guidelines and Regulations issued for the election.

“We urge the commission to cancel the entire election for the Senate in Kogi West held on November 16,’’ he said.

Melaye said that the claim that fake policemen operated during the election was condemnable.

“If fake police officers overpowered over 66,000 security officers deployed for Kogi and Bayelsa, it means there is a problem in the country.

“If the police officers were fake, were the guns and bullets used, fake?

“Were fake police men driving police vehicles and helicopters?’’ Melaye asked.

Okoye who received the letter on behalf of INEC Chairman commended and assured Mr Melaye that the commission would look into the petition.

Social Media Bill: Senate proposes N10m fine, three years imprisonment for offenders

The Senate on Wednesday passed the Social Media into second reading as the lawmakers proposed three years imprisonment for the offenders.

The bill is seeking protection from internet falsehood and manipulations.

Leading debate on the bill, Senator Mohammed Sani stated that as much as the internet has numerous benefits, it is also used for the purpose of manipulating information and spreading falsehoods.

He noted that state and non-state actors engaged in geopolitical interests and identity politics, use internet falsehood to discredit governments, misinform people and turn one group against another.

Sani said: “The bill is a 36-clause legislative proposal.

“It clearly provides for the prevention of broadcast of falsehood and manipulative content using internet and its intermediaries for transmission.

“It prescribes sanctions to offenders with a view to deference.

“The penalties for defaulters range from fines up to N300,000 for individuals up to N10 million for others and imprisonment up to three years or both.

“The bill also provides for issuance of regulations dealing with transmission of false statements of facts in Nigeria upon declaration.

“It also issues guidelines for internet intermediaries and providers of mass media services and sanctions for offenders.”

Speaking in support of the bill, Senator Ibrahim Gobir urged the Senate to expedite action on the bill.

Also in his own contribution, Senator Elisha Abbo commended the sponsor of the bill, saying the issue of fake news need to be regulated because it is a cancer waiting to consume everyone in the country.

Abbo said: “I want to commend Distinguished Senator Musa for sponsoring this Bill.

“The issue of fake news in this country, if it’s not regulated, is a cancer waiting to consume all of us.

“Even conventional media that are regulated are suffering from falsehood.”

However, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani kicked against the bill.

Newborn Baby Gives Dad A Glowing Smile The Moment She Hears Him

A couple in Brazil was greeted by the sweetest and most unexpected smile from their newborn baby.

The moment the couple held their precious baby, she instantly began to smile as she heard her father’s voice. The couple was ecstatic as the moment was captured on camera.
Flávio Dantas and Tarsila Batista are the proud parents of Antonella, the smiling baby. According to healthylifeboxx, Flávio made a daily effort to talk to their daughter even when Tarsila was just pregnant.

Every morning before Tarsila would go for work, Flávio always made time to talk to their baby. While stroking Tarsila’s belly, he would tell his baby that he would always be there for her.

As per the report, the couple said that every time they talked, they saw the reactions of their unborn daughter. They said she would always start to kick and move around.

Their daughter, Antonella was born at Marcílio Dias Naval Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. When the nurses handed Antonella to her parents, she gave the sweetest response.

She was still asleep as she was handed to the couple. But then, the most amazing thing happened as Flávio leaned in close to say “hello”.

He repeated the same words she said to his daughter while Tarsila was in pregnancy. This time, however, instead of a kick, Antonella responded by opening her eyes and giving her parents the biggest smile.

According to a study, your voice does great things for your baby. Based on an article from Aptaclub, the sound of it is calming, both in the womb and when you finally get to meet.

The study led researchers to conclude that your unborn baby learns to recognize and remember your voice during pregnancy. Conversations during the third trimester already develop their social, emotional, language, and memory skills.

3 Reasons Why Jose Mourinho Joining Tottenham Hotspur Is a Good Move

So it has happened. The dominoes were building up to this the moment Tottenham reached the final of the Champions League. With that squad and that budget, it was their pinnacle in terms of achievements in the last four years.

Since then, the dominoes kept falling one after the other and things came crashing down for Mauricio Pochettino as he got sacked. Spurs' greatest manager of the modern era couldn’t survive a string of bad results, which just goes to show what a dangerous world this has become to live in.

READ ALSO Saha Reveals Why Ruud van Nistelrooy Made Cristiano Ronaldo Cry

Tottenham have now brought in Jose Mourinho as his replacement and while most people think they are going to be doomed now, here are three reasons why that won’t be the case…

3. Tottenham Is His Type of Club

Jose Mourinho might give the aura that he is a top club manager but the truth is that he has been more successful at not-so-top clubs. For instance, he won the Champions League with Porto at a time no-one thought they were capable of doing that.

With Chelsea, he had a team that didn’t have much of a history and at Inter, he was with a team that had only won the Serie A after almost two decades due to the fall of Juventus following the Calciopoli scandal.

READ ALSO : Unions To Shut Down Banks Nationwide From January 2, 2020

On top of that, the Nerazzurri hadn’t won the Champions League since 1965, so it could be said that Inter, at that point in time, weren’t all that.

Right now, Spurs find themselves in a place similar to that of the three teams mentioned here. They are always regarded as contenders but fail to take the final step and win something significant – just the type of club Jose Mourinho has been successful at in the past.

2. Last Chance Saloon

The previous section was about the clubs where Jose Mourinho succeeded but it is the ones where he didn’t achieve the same level of success that have sometimes hurt him. He was sacked from all three of his last jobs and every time, he left on a bad note.

At Real Madrid, he alienated the most influential players in the dressing room – which is something he also did at his next two clubs. As a result, Mourinho has to address concerns about his man management skills in the recent past and get back to what he was.

At Tottenham, he has one final shot to repair his image and show the world that he is indeed capable of adapting to a different time – which is why he is going to be more motivated than ever before.

1. A Big Name for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have never really had a big name managing them. They found success under Harry Redknapp and Mauricio Pochettino, who, as good as they were, weren’t really world-renowned when they took over the reins at White Hart Lane.

Meanwhile, Andre Villas-Boas was much-hyped but he, too, was just that as he had only managed Porto and Chelsea by then, and was sacked within a few months at the latter.

Mourinho is the one true big name that the Lilywhites have been able to poach and his arrival would only put more limelight on the north Londoners. As unsuccessful as he might have been in the recent past, the Portuguese tactician is an attraction – a marketing magnet in his own right.

Jose Mourinho Officially Named New Tottenham Head Coach

Tottenham have officially confirmed former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho as their new head coach on a three and a half year deal, replacing the departed Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino was sacked on Tuesday evening following a poor run of results that began in early 2019, although that run did coincide with Spurs' remarkable journey to the Champions League final.

Mourinho was immediately heavily linked with the vacant post following Pochettino's sacking, with multiple outlets confirming the 56-year-old as one of the main candidates for the role, and Tottenham have now confirmed the appointment.

The former United and Blues boss said in a club statement: "I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Chairman Daniel Levy added: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Mourinho made his name with Porto, winning the Champions League with the Portuguese side before moving to Chelsea in 2004.

He was an instant hit at Stamford Bridge, winning two Premier League titles on the trot among other cup successes before he left the club in September 2007 by mutual consent. He then joined Serie A giants Inter, winning the league twice as well as his second Champions League.

Mourinho's success saw Real Madrid come calling in 2010, and he would win a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa de Espana before leaving for a second spell at Chelsea in 2013.

More Premier League and League Cup success followed before a traumatic third season with the Blues. He again left by mutual consent in December 2015, joining Manchester United the following summer.

A first season filled with Community Shield, Carabao Cup and Europa League success followed before finishing second in the Premier League during the 2017/18 term, but a disappointing start to the next season saw him sacked by December.

We have been stretched beyond limit and we are by this meeting informing our employers and the Federal Government that if they employers in the banks fail to come to the negotiating table as we have written them, by January 2, 2020 the two unions in the sector will shut down operations, she stated.

She lamented that despite the fact that the union as a reasonable trade union has continued to use dialogue option, the employers have been reluctant and refused to come to the negotiation table for a review of the expired Collective Agreement for the industry since 2007 as per provisions of Wages Board and Industrial Council Acts of 1973.

It is on this note that we are again reminding the Minister of Labour and Employer, and the employers in the finance sector to come to the negotiating table to ensure appropriate review of the collective bargaining agreement in line with the extant laws, Olasanoye said.

The ASSBIFI President who was re-elected for the second term saluted the courage and commitment of the CBN for policy formulations in the quest to resuscitate the economy.

She however urged both the CBN and National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to thread with caution and not to stampede operators or allow ill-experience foreigners to hijack the companies in the name of recapitalisation, adding that this will further jeopardise the situation in the financial services sector .

Besides, the regulators should keep applying best of wisdom in the process, knowing full well the implication of this policy on job losses to a willing workforce, she added.

Also speaking at the event, the President, Trade Union Congress (TUC) , Quadri Olaleye, said the rate of unemployment and crime has been on the rise

Nigeria is dying says Pat Utomi

One of Nigeria’s foremost political economists and former presidential candidate, Professor Pat Utomi, on Saturday said that the country is gradually dying from the actions of its political class.

Prof. Utomi further stated that all general elections conducted in the country since1999 have been rigged but did not name those behind the rigging.

Utomi, who dropped the bombshell as the guest speaker at the 4th Convocation Ceremony of McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, said that Nigeria is like what the United States of America was in 1979, a country in decline.

”The world says Nigeria has lost its strategic relevance in the world. But can the youths of Nigeria embrace the spirit of enterprise and through it save their country that once was a country of great promise,” Utomi asked.

Giving reasons for his position, Prof Utomi said the poverty level in the country is so alarming that citizens can feel it, and that violence has become rampant, with kidnappings in the South East, South-South and Boko Haram violence in the North East.

“Our politicians are a disgrace, they don’t play by the rules. We have never had free and fair general elections since 1999. I have the fact, all the elections were rigged,” he said.

”In many ways, Nigeria is like America was in 1979, a country in decline.”

Utomi, who spoke on ”Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists” said it is the youth of the country that can save it if given the opportunity like the American youth did in the 1980s.

He observed that the current reality in the country is that government action or regulatory risk is the most likely reason for business failure in Nigeria.

Saha Reveals Why Ruud van Nistelrooy Made Cristiano Ronaldo Cry

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has revealed the time when Ruud van Nistelrooy made a young Cristiano Ronaldo cry during a training ground row.

While discussing the recent Raheem Sterling-Joe Gomez row, Saha has told the story of an argument he witnessed back in the day.

"Ruud had that kind of ego: he wanted all the passes," Saha said in an interview with Four Four Two.

He continued, "And sometimes, for the development of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, it was difficult for the manager to deal with."

Revealing whether Van Nistelrooy made Ronaldo cry, Saha said, "Did Ruud make Ronaldo cry? Yeah, there were stories because I think they ended up in an argument at the moment when Cristiano's father had passed away, so it wasn't the right moment."

He concluded, "Things like that happen when two players have lots of spirit, but I'm sure Ruud regrets some of his words."

Ronaldo's father, Jose Dinis Aveiro, died of alcoholism in 2005 and sadly missed the majority of his son's many successes and triumphs in the game.

Then, former Labour communications chief Alastair Campbell, a good friend of Ferguson's, shed light on the situation in his book.

As reported by the Times, Campbell wrote the following regarding the Dutchman's departure,

"The last straw was when he told Cristiano Ronaldo he had found a new dad in Carlos [Queiroz, Ferguson's assistant] just after Ronaldo's dad, who was an alcoholic, had died."

"Carlos asked him to show respect and he said he didn't respect anyone there. He later apologised but CR was not having it. Alex sent Van Nistelrooy home when he heard about it later. He was not sure what he was going to do with him."

5 Oldest Players to Win the Ballon d’Or

It is that time of the year when most football fans focus on the Ballon d’Or. In about three weeks, the best player of the year will be awarded the Ballon d’Or while fans will debate whether he deserved to win.

However, this list is not about the future. Rather, the focus is on the past here. A great many players have won the award but this list focuses on the senior citizens.

Here are the five oldest players to win the prestigious individual accolade…

5. Fabio Cannavaro – 33 years, 2 months and 14 days

Remember the 2006 World Cup? It was a tournament lit up by performances from older players. Zinedine Zidane, at the age of 36, dragged France to the final, where they lost to Italy, who were being led by the mercurial Fabio Cannavaro.

Cannavaro was at his best in the tournament and was simply unbeatable in all the matches that he played. In the end, Italy won the World Cup and Cannavaro received the Ballon d’Or in 2006 at the age of 33.

4. Luka Modric – 33 years, 2 months and 24 days

When Cannavaro won the Ballon d’Or, he became the oldest player to win the accolade in this millennium. That record stood for over a decade and it wasn’t until last year that it was broken.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi had won all 10 Ballon d’Or awards from 2008 to 2017. In 2018, however, the streak was broken by Luka Modric.

After winning the Champions League with Real Madrid and the Golden Ball at the 2018 World Cup, where he helped Croatia reach the final, the Galacticos star was awarded the Ballon d’Or at the age of 33 years, 2 months and 24 days.

He was just 10 days older than Cannavaro when the Italian received his Ballon d’Or trophy, which now makes him the oldest player in this millennium to win the honour bestowed by France Football.

3. Alfredo di Stefano – 33 years, 5 months and 11 days

Real Madrid might not have been the club they are today if it wasn’t for the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano. His signing absolutely changed the complexion of the club as he led Los Blancos to five straight European Cups from 1955-56 to 1959-60.

The Argentine won the Ballon d’Or for the first time in 1957 and then won it again in 1959 – becoming the first player to win it twice. When he won it for the second time, he was 33 years, 5 months and 11 days old, making him the third-oldest player of all time to win the award.

2. Lev Yashin – 34 years, 1 month and 25 days

The former Soviet Union star is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper of all time. He was so good between the sticks that legends of his brilliance still echo in the football fraternity.

Yashin was nicknamed the Black Panther because he wore dark-blue/black attire from head to toe. While sweeper-keepers are the trend right now, Yashin was way ahead of his time as he was perhaps the first goalkeeper who rushed out to clear attacks and act as a sweeper in the process.

In 1963, he was awarded the Ballon d’Or for his performances that year and to date, he remains the only goalkeeper to ever win the accolade.

1. Stanley Matthews – 41 years, 10 months and 17 days

They say that records are meant to be broken. Some records, however, are eternal and will stand the test of time. Stanley Matthews – nay, Sir Stanley Matthews is one such legend who can never be beaten in this regard.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest English players of all time and holds the eternal record of being the first ever footballer to win the Ballon d’Or in 1956. Not only that, he was almost 42 at the time and given how players have to play almost 60 games in a season, it is almost impossible for anyone to be older than that and win the Ballon d’Or in the future.

Lionel Messi Inspired Barcelona to Pay Lifetime Salary to Every Player Who Won a European Title

FC Barcelona players from the past and present have one more reason added to the list of reasons that they need to thank legendary Lionel Messi for.

In a recent interview, former Barcelona player Juan Carlos Heredia revealed that Messi was the person who inspired former club president Joan Laporta to award every single winner of a European title at the Catalan club a lifetime salary after he led Barcelona to the UEFA Champions League title in Rome against defeating Manchester United in the final in 2009.

More than 290 players could benefit - with the Nou Camp side having amassed five Champions League tiles, four Cup Winners' Cups and three Fairs Cups.

Juan Carlos Heredia - who was victorious in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1979 alongside Johan Cruyff - is one of the recipients, and explained how the reward was inspired.

As reported by the Daily Mail, while speaking to 'The Tactical Room', Heredia said, "When Barcelona won the Champions League final in Rome against Manchester United with a goal from Messi, the club president declared that all those who were European champions with Barcelona were going to receive a salary for life. And he fulfilled it."

Messi's goal came in the 70th minute of the 2009 final in Rome, and sealed the win over Sir Alex Ferguson's side after an early Sameul Eto'o strike.

Since then, the Catalans have won two more European titles in 2011 and 2015, with names right from Neymar to Marc Bartra added to the list of Barcelona's European champions.

NYSC dismisses two corps members from orientation camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ebonyi has dismissed two corps members currently undergoing orientation programme for refusing to wear the statutory camp shorts and trousers.

The dismissal was made known in a statement made available, on Sunday, by Mrs Ngozi Ukwuoma, Information Officer, NYSC Ebonyi.

She gave the names of the affected corps members as Love Okafor and Odji Oritsetolaye.

According to her, the duo were spotted by the camp Director, Mrs Josephine Isu and her team during the routing morning inspection wearing white T-shirt with white skirts.

“They were accosted and upon interrogation, they disclosed that they could not wear white shorts and the trousers given to them by the NYSC because it was against their religious belief.

“Efforts made by the camp director to make them see the need to obey the camp and NYSC’s rules and regulations proved abortive as the matter was then officially reported to the authorities.

“The ‘de-kitting’ proceedings then commenced and the affected corps members were queried and subsequently faced the camp court,” she said.

Ukwuoma said that the duo were found guilty after stating that they were ready to bear the consequences of their actions.

“The court’s recommendations were submitted to the camp management and the camp director was directed to ‘de-kit’ them in the presence of security agencies.

“The security agencies then accosted them to the gate as they left the camp,” she said.

Chelsea Named Youngest Ever Premier League XI Against Crystal Palace & Boy Did They Look Good

Frank Lampard has completely changed the atmosphere and ethos around west London since his arrival, and after a shaky start to the season, the Blues have managed to go from strength to strength.

Chelsea moved into second place after another confident victory over Crystal Palace, beating the Eagles 2-0 thanks to goals from youngsters Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic.

The Blues put in an assured display that demonstrated an experience beyond their years, and Opta released a telling stat which wrote Saturday's kids into the record books. Lampard fielded Chelsea's most youthful Premier League side in history, and their starting eleven was the youngest in the top flight this season.

Chelsea's transfer ban was analysed intensely over the summer, but it seems to have been a blessing in disguise for Lampard's lads. Youth academy products such as Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount, Reece James and Tammy Abraham are following in the footsteps of Callum Hudson-Odoi in delighting the supporters with a string of determined and exciting displays, and the days of extreme spending seem a distant memory at the Bridge.

With Chelsea's record-breakers fresh off the back of another victory, let's take a look at how they performed during Saturday afternoon's 2-0 victory over the Eagles.

Goalkeeper

Okay, so admittedly this guy is the most expensive player in history in his position, and it's not much of a feel-good story, but former Athletic goalkeeper Kepa Arrizbalaga is certainly playing his part in Chelsea's surge up the table.

The Spanish shot-stopper put in an assured performance and kept another clean sheet, as his teammates did the business at the other end to bring home the three points.

Defenders

This is where the homegrown talent begins to shine. Reece James is everything we love in a full-back: pacy, dynamic and marauding. The Chelsea academy graduate came up against one of the trickiest and slipperiest wingers in the Premier League on Saturday, but Wilfried Zaha was unable to shake off his stubborn marker for the entire 90 minutes.

The 19-year-old's season-long loan at Wigan last year gave the starlet valuable match experience, and it's going to be tough to wrestle that right-back spot out of his grasp.

Fikayo Tomori is one of the surprise inclusions in Lampard's eleven this season, but the new boss placed his faith in the 21-year-old by selling David Luiz to Arsenal and he is truly reaping the rewards. The former Derby loanee has adapted to the demands of the Premier league with ease after an excellent year in the Championship, and he was typically solid against Roy Hodgson's side on Saturday.

Fellow graduate and former Stoke and Everton loanee Kurt Zouma was less spectacular in the Blues' backline, but he coped admirably against a resilient Crystal Palace side.

Emerson Palmieri completed the Chelsea rearguard, and at 25 years old, the ex-Roma man is one of the more experienced heads in this youthful team. He too was solid, but not spectacular on the left hand side.

Midfielders

N'Golo Kante is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, and the 28-year-old brings experience at the highest level to Lampard's dynamic midfield. The former Leicester City star dominated the central battle once again, and helped the youngsters around him to flourish and hone their developing game.

25-year-old Mateo Kovacic looks a player reborn under his new boss after failing to impress during his spell under Maurizio Sarri. The former Real Madrid man buzzed around the pitch, breaking up play and starting attacks with some key passes. Another lovely display.

Now to the crown in the Chelsea Academy jewel, Mason Mount. The breakout star was in Derby's superb Championship season, and Lampard saw enough in the 20-year-old to keep him at Stamford Bridge for the following campaign.

Mount is a livewire in possession, and loves breaking between the lines to cause all sorts of problems for his opposition. A big future awaits the England international, and Frank probably sees a bit of himself in the starlet's courage and determination.

Forwards

The oldest player in the Chelsea side, and the man who considerably increased his team's average age, Willian occupied the right flank against the Eagles. The 31-year-old is the grandad of this starting eleven, and he put in a solid performance, providing some much-needed experience in front of goal.

The boy on Chelsea's opposite wing looks to be finally finding his feet. Christian Pulisic arrived from Borussia Dortmund this summer, and as the deal was agreed in January, months of intense expectation have weighed heavy on the 21-year-old's shoulders. Since bagging an excellent hat-trick against Burnley, however, Pulisic has made excellent strides, and he capped off another superb performance with a deserved headed goal.

Finally, top scorer Tammy Abraham encapsulates everything positive happening around Stamford Bridge at this current time. The academy product took the Championship by storm with Aston Villa last year, bagging 25 goals and helping the Villans to promotion, and Lampard was keen to retain the 22-year-old's services for this season.

Abraham bagged another goal to take his tally to ten for the season, and the Blues' future looks very bright in front of goal and all over the pitch.

How Ambode blackmailed, harassed us from performing – Speaker

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa on Friday disclosed how the immediate past administration of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode employed blackmail and harassment to witch-hunt and deprive the House of performing its duties appropriately.

The Speaker, who stated in his remarks after receiving the 2020 budget proposal from the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said, “Regarding the last administration, I have heard from different quarters about people asking why this House did not properly query the actions of the immediate former governor while in office. Alas, there is nothing of such.

“Let me take you down the memory lane that it was in this House that Vision Scape, a policy of the last administration, was openly condemned and tagged a ghost. Remember too that this House questioned the provision of the budget for this idea.

“But some people, like one Olu Fajana with his faceless group calling themselves the Legislative Probity and Accountability (LPA) led a protest to this House. They used the medium to blackmail the House instead of reasoning with us to join hands in moving the state forward, by avoiding the treasury of the state from being touched unconstitutionally.

“With this, it is common knowledge that the last administration employed blackmailing and harassment to witch-hunt and deprive the House of performing its duties appropriately.

“Ladies and gentlemen, let me remind this gathering that of recent, Lagos State budget has become a topical issue vis-à-vis last administration where the provision of the budget law was being viciously violated. It is worthy of note that the Nigeria 1999 Constitution recognises the separation of power and empowers the State House of Assembly to dictate how the state fund is being expended and the manner of its presentation.”

While insisting that the House will never be deterred from doing its work, the speaker assured that the House is ready to collaborate and support Sanwo-Olu’s administration and to ensure that all the electoral promises made are achieved and delivered promptly.

Obasa explained further that the matter of budget presentation is essential, adding that beyond its constitutional stipulation, it requires the backing of the law to make it implementable and executable; without which it becomes an offence punishable under the law.

Afenifere ask VP Osinbajo to resign as vice president

The Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere has charged the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to resign his position, following reports of his office been undermined.

Afenifere said Osinbajo should do exactly like the former Chief of Staff to ex-Military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe who stepped down after certain decisions were taken without his knowledge.

National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, gave the call in a reaction to the reports that some aides of the Vice President were allegedly sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari.

On Thursday, Odumakin said stepping down was the most honourable thing for Osinbajo to do at this point in time.

He said: “I can’t fathom what Osinbajo is still doing in that place. He is a Yoruba man and our people say Iku da jesin (Death is more honourable than certain indignities). Except if he has become a hostage of a sort.

“This is the time to remember Ebitu Ukiwe, who resigned as IBB’s Chief of General Staff because some decisions were taken about Nigeria without his knowledge. That was under military rule based on fiat.”

Maurizio Sarri Explains Why Cristiano Ronaldo Reacted Furiously After Being Substituted

Juventus manager, Maurizio Sarri has opened up on star player Cristiano Ronaldo's angry reaction to being substituted during their 2-1 win over Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday, claiming that, "the Portugese had that reaction because he had sustained a minor knee injury".

The 34-year-old was substituted in favour of Paulo Dybala in the 82nd minute of the game, which was the first time since February 2016 that he has failed to complete 90 minutes in the competition.

Ronaldo was not a happy man with Sarri's decision, and was seen exchanging words with the Italian as he made his way to the bench. Sarri though has played down the strikers reaction, revealing that it was due to a minor knee problem.

"Ronaldo was angry because he wasn't very well, he had a knee problem a few days ago and his adductor easily got tired. At the end of the first half he was nervous. I was afraid he would hurt himself and I preferred to take him off," he said post the game, as quoted by Goal.

During the win, the Bianconeri netted their 300th Champions League goal, becoming just the fifth club to achieve that feat in the competition after Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United.

Juventus, however, booked their last 16 berth in the Champions League after Douglas Costa scored the winner in the injury time.

Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) also booked their Champions League last 16 spots on Wednesday night.
