Cristiano Ronaldo Challenges Ballon d'Or Nominees to Match What Lionel Messi and He Have Achieved

Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has named the five players with the exception of Lionel Messi, who will pose a huge threat to his Ballon d'Or winning ambitions this year.

He also challenged this year's nominees to achieve greatness like Messi and himself at the highest level for more than 10 years.

The 33-year-old is looking to win the famed individual award for a record sixth time, more than any other player in history.

In an exclusive interview with France Football, Ronaldo cited his greatness and claimed that he is not obsessed with winning the Ballon d'Or.

He said, "I said many times, winning a sixth Ballon d'Or is not an obsession. And I do not ask the question in these terms. I already know, in my heart of hearts, that I am one of the best players in history."

However, he did reveal that he is ambitious and wants to win because he deserves it, saying, "Of course I want to win, this sixth Ballon d'Or. It would be a lie to tell you the opposite. I work for that. As I work to score goals and win games without being an obsession. I think I deserve it."

He was then asked about his rivals for the award, to which he replied, "The same as usual, even if I don’t know if Messi will be on the podium this time. So, let’s say Salah, Modric, Griezmann, Varane, Mbappe – the French in general because they are world champions."

But, in the end, the Portuguese superstar did mention that longevity is the key to greatness which Messi and he had achieved.

He concluded, "But I will wait and see if all these players are still at the top in 10 years, like Messi and I have done, and like we continue to do. Still there, on the podium, since more than 10 years.”

The Ballon d'Or ceremony will take place on December 3, 2018 in Paris.

'Lionel Messi is my Idol and Cristiano Ronaldo is a Monster,' Says Neymar

Paris-Saint Germain star, Neymar, has revealed he learned every day from Lionel Messi during their time together at Barcelona while describing Cristiano Ronaldo as a "monster".

The Brazilian spent four seasons playing at the Camp Nou alongside Messi, winning two La Liga titles and a Champions League.

"Facing Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – and I played with Messi, who is, for me, one of the greatest footballers of all time, and he is my idol in football," said Neymar, as quoted by Mirror

"With Messi, I learned every day, whether during our practice, or playing with him, or just watching him play. And that made me stronger and it increased my capacity on the field because I kept learning a lot from him."

The PSG forward also had some kind words for the Portuguese superstar.

"As for Cristiano Ronaldo, he is a monster. Facing him is a pleasure and an honour, but we have to be more prepared. He is one of the greatest in football so you get smarter, you get alert, but at the same time you learn a lot, too."

"So, they are two of the big guys that I can relate to, because I want to learn, I want more, I want to win, I want more trophies, score more goals … so I keep learning from them every day," he concluded.

Chelsea's Ianni fined after Mourinho clash

Chelsea assistant coach Marco Ianni was fined £6,000 by the Football Association on Tuesday after his wild celebrations in front of Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

Ianni, who serves as one of Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri's assistants, sparked a touchline row after celebrating Ross Barkley's late equaliser in Chelsea's 2-2 draw against United at Stamford Bridge on October 20.

"Chelsea coach Marco Ianni has been fined £6,000 after he admitted an FA improper conduct charge. It concerned his behaviour in the 96th minute of the game against Manchester United on October 20, 2018," an FA statement read.

The FA also reminded Mourinho, Chelsea and United of their responsibilities in the aftermath of the explosive incident.

Mourinho was incensed by the way Ianni celebrated Barkley's goal in front of the United bench, leading the former Chelsea boss to dart off his seat as he chased the Italian towards the tunnel.

The United manager received an apology from both Ianni and Sarri and said he considered the matter closed.

But the FA opened disciplinary proceedings and Ianni has now been fined.

Sarri said Chelsea would consider whether any internal punishment was necessary once the FA delivered its verdict.

"I was there when Marco spoke to Mr Mourinho. He said sorry immediately, and it was really very important I think that he realised he was wrong," Sarri said last week.

Mourinho had launched an unexpected defence of Ianni after former Manchester United star Phil Neville called for the assistant's sacking.

"I'm not happy that it's going too far with the young boy. I don't think he deserves more than what he got," Mourinho said.

"He apologised to me, I accept his apologies. I think he deserves a second chance. I don't think he deserves to be sacked."

Osun election: Afenifere suspends Iyiola Omisore for supporting APC

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, on Tuesday, announced the suspension of the candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the last governorship election in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, for one year.

Omisore was alleged to have aligned with the All Progressives Congress to win the rerun election in Ife South and North Local Government Areas of Osun State. His action was said to have gone against the position of his party, the Social Democratic Party and the Afenifere.

Omisore’s suspension was part of the decisions taken at the monthly meeting of the Afenifere, held at the residence of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting and read by a chieftain of the group, Chief Korede Duyile, the group said Omisore allegedly went against the position of Afenifere during the last governorship election in Osun State.

The group had earlier decided not to support the All Progressives Congress at the Osun governorship and the forthcoming general elections .

Afenifere said in the communique, “The meeting took a decision to suspend Senator Iyiola Omisore for one year for violating Afenifere’s directive which affected the outcome of Osun election.”

Muhammadu Buhari: It will require more than one election cycle to deliver change

President Muhammadu Buhari says it will require more than one election cycle to build Nigeria and deliver the promised change.

Buhari said this on Monday while delivering a lecture at the Island Club, Lagos.

The lecture was delivered on behalf of the president by Babatunde Fashola, minister of power, works and housing.

Buhari said the change promised by his government is not “an event but a process” and would require time to deliver.

While urging Nigerians to re-elect him, the president gave the assurance that the “fruits of the efforts” he has made in fixing the country in the last three and a half years would soon begin to manifest

“It took more than one term and one election cycle of the chairman of Island Club to build this hall just as it will require more than one election cycle to build the nation and deliver change,” he said.

“The process of change and reform did not happen because Island Club did anything; it happened because people, members of the club, and I believe, non-members, who were men of goodwill, chose to act.”

Buhari said he has put the country on the path of food security by banning the importation of rice despite opposition “who frustrated earlier government food security policies such as Operation Feed the Nation and the Green Revolution”.

He said his reforms in the power sector have led to improved power supply which has rubbed off on small-scale businesses.

“It is because of these small business owners, hard-working Nigerians that I am offering myself to serve for one more time,” Buhari said.

Just being born in America no longer qualifies you for citizenship – Trump

Donald Trump has announced he is going to terminate the right to citizenship for babies born on US soil to non-citizens.

The US president, who is taking an increasingly hard-line stance on immigration, said the “process” to end birthright citizenship by executive order is underway, and denied such a fundamental change would need the input of Congress, reports UK’s Independent.

“It was always told to me you need a constitutional amendment,” Mr Trump told Axios. “Guess what, you don’t.”

“You can definitely do it with an act of Congress, but now they’re saying I can do it just with an executive order,” the president continued.

“Now how ridiculous, we’re the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits. It’s ridiculous, it’s ridiculous and it has to end.”

Real Madrid Officially Announce Julen Lopetegui Exit as Santiago Solari Made Interim Boss

Real Madrid have confirmed the exit of manager Julen Lopetegui, a mere four months removed from his appointment.

The 52-year-old was hired by Los Blancos following Zinedine Zidane's departure in the summer, an appointment which caused Lopetegui to be released from his post as Spain manager on the eve of the 2018 World Cup.

His short tenure with Los Blancos is now over after a dreadful start to the season, which culminated in a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Barcelona on Sunday.

"The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF, meeting today October 29, 2018, has agreed to terminate the contract that linked coach Julen Lopetegui with the club," Real announced via their official website on Monday.

"This decision, adopted from the highest level of responsibility, aims to change the dynamics of the first team, when all the objectives of this season are still achievable.

"The Board of Directors understands that there is a great disproportion between the quality of the staff of Real Madrid, which has 8 players nominated for the next Golden Ball, something unprecedented in the history of the club, and the results obtained to date.

"The club thanks Julen Lopetegui and all his technical team for their effort and work and wishes them the best in their professional career. It will be provisionally replaced by Santiago Solari, who will lead the first team starting tomorrow, Tuesday."

Lopetegui's time at the helm saw the club start the 2018/19 La Liga campaign with four wins, two draws and four losses, with the club sat in ninth place in the table after the reverse at the hands of rivals Barcelona.

Castilla boss Santiago Solari has been promoted and will fill the post for the time being, with talks with former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte having stalled or, by some reports, broken off altogether.

Killer herdsmen are agents of government - Bishop David Oyedepo

The Bishop of Living Faith Church (aka Winners Chapel), Bishop David Oyedepo, yesterday said the inability of the government to arrest killer herdsmen in some part of the Middle Belt zone was because the killers were agents of the government.

Speaking in Ota, Ogun State, at the Church’s Sunday Service titled ‘Covenant Day of Settlement and Thanksgiving’, the clergyman stated that it was absurd for the government to fail in arresting some self-confessed killer herders in Jos, Plateau State.

Oyedepo said: “Help me ask them how many mosques have been destroyed by these people? You can also ask them how many of those who have destroyed the church has ever been caught? How many of the destroyed churches has government ever added a dime to rebuild?

“I have said it, let us remove the mask from the masquerade and nobody will fear it anymore. Government is part of this thing; you don’t need to go to school to know that.

“If people claimed responsibilities to the killings in Jos and were not arrested, the question is who is to arrest them? Is it the citizens or government? It’s the government, but they cannot arrest them because they are their agents.”

While stating that every leader is a caretaker and God remains the creator and owner of every nation, including Nigeria, he added that Nigeria would have peace when they understand that God is in control of everything, including the land.

“When a caretaker starts behaving like a landlord he will be removed. God is the permanent landlord of the earth.

“Too many arrogant foes who pose to own this nation, be warned because the day of God’s judgement is here.

“Those who sponsor and perpetrate killings and also offer covering for killers to keep killing, God will lead them to rest. God will give us peace in this country by all means.

“God enthrones kings and removes kings,” he said.

Yoruba youths warn Tinubu against supporting Buhari

A group of Yoruba youths known as the Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association has warned Asiwaju Bola Tinubu against supporting President Muhammadu Buhari reelection in 2019.

The President of the YYSA, Mr Olalekan Hammed, made the position of the group known in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday.

He said it had become obvious that the All Progressives Congress and Buhari did not value the contributions of Tinubu towards the party and the emergence of Buhari as the President in 2015.

Hammed said the position of former President Olusegun Obasanjo that Tinubu did not hold any post within the APC was justifiable, saying Buhari had written the Independent National Electoral Commission to state that he was the national leader of the APC.

The statement said, “The fact that President Muhammadu Buhari deliberately wrote INEC to affirm his position as the APC national leader vindicates the former President Obasanjo who had sometime challenged the former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to state his roles in the APC as the national leader of the party.

“Constitutionally, APC has no reasonable provision for him (Tinubu) in the party and he has been used and dumped.

“It would have been better and respectable, provided Mr Buhari did not write to INEC or talk about the issue. The letter he wrote to the electoral umpire to attest that he is the party’s national leader was aimed at ridiculing Tinubu.

“Yoruba people understand body language more than any other tribe in Nigeria. There is no sense in staying with people who do not appreciate your presence or feel your impact. The YYSA implores Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to think twice before supporting Buhari’s re-election bid. There is no difference between someone who steals your property and someone who shows no gratitude for all the favour rendered to him.”

Anthony Joshua: My son lacks ‘killer instincts’

Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua says it is unlikely his son JJ will become a boxer because he will lack the “killer instinct” his father got from a tough upbringing.

Joshua, 29, was brought up on the Meriden Estate in Garston, Hertfordshire and was an angry teenager who had brushes with police including a warning after he threw an opponent by their neck onto the floor at secondary school.

Looking in a more relaxed pose he and his son pose for photos in the new December issue of GQ magazine and Anthony says: “We all have that killer instinct, but we dampen it down in life. That’s what we train for – that killer instinct. It’s what I do for a living.

“I had that instinct before I ever boxed, but now I know how to handle it, control it and when to use it.

“And that’s why I think maybe JJ won’t be able to box, because when you come from a less violent background, do you have that instinct? JJ has the bloodline but will he be the strongest in the pack?

“That’s what people will wonder and I would wonder that too and probably wouldn’t want him to do it.”

Asked what it takes to be a boxer, Joshua adds: “As soon as I walked into the that gym for the first time I knew I wanted to give myself to boxing.

“Boxing is the sport that rewards hard work, the sport that if you apply yourself, dedicate yourself, train hard, you can become one of the best in the world.

“I stopped smoking, I stopped late nights, I cut out everything that didn’t help boxing.

We must market Muhammadu Buhari from door-to-door - Yahaya Bello

Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, says for President Muhammadu Buhari to be reelected in 2019, the All Progressives Congress (APC) must be ready to market his accomplishments.

Bello said this at a dinner hosted by the president for youth political appointees and supporters of his administration at the presidential villa, Abuja.

He said failure to present the achievements of the current administration effectively may make it difficult to mobilise the votes needed for Buhari’s reelection.

Read: I’ll campaign for Muhammadu Buhari, Jide Sanwo-Olu - Ambode

“If those of us in APC do not sell this winning product very well — economic recovery will be mistaken for slow-down due to poor management of the nation’s economy,” he said.

“Measures to protect local industries and stimulate domestic production will be mistaken for deliberate impoverishment of the populace.

“Trial of politically exposed offenders using long existent laws which previous leaders were not willing to deploy against cronies and accomplices will be mistaken for extrajudicial measures and disdain for the rule of law.

“If we fail to take charge of the narrative and persuade people till they see the true intents of this administration’s policies, we will have a much harder job mobilising the votes we need to get Mr President re-elected.

“If we do not put Mr President’s achievements before our people till they can recite it themselves, they may agree with the shameless PDP that the heartless corruption which it is offering again is somehow better than the alleged incompetence of the APC which has accomplished every good thing I listed above.

“In summary, all may be lost if we do not get the Nigerian people to see why they must allow Mr President continue his great work as they go to the polls in 2019.”

The governor noted that the party has a huge task before it in 2019, saying the major opposition party will not be a pushover.

He said: “As members of the APC, we will not deny that our party has a huge task before us in the 2019 general elections.

“The elections will not be a walkover, the PDP will not be a pushover and we must take nothing and no one for granted.

“The APC is promising to continue re-writing the age-long negatives which have plagued our nation to positives.

“This is the message we must all take to every nook and cranny of this nation, and from door to door.”

Buhari says he is disappointed in Nigerian press

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he is disappointed in the Nigerian press.

He said his grouse was that the media did not give his administration the credit for the agricultural revolution he said was ongoing in the country.

Buhari spoke while hosting some young political appointees to a dinner at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday night.

“I’m very disappointed in the Nigerian press. They didn’t give this government the credit of the “Go back to the land” programme. We have cut down the importation of rice by at least 90 per cent,” the President said.

He noted that many Nigerians were abandoning white collar jobs daily and embracing farming because of his government’s reform programme in the sector.

Under his watch, Buhari also said Nigeria had achieved food security.

He justified his appointment of Chief Audu Ogbeh as the Minister of Agriculture, saying the appointment was based on his antecedents.

He said the nation could not have a better person than Ogbeh whom he said had invested so much in agriculture and had also suffered.

“Ogbeh went to a bank, borrowed money and invested in agriculture. He suffered but eventually, he paid the money.

“So, you cannot have a better person than somebody who has suffered in the sector,” he said.

Buhari again blamed the Peoples Democratic Party for allegedly wasting the commonwealth of Nigerians during the 16 years the party was in power at the federal level.

He reiterated his position that there was nothing to show for the huge resources that accrued to the country during the period.

Like he did a few weeks back, Buhari queried the $16bn said to have been expended on the power sector during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Although he did not mention Obasanjo’s name, it was during his administration that the sum was said to have been spent on the power sector.

“There was no power and they said they spent $16bn on power. Where is it (power)?” the President asked.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, claimed that the PDP didn’t achieve one-tenth of the APC achievements in its 16 years in power.

While saying that the present administration had achieved so much, Mustapha promised to make available a document which he said captured what the government had been able to achieve in less than four years.

FG Set To Register Poor Nigerians | Ministry of Budget and National Planning

The Ministry of Budget and National Planning, says the National Social Registry (NSR) is part of Federal Government’s effort to capture the Nigerian poor and vulnerable in the country.

Mr Olajide Odewale, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary said this during an engagement meeting with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and Donor partners on NSR in Abuja.

Odewale, represented by Mr Kayode Obasa, the Director, Social Development of the ministry said the register would help improve services in the country.

“A lot of misinformation and invalidated data are out there in the public domain.

“And attempt to use the data to implement the interventions have led sometimes to undesirable outcomes, hence the need to take the right steps.

“First, by warehousing details of the poor and vulnerable Nigerians irrespective of the location and socio-economic standings.

“I therefore, thank President Muhammadu Buhari for his visionary position and determination to ensure that every Nigerian is counted and given basic social service.’’

Odewale expressed optimism that the forum would address grey areas of the current NSR and shed more light on how MDAs could leverage on the register.

He said it would also provide the developers of the NSR feedback from seasoned technocrats on measures to better implement the register.

Odewale expressed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that the NSR was sustained and utilised by all stakeholders.

He then commended the representatives of the various MDAs and donor partners for their efforts and contribution to the success of the NSR.

The World Bank Representative, Prof Foluso Okunmodewa, in his remarks expressed optimism that the NSR would resolve the errors of exclusions in the country.

“What is important for us at the bank is to make sure that we protect the quality and credibility of this register.

“I enjoin all the partners to ensure the register in terms of credibility is protected,’’ he said.

Mrs Hajara Sami, the Acting National Coordinator, Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO), said the forum was timely and pledged commitment to support the NSR drive.

Mr Hamidou Poufon, the Chief of Social Policy, United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), also pledged the fund’s commitment to support the register.

Europa League: Three Things to Look out for as Sporting Portugal Face Arsenal

Arsenal travel to Portugal to face Sporting Portugal in the group stage of the Europa League. The Gunners have won ten games on the trot, and are high confidence after they won their game against Leicester City on the weekend.

Sporting CP would not be easy opponents however, and Arsenal need to be on top of their game to continue their winning run.

Here are three things to look out for in the Sporting Portugal vs Arsenal game.

3. Light in defence

With both Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac out injured, It will be interesting to see who manager Unai Emery plays at left-back. He tried Stephan Lichtsteiner in that position twice already, and while the player looked uncomfortable there, he was not too shabby.

However, against Leicester, he was presumably tired as he was taken off at the hour mark, and Granit Xhaka was played there instead. Whether Emery will stick with Lichtsteiner or look for other options remains to be seen.

2. Battle for top spot

Sporting CP will not be easy opposition for Arsenal to just walk over. They also have won both games in the group and are level on points with the Gunners. Whoever comes out on top in the double-header will certainly be the winner of the group.

1. Winning run

Arsenal have now won 10 games on the bounce and will be looking to make it number 11. The wins have come in all competitions, including two in the Europa League and one in the League Cup. Although Sporting CP are no pushovers, Emery would expect them to make it 11, considering they have more firepower in attack.

The convict had admitted committing the offence and begged the court to temper justice with mercy as she did not know what came over her.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Ijeoma Ukagha, had told the court that a team of police officers from the Utako Police Station in the FCT arrested and took the convict to the station for allegedly constituting a nuisance on Oct. 18.

She said that while at the station, the convict insulted the Divisional Crime Officer.

Ukagha said the offence contravened Section 155 of the Penal Code.

Cristiano Ronaldo Rape Case : Ex-Girlfriend Comes to his Defence, Claims he is a 'Perfect Gentleman'

Cristiano Ronaldo Rape Case : Ex-Girlfriend Comes to his Defence, Claims he is a 'Perfect Gentleman'

Footballing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has found himself in controversy over the past month or so after a former model accused him of rape in a Las Vegas hotel suite back in 2009. While the 33-year-old has denied the claims, he has now found support in the form of his ex-girlfriend

Nereida Gallardo with whom Ronaldo had a eight-month relationship in the past, has come to his defense, claiming that the footballer "was always a gentleman" during his time with her. The 35-year-old also went on to say that she would be willing to defend him in court if called to do so.

“He was a courteous guy — warm and loving. He was always a gentleman with me. Cristiano treated me well while I was with him. He was never ever aggressive towards me — not even near. I can’t see him forcing or holding down someone. He is not an aggressive guy in bed," Gallardo said as quoted by nzherald.

“I’ve had partners who have been verbally aggressive or who liked to grab me hard and he isn’t like that. So far I haven’t been contacted. But if I am, I would be willing to go and give evidence in his favour," she added.

Ronaldo while maintaining his innocence, has continued to focus on football, recently helping Juventus beat his former club Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League.

Federal government working on new population policy - Minister

In realisation of the dangers posed by unbridled population growth, the Federal Government is currently working on a new policy on the population to determine how many children a woman will be allowed to bear.

She also expressed regret at the controversy generated over the imposition of fine on MTN Communications on repatriation of profits.

Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed made this disclosure during a plenary discussion on “Sustainable Economic Opportunities: Ending the Vicious Cycle on Tuesday during the 2018 Nigerian Economic Summit.

She said the government was presently consulting with both religious and traditional leaders across the country on the issue after which a policy will be formulated on the matter.

Zainab who admitted that government was not doing enough in the areas of job creation and social investment programmes.

She also admitted that government officials needed the input of private sector operatives on how to develop the economy.

“We must find out ways to engage our youths to be active, ensure that transportation is effective, available and reasonably priced.”

The Minister said there was a need to support the informal sector of the economy so as to absorb the current 40 per cent unemployment figure.

She gave the assurance that government would not stop because of the coming elections as “Mr President has mandated some of us to concentrate on the economy and shun election matters.”

On MTN, which had become an albatross on foreign investments, Zainab described the incident as “very damaging for us.”

She, however, blamed the telecommunications company for the episode because of its refusal to provide the required information to settle the dispute.

She said for a long time, MTN failed to cooperate with CBN auditors who were mandated to resolve the matter.

Assuring investors, Zainab said there has not been any occasion in recent times when investors had difficulty in repatriating their capital.

Another member of the panel, Dr Doyin Salami of the Lagos Business School declared that Nigeria must reverse the massive movement into poverty.

He noted that of the 1.5 million candidates that yearly seek admission into universities, only 350,000 are admitted while less than half of them eventually get employment after graduation.

He identified lack of capacity as a major problem of the government saying “it is erroneous to assume that government always knows there is a problem.

“And when they know there is a problem, they may not have the wherewithal to solve it. We must deal with the problem of capacity in government.”

Salami identified abysmally low wages as a major contributor to low-level corruption in the country decrying that there was an upward concentration of income declaring “ we need to go back and review our reward and remuneration system.”

Also contributing, Director, School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, United States of America, Prof. Peter Lewis observed that the presence of corruption in the system was not an excuse for poverty and underdevelopment.

He, however, insisted that the reward system must be attractive.

“There must be po!icy consistency to give assurance to investors.”

He said there were enough talents and good policies in Nigeria but identified inconsistencies, lack of collective action, coordination and government inability to galvanise citizens as major reasons for lack of development in Nigeria.

In his view, the executive arm of government must show a sense of urgency and that it is important to have a stable and capable economic management team in place.

I’ll campaign for Muhammadu Buhari, Jide Sanwo-Olu - Ambode

Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of Lagos state, has promised to lead a strong campaign for the victory for President Muhammadu Buhari and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governorship candidate of the the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Addressing reporters at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport shortly after he accompanied Buhari to perform the official commissioning of the new Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Seme-Krake joint border post in Badagry, Ambode said it is important for the APC to retain its leadership positions both at the federal and state levels.

“I have just accompanied Mr President to the Nigerian-Benin Border Post. So what we have commissioned today is a joint Border Patrol post between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin and it is called Semo-Krake Border Post,” he said.

“But again, just to also use this opportunity to let Lagosians know that we are heavily committed to the re-election of Mr. President and you can see that his continuous visit to Lagos reiterates the fact that he is actually a lover of Lagos state and I am committed to ensuring his re-election.

“We are going to campaign heavily for him. I am also committed to ensuring that the APC wins the governorship election come 2019. We support the candidacy of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and we would make sure that APC retains Lagos State and the centre.”

Sanwo-Olu defeated Ambode at the primary election which held earlier in the month.

Earlier, Ambode had received Buhari at the airport before the duo proceeded to Seme where the president joined his Republic of Benin counterpart, Patrice Talon, to inaugurate the border post.

Seme-Krake joint border is one of the busiest boundary lines not only in West Africa but on the whole continent.

On a daily basis, it records huge movement of persons, goods and services.

The border post is expected to enhance the free movement of persons and goods in the region and foster integration between Nigerians and citizens of Benin.

Over 200,000 Supporters Abandon Atiku Abubakar, Defect To APC

Over 200,000 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members and supporters of former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defecting Atiku’s loyalists who are members of the ‘Atiku Care Foundation’ in the North-West Zone on Sunday dumped the Foundation and collapsed into Arewa Media Group Organisation for Buhari 2019 Campaign.

At a brief ceremony, chairman of the amalgamated group under the auspices of Atiku Care Foundation, Comrade Sanusi Ababai, said over seven affiliates of the Atiku Care Foundation supporters, decided to dump Atiku for the reelection of President Buhari because of unfulfilled promises.

He said: “For several years now, we have been working hard for the development of Atiku Care Foundation. A lot of promises were made when we started.

“They told us that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar needed a platform to reach out to the masses at the grassroot. We were committed because there were programmes from healthcare delivery, education, entrepreneurship, youth and women empowerment.”

Ababai, former Director of Administration and Strategy in-charge of North-West for Atiku Care Foundation, said the group has decided to pitch its tent with President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid for his foresight and commitment to redeem Nigeria from the shackles of corruption and poverty.

Police arrest prophet for faking church members’ kidnap in Ondo

A 48-year-old prophet, Godwin Ayenuberun, has been arrested by Ondo State Police Command for faking the kidnap of two of his church members, receiving N150, 000 as charges for spiritual protection.

The State Commissioner for Police, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, disclosed this in Akure when parading the suspect and his acolyte, Ibukun Adetigha, alongside other suspects for various offences.

Adeyanju recounted that the victim, Segun Omosaye from Okitipupa, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state, was previously kidnapped by unknown gunmen on November 30, 2017 but regained his freedom a month after.

He said Omosaye received a text message on September 26, 2018 from his abductors, who admitted the previous abduction, informing him that they would come back to kidnap him again and kill him.

According to him, the Prophet, who is also the Founder of Gethsemane Cherubim Church in Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje LGA, had claimed he saw a vision that the victim would be abducted before the incident.

“On receipt of his complaint, detectives swung into action and through intelligence gathering, arrested one Ibukun Adetigha and Prophet Godwin Ayenugha, a founder of a church in Igbokoda.

“The Techno handset that was used in sending text messages was recovered from them. Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to have sent the text messages but denied their involvement in the abduction of the victim,” he said.

Ayenuberun confessed to committing the crime, revealing that “I am the spiritual father of the victim; I am the one attending to all their spiritual problems. We are all friends, I am the one providing spiritual help for them.

“I did it in a bid to get money from them. This is why I asked my boy to send message to them. I am not a kidnapper, I have never involved in kidnapping business before.”

Federal government to float N100 billion Sukuk in December

Director General of the Debt Management Office (DMO), Patience Oniha, says another N100 billion Sukuk will be floated in December 2018. This is coming after the Federal Government had earlier issued an N100 billion in September 2017 for the construction of 25 economically important roads.

Sukuk or Islamic Bond is a financial instrument structured to generate returns to ethical investors without infringing on the Islamic law, which forbids interest payments.

“June was when the budget was approved and Sukuk is a project that was also approved in the budget,” she said.

“We will float it; we have made significant progress; we will issue it this year.”

The DG said the second tranche would be specifically for infrastructure development just like the first one issued in September 2017.

Oniha said that the DMO was working with the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing on the projects earmarked for the second tranche of the N100 billion Sukuk bond. She also expressed optimism that the second tranche would be oversubscribed, based on the feelers from investors and the public.

“We still have auctions regularly, we issue FGN Bonds and they have been oversubscribed. So, whether liquidity is tight or not, we have got good demands,” she explained.

“Don’t forget we are selling good products when we do Treasury Bills and FGN Bonds.

“But in terms of Sukuk, I think from the feelers we have got from investors and the public, it is a product the people want to associate with.”

She noted that people would be more enthusiastic about the Sukuk because it’s for infrastructure.

Some of the roads funded by the first tranche include the Ibadan-Ilorin Road, Kolo-Otuoke-Bayelsa-Palm Road, Enugu-Port/Harcourt Road, Kaduna Eastern By-Pass, Kano-Maiduguri Road and Loko-Oweto Bridge over River Benue, among others.

Chelsea Coach Marco Ianni Charged With Improper Conduct by FA Over Jose Mourinho Provocation

Chelsea assistant coach Marco Ianni has been charged with improper conduct in a touchline flare-up with Jose Mourinho that led the Football Association to remind the Manchester United manager of his responsibilities.

Tensions escalated in front of the Stamford Bridge tunnel after Ross Barkley's equaliser deep into stoppage time saw Chelsea secure a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Former Chelsea manager Mourinho was angered by the way Ianni, an assistant to current Blues boss Maurizio Sarri, celebrated in front of the United bench.

Portuguese coach Mourinho leapt from his seat and had to be restrained by security staff as a melee ensued.

Both Ianni and Sarri have since apologised to Mourinho, with the United manager saying he now considers the matter closed.

But the FA, English football's governing body, has decided to take action.

"Chelsea coach Marco Ianni has been charged following the game against Manchester United on Saturday," said an FA statement.

"It is alleged that his behaviour in the 96th minute constituted improper conduct.

"In relation to this incident, Jose Mourinho has been formally reminded of his responsibilities whilst both clubs have received similar official reminders in terms of the behaviour expected of their staff and players at all times whilst in the technical area."

Mourinho, speaking ahead of United's Champions League match against Juventus on Tuesday, played down the fracas by saying he did not want it to damage Italian coach Ianni's career.

"I want to thank Sarri for his honesty," Mourinho told reporters. "I want to thank Chelsea for its honesty too.

"But I'm not happy that it's going too far with the young boy (Ianni).

"He apologised to me, I accept his apologies. I think he deserves a second chance.

"I don't think he deserves to be sacked, I don't think he deserves anything more than the fact that his club was strong with him.

"Everybody makes mistakes, I made a lot of mistakes, so I hope they let the kid go on."

Mourinho does not face further FA action relating to the incident but is preparing to answer a separate charge of using abusive, insulting or improper language following United's 3-2 win over Newcastle, relating to remarks he allegedly made in Portuguese.

He has until Wednesday to respond and Mourinho could face a touchline ban if the charge is upheld.

Those who feel they have another country free to go — Buhari

President  Buhari on Monday said Nigerians who felt that they have another country outside Nigeria may choose to go.

He said he and others who do not have another country would rather stay back and salvage it together.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving All Progressives Congress governorship aspirants and members of the party from the three senatorial zones of Kwara State at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He enjoined Nigerians to remain faithful and loyal to the country in all their dealings.

Buhari said, “You don’t have to be in uniform to be loyal.

“What I said long ago in 1984 is still valid today. We have no other country but Nigeria.

“Others who feel they have another country may choose to go. We will stay here and salvage it together.”

Chelsea Manager Maurizio Sarri Says the Club Fans Should Respect Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has asked club fans to show respect for Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, considering the Portuguese was at the helm when the Blues had the most successful period in their history.

Fans of the home team booed Mourinho during the second half of the match, when United were leading with a 2-1 margin. However, Chelsea equalised in the final minute of injury time and Sarri has asked the fans to show respect to the manager.

Sarri said: "Mourinho here has won and so I think that we need to respect him and to respect everybody who has won a trophy for the club."

On the touchline incident with Mourinho and Ianni, Sarri added: "I didn't see anything on the pitch.

"But after the match, I've spoken with Jose and Jose explained what's happened so immediately I understand that we were on the wrong way of this situation and so I've spoken with Jose, spoken with the young member of the staff [Ianni] and we have dealt immediately with the situation.

"I've brought the member of staff to Jose to say sorry. I think it's finished but I want to be sure. We were wrong, we made a mistake."

Sarri has insisted that Mourinho was a better manager than he was, considering the latter has won so many trophies at the top level whereas he has not yet gotten there. It remains to be seen if the Italian can taste success and win his first silverware at a top club.

Minimum wage: Labour threatens nationwide strike November 6

The labour unions in Nigeria say they would commence a nationwide, indefinite strike from November 6 if government does not meet their demands.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, and that of the United Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, stated this in a press statement on Sunday.

The labour unions are angry at government’s stance on new minimum wage for workers. The federal government insists it will could only increase the minimum wage from the current N18,000 to N24,000, claiming no amount was agreed with the labour leaders at a meeting of a tripartite committee also involving the private sector.

The labour unions, who initially demanded N50,000 mimimum wage, however, say they agreed to N30,000 during the negotiation.

It is not true that we proposed N30,000 as the new national minimum wage, the labour leaders said.

“It is also not true that the committee did not agree on a figure during its last sitting. We accepted N30,000 as a compromise to demonstrate the willingness of Nigerian workers to make sacrifices towards nation building,” the officials said.

Wabba and Ajaero said it has become necessary for the Organised Private Sector (OPS) as represented in the tripartite committee to speak up on this matter.

“Keeping silent in the face of this apparent mischief does our nation no good. At this time the OPS does not have any other choice but to rise to the occasion by telling Nigerians what transpired in the meeting.

“What we are waiting for is for the federal government to immediately set in motion the necessary machinery for turning the agreement into a Bill for onward submission to the NASS where we expect the presidency to work together with the legislators to make it a law so that it can be implemented quickly.”

They said labour unions in Nigeria have not seen any sign of seriousness on the government’s part to resolve workers’ concerns.

“A day of national outrage and mourning which will be used to sensitise Nigerians on our plight and on the issues at stake. This shall take place in all states of the federation including Abuja on Tuesday, the 30th day of October, 2018,” they said.

They said the Joint Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of all the labour centres in Nigeria will hold to receive reports and make final preparations for our ultimate engagement with the federal government on the matter on November 2.

Recall that the unions had embarked on a nationwide strike on September 26 to compel the tripartite committee to complete its assignment on the new minimum wage.

The strike was suspended after the committee reconvened. But it is the deliberations of the committee that are now in dispute.

Thierry Henry beaten on Monaco coaching debut

Thierry Henry suffered defeat in his first match as a head coach when his 10-man Monaco side slumped to a 2-1 loss at Strasbourg on Saturday to drop into the Ligue 1 relegation zone, while Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 10th straight victory to start their title defence.

The principality club have failed to win in 11 games in all competitions since the opening weekend of the French top-flight season, and are only above bottom team Guingamp on goal difference.

Monaco, who were runners-up to PSG last season, are now 24 points adrift of the reigning champions after they cruised to a 5-0 thrashing of Amiens at the Parc des Princes despite resting several key players.

A dreadful error by Monaco's third-choice goalkeeper Seydou Sy gifted Strasbourg midfielder Adrien Thomasson an early opener, and substitute Samuel Grandsir was sent off midway through the second half.

Lebo Mothiba doubled the advantage, and a late Youri Tielemans penalty was a mere consolation for the 2017 Ligue 1 title-winners.

Henry - a World Cup winner and Arsenal's all-time record goalscorer who started his playing career at Monaco - made four changes to the team which lost to Rennes before the international break, with former Manchester City and Inter Milan striker Stevan Jovetic restored up front.

But his new side got off to the worst possible start as they handed Strasbourg a 17th-minute lead.

Kenny Lala's long ball forward was nodded hopefully towards goal by Thomasson, but Senegalese 'keeper Sy - who was only playing due to injures to Diego Benaglio and Danijel Subasic - comically fumbled the ball over his own line.

A disappointing first half ended poorly for Henry and Monaco, as captain and star striker Radamel Falcao was forced off injured.

Monaco started the second half quickly and almost equalised when centre-back Kamil Glik's volley was hacked off the line by home defender Lala.

But it was proving a miserable debut for Henry, as just two minutes after being brought on as a substitute, Grandsir was given a straight red card for catching Anthony Goncalves in the hip with a high boot, with the Strasbourg winger collapsing to the ground holding his face.

As the visitors pushed for an equaliser, they were hit on the counter-attack in the 84th minute as South African international Mothiba raced clear before a cute lob gave him his seventh goal of the season for club and country.

Tielemans pulled one back with an injury-time spot-kick after Moussa Sylla was brought down in the area, but it proved too little, too late.

Paris Saint-Germain continued the blistering start to their Ligue 1 title defence as Kylian Mbappe scored again earlier on Saturday.

Coach Thomas Tuchel left key men Neymar, Thiago Silva and Thomas Meunier out of the squad altogether at the Parc des Princes with Wednesday's Champions League clash with Napoli in mind, but PSG had more than enough to see off Amiens.

"Everyone thinks that Ligue 1 might be too easy to prepare for the Champions League, but it's not like that," insisted Tuchel, who took over the reins from Unai Emery in the close-season.

"That would mean you're blaming the other teams, but we focus on ourselves. Nobody won 10 games in a row, and we did it."

Brazilian centre-back Marquinhos nodded the hosts into a 12th-minute lead and Adrien Rabiot made it two shortly before half-time.

Germany winger Julian Draxler grabbed the third headed goal of the game, and the 19-year-old Mbappe fired in late on to score his ninth goal in just six league outings this season.

It was a horrid mismatch with Amiens utterly outclassed, and teenager Moussa Diaby came off the bench to complete the rout as the capital-city giants maintained their commanding eight-point lead at the top of the table.

Elsewhere, second-placed Lille continued their strong start to the campaign as goals from Nicolas Pepe and Luiz Araujo sealed a 2-1 win over Dijon.

Mourinho plays down touchline melee after Chelsea draw

Jose Mourinho played down an ugly touchline melee after watching his Manchester United side concede a heartbreaking late equaliser as Chelsea preserved their unbeaten Premier League record on Saturday.

Ross Barkley scored in the sixth minute of injury time to level the match at 2-2 after Anthony Martial had scored twice in the second half to cancel out Antonio Rudiger's opener.

Mourinho took exception to the celebrations of one of Chelsea's backroom staff, Marco Ianni, who ran in front of the Portuguese on the touchline, as he seemed set for a sweet victory over his old club.

When asked about the incident, former Chelsea boss Mourinho said: "Oh come on, I can tell you that 97 minutes of the game was so good that you have to focus on that.

"I did not get respect back from Chelsea (fans) but that is not my responsibility. What I did here today I will do in Madrid, in Milan, in Porto, the reaction from the fans is not up to me.

"I am not annoyed with anything. What happened with (Maurizio) Sarri's assistant, Sarri was the first one to come to me and say he will resolve it.

"The assistant has already come to me and apologised, I told him to forget it. I have made a lot of mistakes in my career."

Mourinho, who won three Premier League titles in two spells at Chelsea, said United were the better side.

"We were the best team on the pitch. If you say before the game that one point at Stamford Bridge is a good result, it is so difficult to win here but after the game with the way the game was it is an awful result for us and a phenomenal result for them."

"I hope every referee does the same as Mike Dean and gives six minutes," he added. "I don't know where they came from. We always tried to play, there was no time-wasting."

The result put Chelsea top of the table before the later Saturday games but left United well off the pace.

Sarri said his side lost out to United in the physical battle as the game wore on.

"I am disappointed with the last 30 minutes," he told the BBC. "We could win but at the end one point is enough.

"We were not organised for the long ball, we usually play with short passes so we were not organised for this in the last half hour. This is not our football. I prefer to play our football for 90 minutes.

"I didn't see what happened but I have spoken to Jose Mourinho. I understood that we were in the wrong side of the situation. I have spoken to a member of my staff and have dealt with this immediately."

3 Things to Look Forward to as Chelsea Host Manchester United in the Premier League

All eyes will be on Jose Mourinho when he leads his Manchester United team out on to the pitch at Stamford Bridge in a game against Chelsea that could very well determine his fate.

Mourinho is under immense pressure to deliver wins, and anything less that three points at his old work place would again start all the speculation about his future with the Red Devils.

Here are three things to watch out for as the Blues host United in the weekend's first Premier League game.

3. Manchester United Need a Winning Run

Manchester United took some pressure off themselves when they finally got a win during their game against Newcastle United, having conceded two goals in the first half.

The comeback should ideally inspire players coming back from the international break and the squad will want to channel that winning spirit to go on a run of victories, especially considering the next set of games are not the easiest in any way.

2. Chelsea Need the Win to Stay in the Title Hunt

With Manchester City and Liverpool playing relatively easier teams, it is up to Chelsea to get all three points if they want to stay in the title hunt.

They are currently level on points with the other two and any points dropped may see them fall behind in the league standings. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will also be expected to win their respective games, so the pressure is on the Blues to deliver.

1. Mourinho's Fate Hangs in the Balance

There were reports that Jose Mourinho would lose his job during the international break if they had lost to Newcastle United. For now, the Portuguese tactician keeps his job but unless they can turn their fortunes around, he will always be the focus of attention going into every game.

Manchester United play Juventus in the Champions League next and not soon after, they face rivals Manchester City as well. So, the going could get really tough for Mourinho.

He needs to inspire his team to some good results in the next month or so to dispel any doubts about his job.

Jose Mourinho Hits Back at Man United's Lack of Attacking Football Criticism

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said that he doesn't understand all the stories about his team not playing attacking football and claimed that when the team doesn't have the ball, all that can be done is defend.

Mourinho has come under increasing criticism of late for the team's results and their playing style. This has been an ongoing saga with the manager facing the same disapproval at most teams he has managed.

And now, the Portuguese tactician has finally said that he doesn't understand all the stories printed about his teams not playing attacking football.

"That story of the attacking football - I still don’t understand that story," he said.

"Because for me you can only play attacking football when you have the ball. You need the ball. When the opposition has the ball you have to defend."

"I want my team, when the opponent has the ball, I want the ball, and you can only recover the ball if your opponent loses or if you recover or if you provoke a mistake in your opponent, for all that you need to defend," the United manager continued.

"When you have the ball you can play a different way and normally adapted to the qualities of your players. That is what I want. We try [to play that way]. The key is for the players to be able to do it," he concluded.

The Manchester United manager will return to his old club once again this weekend when they play Chelsea and will be hoping to take all three points back home.

New minimum wage: Employee can't fix figure for employer, accept what we give you - Chris Ngige

Amidst the growing rage for the upward review of the national minimum wage, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, says employees cannot dictate to their employers what they ought to earn but an agreement must be reached collectively.

A statement by the Director (Press) at the Ministry, Samuel Olowookere, said the minister said this when the new Director-General of Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, Mr. Timothy Olawale; and his predecessor, Mr. Olusegun Oshinowo, visited him.

Ngige said, “We need to arrive at a figure which the employers can afford to pay as an employee cannot fix a figure for the employer. Rather, it must be based on mutual agreement by the tripartite partners.

“It is not a function of moving motions or voting at the National Tripartite Negotiation Committee that the figure must be as the organised labour appears to make it look.

“There is absolutely therefore no need to heat up the polity. The government’s proposed new minimum wage figure is clearly based on critical facts and indices incapable of causing disequilibrium in the economy.”

The minister said it was important for the organised labour to accept a new minimum wage based on the capacity and the ability of both the government and the private sector to pay.

He appealed to NECA to appeal to the organised labour to accede to the new minimum wage. figure mutually agreeable to all the social partners.

Minimum wage: Federal government pleads with labour to accept N20,000 proposed

The Minister of labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has implored the organised labour to accept a mutually agreeable new National Minimum Wage in order to avert labour crisis.

Though, the minister did not disclose the exact figure proposed, sources told newsmen last night that the government team offered labour a new minimum wage of N20,000.

Ngige said that Nigeria could not afford rounds of labour crisis, hence, the imperative for the organised labour to accept a new National Minimum Wage figure based on the capacity and the ability of both the government and the private sector to pay in line with social dialogue and the overall interest of the nation.

In a statement issued yesterday by the Director Press in the Ministry, Samuel Olowookere, the minister made the appeal when he received the new Director General (DG) of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) Mr. Timothy Olawale and his predecessor, Mr. Olusegun Oshinowo, in his new office.

Ngige appealed to NECA to weigh its influence on the organised labour to accede to the new National Minimum Wage figure mutually agreeable to all the social partners.

“We need to arrive at a figure which the employers can afford to pay as an employee cannot fix a figure for the employer. Rather, it must be based on collective bargaining and mutual agreement by the tripartite partners. It is not a function of moving motions or voting at the National Tripartite Negotiation committee to insist that the figure must be as the organised labour appears to make it look,” he said.

The minister cautioned against heating up the polity, adding that “government’s proposed new minimum wage figure is clearly based on critical facts and indices incapable of causing disequilibrium in the economy or upturning the national social order”.

He further charged the new NECA boss to exceed the impressive record of his predecessor.

“You have enormous task ahead of you. The need for the establishment of more NECA offices across the country cannot be over emphasised so that more employers association can register with you”.

Ngige further said that the appeal was in tandem with the economic policies of the present administration.

According to the minister, the numerous private sector employers who are informal need to be brought on board the formalised private sector employers’ body.

Governors of the 36 states of the federation under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors Forum had on Wednesday declared that they were not opposed to the ongoing plans to approve a new minimum wage but that they lacked the capacity to foot the new wage bill.

The governors’ position drew a sharp reaction from the organised labour, which spoke through the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, insisting that the implementation of a new minimum wage was over due.

Ngige however urged the new D-G of NECA to ensure that numerous private sector employers who are members of NECA as well as those not yet registered but are defaulting in payment of even the existing National Minimum Wage of N18, 000 are made to comply with the law.

Jose Mourinho Promises Not to Brag If Manchester United Defeat Chelsea

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that visiting Stamford Bridge and field his team against Chelsea is now just 'another game' for him and insisted that if his team win the clash, he will not gloat or go on a rant.

Chelsea's greatest ever manager, Mourinho enjoyed two very successful spells at Stamford Bridge winning three Premier League titles between 2004 to 2015 before leaving the club in a disastrous situation.

Since then, his relationship with Chelsea fans have soured, more so when Manchester United announced Mourinho's arrival at Old Trafford.

During a 2017 FA Cup quarter-final at Stamford Bridge, Mourinho was labelled ‘Judas’ by the home crowd, to which he later replied: “Judas is still No 1.”

Independent reveal that ahead of this game, Mourinho has insisted he will show full respect to his former club and their fans. He said, "For me is another game. Would I celebrate like crazy my team’s goal at Stamford Bridge or my team’s victory at Stamford Bridge? I don’t think so."

He continued, "I think I would try to control myself and to respect the stadium and the supporters that were my supporters and stadium for many years. But apart from that is another match for me. I want to do well for my team, players, support. I am 100% Manchester United tomorrow, no more space than respect for the stadium and the fans.”

Mourinho has a poor record at Stamford Bridge since leaving Chelsea in late 2015. As United manager, he has lost on all three of his returns to west London by an aggregate score of 6-0.

Senate passes FCT University of Science and Technology Establishment Bill

The Senate on Thursday passed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) University of Science and Technology (Establishment) Bill, 2018.

The proposed university is to be owned and run by the FCT Administration with campus at Abaji in Abaji Area Council in the territory.

Its objectives, according to the bill, include provision of science and technology education and job opportunities for residents of the FCT.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had earlier approved establishment of the university at its meeting of April 15, 2017.

Sponsored by Sen. Philip Aduda (PDP-FCT), the Bill passed second reading in November, 2017.

It was thereafter referred to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative action.

Its approval on Thursday followed consideration of the committee’s report presented by its Chairman, Sen. Jibrin Barau (APC-Kano).

In his presentation, Barau said that the FCTA had the required financial wherewithal to run the institution, which focus strictly on science and technology courses.

He added that the university would also go a long way in providing science and technology education, which he said, was highly needed by the country in this digital age.

After the bill was passed, Aduda thanked his colleagues for the decision, saying efforts were being made to get the House of Representatives to do same.

He said that the FCTA had already provided 500 hectares of land and had started some infrastructure projects, including classroom blocks and laboratories at the site.

Addressing Senate correspondents after plenary, Aduda said the people of the FCT were excited over the passage of the Bill.

According to him, the already existing University of Abuja, a federal institution, does not have catchment for the people of the FCT.

This, he said, informed the quest for a state university that would take care of the “growing educational needs” of the people.

Babatunde Fashola: 945MW to be added to national grid before year end

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on Thursday said that additional 945 megawatts of electricity would be added to the national grid before the end of the year.

Fashola said this at the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce breakfast business meeting in Lagos themed: “Power Sector and the Way Forward’’.

He said that additional power would be generated to the grid from 450 mw Azura Edo plant, 215 mw Kaduna power plant, 240 mw Afam V power plant and 40mw Kashimbilla hydro plant in Taraba State.

According to him, the power sector has recorded successful improvement in incremental power capacity in generation, transmission and distribution.

“The country power generation, which stood at 4,000 megawatts when we came on board, but today, it has been increased to 7,000 megawatts.

“In 2015, energy transmission was 5,000mw while distribution was at 3,000mw but as at today, we are distributing 5,000 mw on average with 2,000 megawatts stranded.

“We are currently adding an average of 1,000 mw of energy yearly to the national grid which implies that we have added about 3,000 mw to the generation since we came on board,’’ he said.

Fashola said the statistics implied that 2,000 mw was stranded and must be evacuated for use as more power will be generated in the years to come.

He said that government had committed to invest N72 billion for the procurement and installation of equipment to help distribute unused 2,000 mw of electricity to consumers in the country.

He said the 2,000 mw was from the 7,000 mw that Gencos could generate and the 5,000 mw that Discos could distribute.

According to the minster, the Discos have complained about inadequate power to distribute.

Fashola, however, said the problem presently was that the Discos could not distribute all the power that was available.

This, he explained, was leaving the sector with an unused capacity of 2,000 mws, with an approximately 1,150 mw projected to come in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

He said that more Independent Power Projects (IPPs) would also come on stream to boost power supply in the country.

He said that government is also targeting powering some markets, Nigerian universities and hospitals through the IPP.

According to him, all these power plants do not involve the mini grids and solar systems that are coming.

Fashola said the narrative must change from not enough power to how unutilised power could be distributed.

He said that the sector had made progress on power generation and transmission, adding that distribution issues would also be cleared soon.

“The assurance guarantee brought confidence to power production business, which resulted to increased power production which took us to all-time high of 7,000mw power availability.”

“However, grid supplied power peaked at all-time high of 5,155 MW in December 2017,’’ he added.

In his remark, Dr Oba Otudeko, Chairman of the occasion, lauded Fashola over the success recorded in improving the country’s power generation and distribution, adding that there is room for improvement.

Otudeko, who is also the live patron of the Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce, said “this is the most successful and achieved bilateral chamber of commerce in Nigeria.

He said that the volume of trade between Nigeria and South Africa rose to N1.6 trillion in 2016.

‘’Trade between the two countries has increased steadily. It has increased exponentially which is commendable.

‘’Nigeria presents a huge market with a population of over 170 million people and vast resources, while South Africa presents the technical know-how in developing industries,’’ he said.
